Camping near Huntington, Vermont
Huntington sits in the Green Mountain foothills between the Champlain Valley and the Mount Mansfield ridge, putting RV travelers within roughly an hour of a cluster of Vermont State Parks. The area is best known as the trail base for Camel's Hump, and it works as a quiet home base for exploring Burlington, Waterbury, and the Stowe corridor.
Most campgrounds within reach are state-run and seasonal. Little River State Park on Waterbury Reservoir is one of central Vermont's largest and most popular campgrounds, with tent, RV, lean-to, and cabin-style sites. Underhill State Park sits on the west slope of Mount Mansfield and is walk-in only, with 13 tent sites and 13 lean-tos. Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground, at the base of Mount Mansfield off Route 108, has tent sites and lean-tos in a wooded setting with limited space for larger rigs. Mt Philo State Park, Vermont's first state park, has a very small campground of about 10 sites reached by a steep access road not recommended for trailers.
For RVs needing hookups, Shelburne Camping Area on the Lake Champlain side of the region is the closest private option.
Things to do around Huntington
Hiking anchors most trips. Underhill State Park is the launching point for four trails up Mount Mansfield, including the popular three-mile Sunset Ridge Trail. The Long Trail traverses the summit ridge, and Camel's Hump trailheads sit directly in Huntington. Mt Philo State Park offers a short walk or drive to panoramic views over the Lake Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks, and its western-facing summit is a well-known sunset spot.
Water recreation centers on Waterbury Reservoir at Little River State Park, where campers can swim, launch boats, and paddle. Remote boat-in sites line parts of the shoreline.
Off-park stops include the Ben and Jerry's factory in Waterbury, Shelburne Farms and the Shelburne Museum near Lake Champlain, and Bingham Falls just outside Smugglers' Notch.

The Vermont State Parks camping season is short. Underhill State Park and Mt Philo State Park both operate from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October. Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground and Little River State Park follow a similar late-spring to mid-October window. Outside these dates, most sites are closed, water is shut off, and roads may be gated.
July and August are peak booking months. Little River is one of the busiest state campgrounds in central Vermont, and desirable sites at Underhill, Smugglers' Notch, and Mt Philo book out well ahead for weekends and holidays.
Late September and early October bring foliage season, one of the busiest stretches of the year. Days are cool, nights are cold, and reservations for the peak color window fill quickly. Winter camping is not offered in the developed campgrounds, and the Notch Road through Smugglers' Notch closes seasonally to through traffic once snow arrives.
How to book campgrounds near Huntington
All four nearby Vermont State Parks, Mt Philo, Little River, Underhill, and Smugglers' Notch, use the same central Vermont State Parks reservation system. Camping reservations open on a rolling 11-month window, with new dates released daily at 9 a.m. Reservations made more than seven days in advance require a two-night minimum stay; one-night stays are allowed within seven days of arrival.
For summer weekends, holiday periods, and foliage season, book as early as the 11-month window allows. Waterfront and lean-to sites at Little River, and the small campground at Mt Philo, are the first to fill.
RV renters should confirm site suitability before booking. Access roads at Mt Philo and Underhill are steep, narrow, or walk-in and are not suited to most RVs and trailers. Little River accommodates RVs at many sites but has no hookups, while Shelburne Camping Area, a private operator, offers hookup options booked through its own website.
What to expect at Huntington-area campgrounds
Expect rustic, wooded state park camping. Vermont State Park campgrounds do not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites, though most have dump stations, flush toilets, potable water, and coin- or token-operated hot showers. Underhill State Park has no showers, and all of its sites are walk-in from the parking area.
Bears are active in the Mount Mansfield corridor. Food, trash, and scented items should be stored in a vehicle or bear-resistant container. Firewood brought from out of state must be packaged, labeled, and heat-treated, with USDA or state agriculture certification.
Cell service is spotty in the valleys around Huntington and inside Smugglers' Notch. Bring paper maps for trailheads, plan for cool nights even in July, and expect narrow, winding approach roads on the way in to most park entrances.

weather.gov/btv/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Huntington?
You've got this, and Huntington is actually a forgiving place to learn. First time renting an RV travelers love that your host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, and the dump tanks before you ever leave. Huntington's main roads are wide and lightly trafficked, with Route 2 running just north toward Richmond as a smooth on-ramp to I-89. Camel's Hump Road and the Huntington Gorge area have a few tighter curves, so take it slow and use turnouts. Pro tip: rent a Class C motorhome or compact travel trailer for your first trip, they drive like a big van and are far less intimidating than a Class A.
vtrans.vermont.gov/highwayWhat if something breaks down during my Huntington RV trip?
You're covered, day or night. Pro tip: if you strike out on a weekend, grab a midweek site instead, Huntington's quiet rural setting feels even better when the campground isn't full.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are the local roads like for driving an RV around Huntington?
Huntington's roads are scenic and very RV-friendly, with a few smart tips. Main Road and Route 2 (just north in Richmond) handle motorhomes and trailers easily, and I-89 gives you a smooth highway link to Burlington, Montpelier, and Stowe. Stay aware of two things: the Huntington Gorge area has narrow shoulders, and Camel's Hump Road becomes steep and twisty past the Forest City trailhead, so larger Class A rigs should turn around at the lower lot. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Pro tip: avoid mountain passes like Smugglers' Notch (Route 108) entirely in an RV, it's posted closed to RVs and trailers due to tight rock walls.
vtrans.vermont.gov/operations/traffic-researchWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Huntington?
Expect a mix that suits every camping style. Private parks near Huntington like Lone Pine Campsites and Apple Island Resort offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, and dump stations. Vermont State Parks (Little River, Underhill, Smugglers' Notch) keep things rustic, no hookups, but they include potable water fill stations, dump stations, hot showers, and lean-tos. For fuel and propane refills, head to Richmond or Williston, both about 10 miles from Huntington. Pro tip: if you want shore power for AC on a hot July night, book a private park; if you want quiet, deep-woods Vermont vibes, choose a state park and pre-charge your house batteries.

A typical motorhome rental Huntington travelers book sleeps 4 to 7 people and includes a queen bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is usually BYO via a hotspot, since rural Vermont cell signal varies. A campervan rental Huntington style (Class B) is more compact but still includes a bed, small kitchen, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: review each host's amenities list and photos closely, and ask about linens and a starter kit before pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%2C%20VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose from?
Hosts offer some genuinely useful extras to customize your trip. Popular add-ons on Huntington listings include a kitchen kit ($30 to $60), bedding and linens ($25 to $50), camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, and pet packages, all selectable during booking. For pickup, you can either meet the host at their Huntington-area location for a full walkthrough or upgrade to delivery, where they bring the RV right to your campground or driveway. Mileage policies vary (commonly 100 to 150 miles per night included), and some hosts offer unlimited mileage for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a kitchen kit on your first booking; it's the closest thing to a turnkey Vermont vacation.

The deposit is there to cover small incidentals like missing items or late returns. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off and share it with your host through the RVezy chat, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit return fast and friction-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Huntington during the winter for a ski trip?
Yes, and a winter RV trip in Vermont is unforgettable. Some Huntington hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces built for January lows that average 12°F. Bolton Valley is just 15 minutes away, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen are about 35 minutes, and Stowe Mountain Resort sits 45 minutes north, so you can park slope-adjacent and skip the lodge prices. Look for listings tagged as winter-ready and confirm shore power at your campground, since most Vermont State Parks close for the season. Pro tip: book a private RV park like Lone Pine or arrange a driveway stay through your host so you can keep the furnace humming on full hookups all weekend.
