Camping near Underhill Flats, Vermont
Underhill Flats sits in the town of Underhill on the western slope of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 4,395 feet. The village serves as a western gateway into the Green Mountains and Mount Mansfield State Forest, with Burlington roughly 20 miles to the west and Stowe about 10 miles east over Smugglers Notch.
Campground options in the immediate area lean primitive. Underhill State Park offers walk-in tent and lean-to sites developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, with no drive-up access and no facilities suited to RVs. Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground, on the opposite side of Mount Mansfield, is similar in character: mostly walk-in sites, a small number of spots that can accommodate an RV, and a narrow approach road.
RV travelers typically base at private campgrounds on the Jeffersonville side of the notch. Smugglers Notch RV Village provides full-hookup sites, Brewster River Campground caters to tents and small rigs along a river, and Maple Grove Campground rounds out the nearby private options.
Things to do near Underhill Flats
Hiking dominates the area. Underhill State Park is the western trailhead for Mount Mansfield, with the Sunset Ridge Trail climbing about 3 miles to the summit and crossing rare alpine tundra above treeline. The Long Trail traverses the ridge and links to loops on the Stowe side.
From Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground, trails lead to Sterling Pond, Bingham Falls, and Mount Mansfield. The notch itself draws rock and ice climbers, and Route 108 through the pass closes to vehicles in winter, opening it to snowshoers and backcountry skiers.
Off the trail, Jeffersonville offers kayaking and tubing on the Lamoille River, the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, covered bridges, and stops like Boyden Valley Winery. Stowe, Ben and Jerry's factory, and Lake Champlain in Burlington are all within a short drive.

The camping season here is short. Underhill State Park typically opens the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and closes the second Monday in October. Smugglers' Notch State Park runs a similar window, from the third weekend in May through the second Monday in October. Private parks like Smugglers Notch RV Village and Maple Grove Campground generally operate May through October.
Summer brings warm days, black flies in early June, and the region's busiest weekends. Reservations for July and August fill quickly, especially for lean-tos and any RV-capable site. Fall foliage from late September into mid-October is the other peak, with weekend sites often booked well in advance.
Winter closes the state park campgrounds and shuts Route 108 through Smugglers Notch. Early spring is mud season, when trails may be closed to protect them and back roads can be soft. Late May and early June offer quieter camping before the summer rush.
How to book a campsite near Underhill Flats
Vermont State Parks, including Underhill State Park and Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground, use a single reservation system at vtstateparks.com or by phone through the state's reservation call center. Reservations open on a rolling 11-month window, with new dates released daily at 9 a.m.
Reservations made more than seven days out generally require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within seven days of arrival. Same-day bookings are accepted until 2 p.m. Group camping areas have separate rules and minimums.
Private parks book directly. Smugglers Notch RV Village, Brewster River Campground, and Maple Grove Campground each handle reservations through their own websites. For summer weekends and foliage season, book several months ahead.
What to expect on-site
Sites near Underhill Flats trend rustic. Underhill State Park has no drive-up sites, no showers, and limited parking, so campers carry gear in from a shared lot. Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground has flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, potable water, and a dump station, but most sites are walk-in and only a handful accommodate a small trailer or RV.
Route 108 through Smugglers Notch is narrow and winding. Vermont law prohibits single vehicles over 40 feet and combinations over 45 feet from the notch segment, so RV travelers between Stowe and Jeffersonville must go around via Route 15 or I-89.
Expect cool nights even in summer, biting insects in early season, and a strict out-of-state firewood rule: only heat-treated, certified wood may be brought in. Cell service is spotty in the mountain valleys.
