Campgrounds and RV parks near Basye, VA

Bryce Resort anchors most local activity. Principal activities include skiing, golfing, mountain biking, tennis, fishing, and water sports at Lake Laura and the resort pool. Winter brings lift-served skiing and snow tubing, while warmer months add a downhill bike park and paddling on Lake Laura. Hikers head west into the George Washington National Forest, where the trail from Wolf Gap to Big Schloss is the signature route, with a rocky overlook straddling the Virginia and West Virginia state line. The Lee Ranger District also holds the Peters Mill Run and Taskers Gap OHV trail system, marketed by Shenandoah County tourism as about 36 miles of routes for UTVs, ATVs, and dual-sport motorcycles. East of town, Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park offers overlooks, waterfall hikes, and access to the Appalachian Trail. The North Fork of the Shenandoah River, reachable at Seven Bends State Park, provides kayak and canoe put-ins for flatwater paddling.

Late spring through mid-fall is the core RV season. Private campgrounds in the valley generally operate from spring through late fall, and national park campgrounds along Skyline Drive follow a similar window, typically opening between late March and early May and closing by late October or early November, weather permitting. May tends to be the wettest month, so expect afternoon showers and muddy trails. Summer is peak season for families, with warm valley days, cooler nights at higher elevations, and full programming at Bryce Resort. October brings fall foliage on the Blue Ridge and Great North Mountain ridgelines, and weekends around peak color fill quickly at both public and private campgrounds. Winter is quiet in the valley but active on the mountain. Ski season at Bryce Resort typically runs from late November or December through early March, with the most reliable conditions in January and February. Snowmaking covers most of the mountain and keeps the season running in lighter snow years. Most tent-oriented sites close for the season, and Skyline Drive can shut for snow and ice.

Roads into Basye from I-81 are paved and manageable for rental RVs, but the last miles to some forest campgrounds and trailheads turn to gravel and can be rough after rain. Elevation changes are moderate on the main routes; expect steeper grades if driving up toward Bryce Resort or crossing into West Virginia. Hookups vary widely. Private parks in the valley typically offer water, electric, and sewer at RV sites, plus dump stations. Campgrounds inside Shenandoah National Park do not provide RV hookups, but dump and potable water stations are available at the developed campgrounds along Skyline Drive. Cell reception is limited on Skyline Drive and in the national forest. Black bears are active in the region, so store food and trash in hard-sided compartments. Firewood must be certified heat-treated to prevent moving invasive insects.
