Campgrounds and RV parks near Belmont Estates, VA

Shenandoah National Park is the headline draw. Skyline Drive stretches 105 miles with four entrances: Front Royal, Thornton Gap, Swift Run Gap, and Rockfish Gap, with Swift Run Gap and Thornton Gap the closest to Belmont Estates. Day hikes to waterfalls and overlooks, plus black bear and deer sightings, make it an easy family outing from any campground in the valley. The valley floor offers cavern tours at Endless Caverns and Luray Caverns, tubing and fishing on the Shenandoah River, and mountain biking around Stokesville and the North River district of George Washington National Forest. Harrisonburg adds farm-to-table restaurants, breweries, and the downtown market. Civil War battlefields at New Market and Cross Keys are within a short drive, and the Route 11 corridor is dotted with orchards and wineries.

Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows for an RV trip in this part of Virginia. May and June bring warm days, blooming laurel along Skyline Drive, and reliably open campgrounds, though May sees the highest number of rain days and the heaviest monthly rainfall, near 3.5 inches in the valley. Summer runs warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Private parks near Harrisonburg and New Market stay open and busy through August, and weekend sites at popular campgrounds fill well in advance. Weekday arrivals ease the crunch. Fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park typically peaks in mid- to late October, driving very heavy demand along Skyline Drive and at valley campgrounds, so reserve early. Winter is cold with snow possible from December into March. Shenandoah campgrounds typically open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, weather permitting, and Skyline Drive may close temporarily for inclement weather, so status should always be checked before heading up.

Terrain in this stretch of the valley is rolling farmland framed by the Blue Ridge and Allegheny ranges. Cell service is generally solid near Harrisonburg and along Interstate 81 but drops quickly on side roads into the national forest and along Skyline Drive. Private parks typically offer full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and family amenities such as pools and playgrounds. National park and national forest campgrounds lean more basic, with basic amenities such as restrooms, potable water, picnic tables, and fire rings, and no hookups for RVs. Bears are active throughout Shenandoah National Park and adjacent forest lands, so store food and trash inside the RV or in provided lockers. Summer humidity, biting insects near rivers, and cool mountain nights are worth planning for, and rental RVs should be stocked with layers, bug spray, and rain gear.
