Campgrounds near Crozet
Crozet sits at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Albemarle County, roughly twenty minutes west of Charlottesville and minutes from I-64. The location puts RV travelers within short driving distance of Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the wineries and breweries of the Monticello Wine Trail and Nelson 151 corridor.
Misty Mountain Camp Resort is the closest full-service option, a family-oriented park just outside the village on U.S. 250 with full-hookup pull-through sites, cabins, a pool, and long-term spots. Waynesboro North 340 Campground and Charlottesville KOA Holiday round out the developed RV parks on either side of the mountain, while Devils Backbone Camp offers hookup sites on the grounds of a working brewery in Nelson County.
For a national-park experience, Loft Mountain Campground is the closest Shenandoah campground to Crozet, sitting near Milepost 80 on Skyline Drive. It has no hookups, but it accommodates larger rigs and provides a dump station, potable water, and direct access to the Appalachian Trail.
Things to do near Crozet
Hiking dominates the area. Trails from Loft Mountain Campground lead into the Big Run Wilderness and past waterfalls, and the Appalachian Trail runs directly through the campground. Closer to town, Sugar Hollow and Mint Springs Park offer shorter local routes, and Skyline Drive threads 105 miles along the Blue Ridge crest with 75 scenic overlooks.
Crozet is also a food-and-drink base. The Monticello Wine Trail, Brew Ridge Trail, and Nelson 151 corridor put dozens of wineries, cideries, breweries, and distilleries within a short drive, including Devils Backbone Brewing Company, which sits on the grounds of Devils Backbone Camp.
Families staying at Misty Mountain Camp Resort have access to on-site amenities including a pool, playgrounds, and a fishing pond, plus easy day trips to Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Loft Mountain Campground operates on a seasonal schedule. Recent opening dates have landed in late April or early May, with the campground typically closing in late October or early November. Skyline Drive itself can close during winter storms and icing events, so shoulder-season travelers should check road status before committing to a Shenandoah stay.
Summer and early fall are the busiest windows. Weekends at Loft Mountain fill early, and Recreation.gov releases reservable sites on a rolling six-month window, with additional inventory opening two weeks and four days before arrival. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October along the Blue Ridge, drawing the year's heaviest crowds and tightest availability.
Private parks around Crozet run longer seasons. Misty Mountain Camp Resort operates year-round, making it and other private options viable choices for late-fall, winter, and early-spring trips when the national-park campgrounds are closed.
How to book campgrounds near Crozet
Loft Mountain Campground reservations are handled through Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777. The park releases reservable sites on a rolling six-month window, and a portion of the campground remains first-come, first-served, secured in person at the ranger station on arrival.
Private parks book directly. Misty Mountain Camp Resort, Waynesboro North 340 Campground, Charlottesville KOA Holiday, and Devils Backbone Camp all take reservations through their own websites or phone lines.
For peak summer weekends and October foliage, book several months ahead. Midweek stays and shoulder-season trips in May or early November generally have wider availability at both national-park and private campgrounds.
What to expect
Hookup expectations vary sharply. Loft Mountain has no electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites, though it provides a dump station and potable water; back-in and pull-through sites can accommodate rigs up to roughly 55 feet. Misty Mountain and Devils Backbone offer hookup sites suitable for larger RVs.
Bears are active throughout Shenandoah and the surrounding foothills. Food, coolers, and scented items must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or the provided food-storage lockers at Loft Mountain. Generator hours in the park are limited to two windows in the morning and afternoon, and quiet hours are strictly enforced.
Cell service is spotty along Skyline Drive and inside the park, but generally reliable at private campgrounds near I-64. Elevation at Loft Mountain sits above 3,300 feet, so nights run noticeably cooler than in Crozet, and fog is common on the ridge.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Crozet, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Crozet, VA?
RV rental in Crozet is approachable for most budgets. On RVezy you will typically see travel trailers from around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $300 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes starting near $250. Because Crozet sits in wine country at the foot of the Blue Ridge, weekday bookings in April, early June, or November can run noticeably less than peak fall foliage weekends. To find a cheap RV rental in Crozet, filter by travel trailers, book mid-week, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: a Sunday to Thursday trip lets you enjoy Pippin Hill and King Family Vineyards without the Saturday crowds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crozet,VirginiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Crozet, Virginia?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Crozet, even for a 32-foot Class C motorhome. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use RVs, and RVezy handles secure ID verification right inside the booking platform. The primary driver must generally be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy. Visiting from overseas to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the license check clears, often within a few hours of booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Crozet RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Crozet includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll toward Skyline Drive with peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout based on the deductible exposure you are comfortable with, not the host. The plan provides substantial financial protection for covered physical damage during your trip, so a small mishap on a gravel campground road does not have to ruin your weekend at Misty Mountain Camp Resort. Pro tip: review each plan tier on the RVezy protection page before checkout so you can pick the level that fits your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Crozet RV trip?
You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (hosts do not set their own), and refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date. This matters in the Blue Ridge where an occasional summer storm or winter ice on Afton Mountain can change plans. The full cancellation terms are explained in the RVezy Help Center and shown during checkout. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides credits so you can rebook. Pro tip: book early to lock in fall foliage dates, then review the cancellation details in your trip dashboard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Crozet RV rental?
Absolutely, and Crozet is one of the most dog-friendly RV destinations in Virginia. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental in Crozet right on RVezy to see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots (many waive extra pet fees for well-behaved pups). Once you arrive, dogs on a six-foot leash are welcome on most trails in Shenandoah National Park, including Stony Man and the Limberlost Trail, and Pro Re Nata Brewery in downtown Crozet has a big dog-friendly patio. Sherando Lake and Mint Springs Valley Park also allow leashed dogs. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a tie-out, since summer humidity in the Blue Ridge can be tough on pups during midday hikes.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Crozet?
Yes, RV delivery in Crozet is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer straight to popular spots like Misty Mountain Camp Resort on Route 250, Loft Mountain Campground in Shenandoah National Park, or your private address in Old Trail, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are set by each host and are commonly charged per mile, with some offering free delivery within a set radius. Message the host before booking to confirm your campground or address. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you are flying into Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) and do not want to tow.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crozet,VirginiaHow far can I drive on a Crozet RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You have plenty of room to roam on a Crozet RV trip. Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage for an added flat fee, perfect for a longer Blue Ridge loop. From Crozet you can reach Shenandoah National Park's Rockfish Gap entrance in 20 minutes (about 14 miles), Charlottesville and Monticello in 25 minutes (15 miles), Natural Bridge State Park in about an hour (52 miles), and Lexington's Virginia Horse Center in roughly 75 minutes. Extra miles typically cost $0.35 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: if you're planning to drive the full 105-mile Skyline Drive plus a section of Blue Ridge Parkway, ask about the unlimited add-on at booking.
virginiadot.org/travel/Where are the best campgrounds near Crozet, VA?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Crozet include Misty Mountain Camp Resort on Route 250 (full hookups, pool, and on-site amenities), Loft Mountain Campground in Shenandoah National Park at mile 79.5 on Skyline Drive (typically open late spring through fall, with sites that fit larger RVs), Big Meadows Campground at higher elevation with cool summer nights, Sherando Lake Recreation Area in George Washington National Forest (with a swimming lake), and Charlottesville KOA in Gordonsville for full-service RV camping in Crozet's backyard. Pro tip: Shenandoah's RV-friendly campgrounds have dump stations and potable water but no hookups, so top off and dump on arrival.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Crozet?
Crozet is a four-season destination, but two windows really shine. Late September through October delivers the legendary Blue Ridge fall foliage along Skyline Drive, with cool daytime highs and crisp nights perfect for campfires. Mid-April through early June is the other sweet spot, with wildflowers in Big Meadows, dogwoods blooming around town, and comfortable mild temperatures. July and August can be warm and humid in the valley but stay noticeably cooler at Loft Mountain's higher elevation. Pro tip: book fall foliage dates 4 to 6 months ahead, since Shenandoah campsites release exactly 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Crozet?
You'll be fine, and Crozet is actually a friendly place to learn. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, awning, and dump procedure, and you can text them anytime during your trip. The drive from Crozet up Route 250 to the Rockfish Gap park entrance is a wide, well-maintained four-lane until you reach the ridge, so you can ease into mountain driving. Avoid taking RVs over 12 feet 8 inches tall through Mary's Rock Tunnel at mile 32.2 on Skyline Drive (use the Thornton Gap exit instead). Pro tip: book delivery for your first trip so the only thing you have to learn at camp is how to relax.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/driving-skyline-drive.htmWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy rental in Crozet includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Afton Mountain or a dead battery at Sherando Lake means one phone call, not a ruined vacation. Roadside help covers common needs like towing, lockouts, jump-starts, tire changes, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a message away through the RVezy app for quick fixes like resetting a generator or troubleshooting the water pump, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can share details fast if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Crozet?
An RV road trip from Crozet practically plans itself. The classic is the Skyline Drive to Blue Ridge Parkway run: head about 14 miles to Rockfish Gap, then drive north 105 miles through Shenandoah National Park or south onto the Parkway toward Peaks of Otter and Roanoke. Wine-and-history lovers can loop Crozet, Charlottesville (Monticello and the Downtown Mall, about 15 miles), Montpelier, and Lexington. Outdoors fans head to Natural Bridge State Park and on to Douthat State Park. Cross-state travel is allowed on RVezy, but international border crossings into Mexico are not permitted. Pro tip: stop at Devils Backbone Brewing in Roseland, about 30 minutes south, for camp-friendly food.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Crozet RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier parts of budgeting a motorhome rental in Crozet. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves (you pay for your tow vehicle), Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A diesel pushers run 7 to 10 MPG. Virginia gas prices typically sit a bit below the national average, with stations in Crozet, Waynesboro, and Charlottesville offering the best rates before you head into the mountains where prices climb. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on $80 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Wawa or Sheetz on Route 250 in Crozet, not at the small stations near park entrances.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Crozet?
Book early and you will have your pick. Shenandoah National Park campgrounds (Big Meadows, Loft Mountain, and Mathews Arm) release sites 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov, and fall weekends sell out quickly. For Virginia State Parks like Shenandoah River and Douthat, reservations open 11 months ahead through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. Private parks like Misty Mountain Camp Resort and Charlottesville KOA usually have availability 2 to 4 weeks out except over holidays. Pro tip: if you are targeting October leaf-peeping at Big Meadows, set a calendar alarm for 10:00 a.m. Eastern on the day exactly six months before your arrival date, then refresh Recreation.gov the moment it opens.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232491What are local driving conditions like around Crozet?
Driving an RV around Crozet is very manageable with a little awareness. Route 250 and I-64 are wide and modern all the way from Crozet to the Rockfish Gap park entrance, and around-town roads like Three Notch'd Road and Crozet Avenue are RV-friendly. Once you climb onto Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway, expect a 35 MPH speed limit, frequent overlooks, and tight switchbacks, easy in a Class B or C but slower going in a 35-foot Class A. Trailers and RVs over 12 feet 8 inches cannot pass through Mary's Rock Tunnel. Summer afternoon thunderstorms and occasional winter ice on Afton Mountain are the main weather watch-outs. Pro tip: download offline maps before you go, since cell service drops on Skyline Drive.
511virginia.org/What amenities and hookups do Crozet-area campgrounds offer?
You'll find a full range of options for RV camping Crozet visitors love. Private parks like Misty Mountain Camp Resort and Charlottesville KOA offer full hookups with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, free WiFi, dump stations, propane fill, hot showers, and laundry. Shenandoah National Park's Big Meadows, Loft Mountain, and Mathews Arm campgrounds are no-hookup but provide potable water fill stations, dump stations, flush toilets, and amphitheaters, with Loft Mountain adding showers and a small camp store. Sherando Lake in George Washington National Forest has bear-proof food boxes at each site. Pro tip: arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks if you're heading to a national park site, since the dump station can have a line on Sunday mornings.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/gwj/recarea/?recid=73911What's inside the RVs I can rent in Crozet?
You'll feel right at home. Most campervan rental Crozet options sleep 2 to 4 and include a kitchenette with fridge, two-burner stove, sink, plus a wet bath in larger Class B vans. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 5 to 8 with a full kitchen, separate bathroom with shower, dinette, and queen bed over the cab, while travel trailers and fifth wheels often include slide-outs, full kitchens, and entertainment systems. Air conditioning, furnace, microwave, and propane stove are standard on almost every listing, and many include a generator, outdoor speakers, or a flat-screen TV. Every passenger needs a seat with a working seatbelt during travel. Pro tip: use RVezy's filter to match sleeps count, then read the amenities list to confirm WiFi hotspot, generator, or outdoor grill.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Crozet RV rental?
You can customize your rig to match your trip. Common RVezy add-ons in Crozet include linen and kitchen packages ($35 to $75), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), portable grills, camp chairs, bike racks, fire pits, and tank-prep kits (so you don't have to deal with the dump station at all, usually $50 to $100). Delivery and setup to a Crozet-area campground is the most popular extra. Pickup and drop-off windows are typically 2:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m., though many hosts are flexible if you ask. Mileage policies vary by host but are clearly posted on each listing. Pro tip: bundling the linen, kitchen, and tank-prep packages together often costs less than buying them separately, just ask the host.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/How does payment and the security deposit work?
It is straightforward and fully online. When you book an RV rental in Crozet through RVezy, your payment is processed securely through the platform (no cash or e-transfers to the host), with a portion charged at booking and the balance due closer to your trip. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and is released back to you after drop-off, assuming everything is returned in good shape. The deposit is separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues, do a video walkaround with your host at pickup and again at return. Pro tip: snap photos of the tanks, mileage, and any existing scratches so there is zero ambiguity when your deposit is released.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from Crozet a good idea?
It is one of the best family adventures in Virginia. A family RV trip in Crozet usually combines a base camp at Misty Mountain Camp Resort (with pool, mini-golf, and on-site dining) with day trips into Shenandoah National Park for kid-friendly hikes like Dark Hollow Falls and the Limberlost Trail, plus seasonal apple picking at Carter Mountain Orchard just east of town. Crozet itself is known for Crozet Pizza, the Crozet Connector Trails, and the seasonal Crozet Farmers Market. Class C motorhomes that sleep 6 to 8 are the sweet spot for families and easy to find on RVezy. Pro tip: schedule a Junior Ranger badge stop at the Byrd Visitor Center at Big Meadows, the kids will be hooked on national parks for life.
