Dayton is a small town in Rockingham County in Virginia's central Shenandoah Valley, roughly five miles southwest of Harrisonburg. It sits at about 1,280 feet elevation with the George Washington National Forest providing numerous primitive camping options nearby. The valley floor around town is flat and open, while the Allegheny ridges rise sharply to the west and the Blue Ridge crest sits about 25 miles to the east. To the west, Hone Quarry in the George Washington National Forest sits within a mile of Hone Quarry Reservoir, with trailheads leading to popular rock climbing areas, a stream, and a short hike to a nearby waterfall. Private options in the area include Shenandoah Valley Campground, Stokesville Lodge and Campground, Harrisonburg / Shenandoah Valley KOA Holiday, Waynesboro North 340 Campground, and Endless Caverns RV Resort and Cavern Tours. These give RV renters full hookups, showers, and reservable sites that the national park and forest campgrounds do not offer.
