Campgrounds and RV parks near Edinburg, VA

Shenandoah National Park is the main draw. The park has over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, with some leading to waterfalls and viewpoints and others winding deep into the forests. Mathews Arm Campground is located near Overall Run Falls, which at 93 feet has the highest drop of all the falls in Shenandoah National Park, and a moderately strenuous trail to the falls is accessible from the campground. The George Washington National Forest surrounds the valley with hiking, mountain biking, and horseback trails. The Peters Mill Run and Taskers Gap OHV trail system, in the Lee Ranger District, offers about 36 miles of trails for Jeeps, UTVs, ATVs, and motorcycles, and is the largest OHV network in the state. Fort Valley Ranch Campground runs guided trail rides into the national forest for beginners through experienced riders. Off-trail activities include fishing on Stoney Creek and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, tubing and kayaking, Luray Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns, and wineries along the Shenandoah Wine Trail.

The Shenandoah Valley has four clear seasons. The area has a humid continental climate with strong seasonal contrasts. Summers are warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, spring brings the heaviest rainfall of the year with May the wettest month, and winters are cold with regular snowfall while remaining the driest season overall. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Bugs ease off, humidity drops, and leaf color typically peaks in mid to late October, which is also the busiest weekend period for campgrounds near Skyline Drive. Book well ahead for any October weekend. All Shenandoah National Park campgrounds operate spring through fall, closing in winter when Skyline Drive often sees snow and ice. Campgrounds typically open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, weather permitting. Skyline Drive may close temporarily for inclement weather, so check status before heading up, especially outside summer. Private campgrounds around Edinburg generally operate on longer seasons, and some stay open year-round with limited services in winter.

Most private campgrounds near Edinburg are small and family-run. Creekside Campground sits minutes off I-81 along Stoney Creek and makes a workable layover or base camp for the Shenandoah Valley and local Civil War sites. Fort Valley Ranch Campground is more rustic and horse-oriented, with shaded campsites, hookup options, a dump station, fire rings, and picnic tables. National forest and national park sites are more primitive. Shenandoah National Park campgrounds have no RV hookups, though dump and fill stations with potable water are provided. Expect vault toilets and limited or no cell service in Fort Valley and along forest roads. Black bears are active in Shenandoah National Park and adjacent forest. Store food in bear boxes or hard-sided vehicles, and keep coolers off the picnic table overnight. Skyline Drive has a 35 mph limit and frequent overlooks, so plan longer drive times than the mileage suggests.
