Campgrounds near Lovingston, Virginia
Lovingston sits in Nelson County at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, within a short drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, and the James River. The area suits RV travelers looking for mountain scenery, river access, and easy trips to Charlottesville, Staunton, and Shenandoah National Park.
Devils Backbone Camp is centrally located in the Rockfish Valley near the wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries of Nelson County, a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It offers full-hookup RV sites, standard non-electric sites, and primitive tent camping, and it stays open year-round. To the southwest, Horseshoe Equestrian Campground at James River State Park provides electric and water sites geared to travelers with horse trailers but open to standard RVs when available.
Further up the Blue Ridge, Crabtree Falls Campgrounds, Montebello Camping Resort, and Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort put trout streams, waterfalls, and Appalachian Trail access within easy reach. Together, these options cover full-hookup resort camping, state-park hookup sites, and rustic mountain settings.
Things to do near Lovingston
Hiking is the headline draw. The Crabtree Falls trail climbs past a series of cascades often described as the tallest vertical-drop waterfall east of the Mississippi, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the ridge at multiple accessible trailheads. From Devils Backbone Camp it is a short drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Reids Gap trailhead on the Appalachian Trail.
On the water, the James River supports paddling, tubing, and fishing, and a full-service canoe livery operates seasonally at James River State Park. Mountain streams around Montebello are stocked for trout.
Off-trail, the Nelson 151 corridor links craft breweries, cideries, wineries, and distilleries, with more than 20 producers within a short drive. Charlottesville and Monticello sit within about an hour for a day trip.

Camping season peaks from late spring through October. Spring and fall bring mild weather and vivid scenery, while summer delivers warm days ideal for river activities and the busiest campground weekends. Fall foliage in the Blue Ridge draws heavy weekend traffic in October, and sites can fill weeks in advance.
Seasonal openings matter for RV planning. The primitive campgrounds at James River State Park are open year-round; however, Red Oak Campground and Horseshoe Equestrian Campground (electric/water, no sewer) operate during camping season only, from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Devils Backbone Camp runs year-round, and the Montebello resorts typically have long seasons, though higher-elevation sites can be cold and wet in shoulder months.
One fire rule catches many campers off guard. Under the Code of Virginia, open fires (including wood and charcoal) are prohibited between February 15 and April 30, except between 4 p.m. and midnight. Self-contained camping stoves remain permitted.
How to book a site near Lovingston
For state park sites at Horseshoe Equestrian Campground, book through the Virginia State Parks reservation system at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK (7275). Reservations open up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, and same-day camping reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. Popular weekends can sell out on the day the booking window opens.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Devils Backbone Camp, Crabtree Falls Campgrounds, Montebello Camping Resort, and Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Devils Backbone uses an online reservation system, and walk-up sites may be available at check-in when space allows.
For peak fall foliage and summer holiday weekends, book several months out. Cancellation-alert services can help when a preferred campground is showing full.
What to expect
Sites near Lovingston range from full-hookup resort setups to state-park sites without sewer. At James River State Park, sites do not have sewer hookups, and guests use the dump station near the park entrance. Many sites are shaded with large tent pads and wide driveways that accommodate larger rigs.
Roads into the mountains are narrow and winding. James River State Park lies roughly 20 miles from Appomattox and Amherst, with narrow approaches on SR-605 and SR-606. Drivers heading to Devils Backbone should follow signed routes rather than GPS, since some nearby roads have sharp turns, steep grades, and low overpasses. Drivers of larger rigs should map their route in advance and avoid unpaved Forest Service shortcuts.
Most parks in the area ask campers not to import firewood to prevent the spread of wood-dwelling insects and diseases. Buy wood locally or on site.
