Campgrounds and RV parks near Luray, VA

Skyline Drive is the anchor activity. The road runs the length of Shenandoah National Park, with 75 scenic overlooks and over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Popular day hikes from the Big Meadows area include Dark Hollow Falls and the Lewis Falls loop, both reachable from the Thornton Gap entrance closest to Luray. Luray Caverns, minutes from town, is one of the largest caverns on the East Coast, with more than a mile of paved walkway, a garden maze, a car museum, and a heritage village on the same property. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River supports tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and smallmouth bass fishing, with several outfitters running shuttles. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Luray or Luray RV Resort and Campground will find pools, splash features, and organized activities on site, useful on rainy afternoons or when kids need a break from driving Skyline Drive.

Luray has a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by hot and humid summers and cold winters. Summers are warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, and July is the warmest month, with average highs around 85°F. June, July, and August are the peak booking window for private parks and for Big Meadows, so sites can fill months in advance on weekends. Spring brings wildflowers in the park and mild daytime temperatures, though nights on Skyline Drive can still drop near freezing. Fall is the second peak, with foliage colors typically peaking in early to mid October along the Blue Ridge. Elevation matters: temperatures on Skyline Drive often run 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in town, so layers are essential when moving between valley campgrounds and park hikes. Winter is the off-season. Park campgrounds typically open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, weather permitting, and Skyline Drive may close temporarily for inclement weather. Luray RV Resort and Campground operates seasonally from spring through late fall, while Shenandoah River State Park stays open for camping year-round.

Cell service is limited throughout Shenandoah National Park, so downloading maps and the Recreation.gov app before entering is important. There is a per-vehicle entrance fee valid for seven days, and the park is moving to cashless payment. Skyline Drive can close temporarily for snow, ice, or fog, especially outside of summer. Black bears are common in the park and around private campgrounds nearby, so food, trash, and scented items must be stored inside vehicles or hard-sided RVs. Rangers can issue fines for improper food storage. Only kiln-dried, heat-treated firewood is permitted inside the park because of invasive insect concerns. RVers should note that park campsites have no hookups and generator hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 60 decibel limit. Loft Mountain and Lewis Mountain have shorter site-length limits than Big Meadows. Private parks in Luray handle larger rigs, full hookups, and pets more easily.
