Campgrounds and RV parks near McGaheysville, VA

Skyline Drive is the primary draw. The road runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with views available from any of the 75 scenic overlooks. Shenandoah National Park has over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, with some routes leading to waterfalls or lookouts and others winding deep into the forest and wilderness. Off-park activities cluster around Massanutten Resort (skiing in winter, waterpark and mountain biking in summer), Harrisonburg's historic downtown, and cavern tours. Endless Caverns RV Resort and Cavern Tours offers guided tours of underground caves, plus a pool and a stocked catch-and-release pond. Wildlife viewing is easy across the region. Black bears, wild turkey, deer, and songbirds are abundant throughout the park.

The camping season in this area runs roughly late spring through fall, varying by campground. Loft Mountain Campground typically opens in late April or early May and closes in early November, and Endless Caverns runs a similar late-March to mid-November window. The Harrisonburg / Shenandoah Valley KOA Holiday stays open year-round with limited off-season services. Summer is warm and comfortable at elevation. Elevations along Skyline Drive range from 2,000 to 4,050 feet, producing comfortable summer temperatures with highs in the 70s and 80s and lows in the 50s and 60s. Thunderstorms are common on summer afternoons. Fall is the busiest stretch. October brings peak leaf season with some of the most vibrant hardwood color on the East Coast, and spring from April through May delivers wildflower blooms and cascading waterfalls. Peak demand hits October weekends for fall foliage, along with Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and Big Meadows October Saturday nights sell out within hours. Winter closes park campgrounds along Skyline Drive, while the valley KOA and Massanutten remain accessible.

Expectations vary sharply by campground type. In-park sites are dry camping. There are no RV hookups, but a dump station with potable water is available, and generator hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 60-decibel limit. At Loft Mountain, 153 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 20 and 55 feet. Private resorts offer the full utility package. Endless Caverns takes RVs up to 50 feet, accepts big rigs, and has 72 pull-throughs and 148 full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service. The KOA offers similar full-hookup service. Bring a bear-aware food-storage plan for any park-adjacent stay, plan for spotty cell service on Skyline Drive, and pack quarters if staying at Loft Mountain since showers are coin-operated.
