Campgrounds and RV parks near New Market, VA

The main draw is Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive runs along 105 miles of the Blue Ridge in Virginia, with dozens of overlooks and trailheads accessible from the Thornton Gap and Swift Run Gap entrances. Popular hikes include waterfall routes and Appalachian Trail segments, with Mathews Arm Campground providing access to Overall Run Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the park. Off the ridge, the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and the Virginia Museum of the Civil War sit in town. Luray Caverns lies roughly 30 miles east, and Endless Caverns is on the edge of New Market itself. The South Fork Shenandoah River supports tubing, kayaking, and smallmouth-bass fishing, and George Washington National Forest roads west of town open onto backcountry hiking and dispersed camping.

Camping season in and around New Market runs roughly late March through early November. All park campgrounds open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, weather permitting. Private valley campgrounds typically operate on a longer shoulder-season calendar, with some sites open year-round for RVs. Fall is the busiest window. Leaf color on the Blue Ridge draws heavy weekend traffic in October, and October weekends for fall foliage and Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends are the most competitive, and Big Meadows October Saturday nights sell out within hours. Summer brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms; midweek availability is generally better than weekends at all park campgrounds. Winter camping is limited to private parks. Developed park campgrounds close by early November, and Skyline Drive may close temporarily for inclement weather, so travelers should check status before heading up, especially outside summer. The park remains accessible year-round for day use when the road is open.

Private RV parks along the valley floor generally offer full hookups, dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Sites at Endless Caverns are cut into wooded acreage on a mountainside, while the KOA and Luray RV Resort provide more amenity-driven family layouts with pools, cabins, and river access. In-park campgrounds are more basic. Site types include tent-only and RV-friendly sites, with flush toilets and potable water. There are no RV hook-ups provided, though a dump and fill station with potable water is available. Black bears are active across the region, so food and coolers must be stored in hard-sided vehicles or bear boxes. Cell service is spotty along Skyline Drive and in forest-service areas west of New Market. Fuel is limited on the ridge, so top off in the valley before entering the park.
