Campgrounds and RV parks near Piney Mountain, VA

Shenandoah National Park is the primary draw. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with 75 scenic overlooks. Trails to the Big Run Wilderness area are accessible from Loft Mountain, waterfalls are common along popular routes, and wildlife viewing brings sightings of black bears, wild turkey, deer, and birds. Off the mountain, the Charlottesville area offers a dense cluster of activities. Several wineries with tours and tastings are located close to the KOA, and the Monticello Wine Trail links more than 30 vineyards across the region. Walnut Creek Park is an Albemarle County park with a lake for fishing, boating, and swimming, plus hiking and mountain-biking trails. Carter Mountain Orchard, close to Monticello, is open for seasonal pick-your-own apples and peaches, with a harvest festival on select fall weekends.

The Shenandoah National Park campgrounds run on a defined season. Lewis Mountain typically opens in late March, while higher-elevation Loft Mountain usually opens in early May. Both close by late October or early November, weather permitting. Skyline Drive, the park's main road, may close temporarily for inclement weather, so check status before heading up, especially outside summer. Fall is the busiest window on the ridge. Leaf season pulls heavy weekend traffic to Skyline Drive and fills reservable loops at Loft Mountain well in advance. Winter is the off-season: all front-country campgrounds are closed, and sections of Skyline Drive often close due to snow and ice, sometimes for extended periods. Dispersed backcountry camping is permitted year-round with a free permit. Private campgrounds outside the park operate on longer seasons. Charlottesville KOA Holiday and Shenandoah Crossing Resort and Country Club typically stay open through the shoulder seasons and offer full hookups when park campgrounds have closed for the year, which makes them useful bases for late-fall foliage trips and early-spring visits before Skyline Drive reopens fully.

Expect a real split between park camping and full-service RV parks. Inside Shenandoah, sites are wooded and quiet, with no electric, water, or sewer hookups at any campground. Loft Mountain has a dump station and potable water, and generators are limited to designated hours with a 60 decibel cap. Loft Mountain has 207 campsites, many able to accommodate RVs and trailers. Wildlife management is a real consideration. Bears, deer, raccoons, and skunks are year-round residents of Shenandoah, so food, garbage, cookware, and all scented items must be stored in a food storage locker or a locked vehicle when not in active use. Cell service on Skyline Drive is spotty, so download maps and reservation confirmations before entering the park. At the private properties expect a different pace: paved pads, full hookups, pools, and Wi-Fi, plus easy access to Charlottesville dining, groceries, and the Monticello Wine Trail.
