Camping near Shenandoah, Virginia
Shenandoah sits in Virginia's Page County along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, directly below the central district of Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains, west of Washington, D.C. The park stretches 105 miles and has four entrances: Front Royal, Thornton Gap, Swift Run Gap, and Rockfish Gap. The town is a practical staging point for RV travelers, with the Swift Run Gap entrance and Skyline Drive within a short drive.
Camping options split into two categories. Inside the park, four front-country campgrounds (Mathews Arm, Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain, and Loft Mountain) provide over 600 sites from the northern to southern ends of Skyline Drive, all without hookups. Lewis Mountain Campground sits at mile 57.5 on Skyline Drive and is the closest park campground to the Swift Run Gap entrance used from the town of Shenandoah.
Outside the park boundary, private resorts handle rigs that need full utilities. Harrisonburg / Shenandoah Valley KOA Holiday, Endless Caverns RV Resort and Cavern Tours, and Luray RV Resort and Campground offer hookups, dump stations, and amenities that the park campgrounds do not.
Things to do near Shenandoah
Skyline Drive is the main draw. Shenandoah National Park has over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Some trails lead to a waterfall or viewpoint while others wind deep into the forest and wilderness. Popular day hikes include Bearfence Mountain, Hawksbill, Stony Man, and the Rose River Falls loop.
Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stunning views are visible from any of the 75 scenic overlooks. The posted speed limit is 35 mph, so budget extra time. Wildlife viewing is also a popular pastime, with black bears, wild turkey, deer, birds and countless other animals thriving in the park.
Off the ridge, Luray Caverns and Endless Caverns offer underground tours that work as rain-day plans. The town of Luray, the Shenandoah River, and small farms and orchards along US-340 round out an itinerary.

Season matters more here than in most RV destinations. All park campgrounds are open spring through fall, closing in winter when Skyline Drive often sees snow and ice. All campgrounds typically open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, weather permitting.
Summer brings the largest family crowds and the most reliable weather for hiking. Elevation helps: campgrounds along Skyline Drive sit near 3,500 feet, so mornings often stay cool with mountain mist while lowland Virginia bakes. Afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Fall is the peak season for foliage and the hardest time to get a site. Starting late September and peaking in mid-October, the foliage transforms into brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows, a magnet for visitors. Campgrounds stay busy through late October, especially on weekends around peak leaf color, so expect crowds and book well in advance for early to mid-October weekends. Winter closes park campgrounds; private resorts near town remain the option for cold-weather trips.
How to book a campsite
Park campgrounds and private resorts use different systems. All Shenandoah National Park campgrounds use the Recreation.gov system for advance reservations. The reservation window operates on a rolling 6-month basis, for example, if you plan to camp on July 4, the booking window opens on January 4 at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Popular dates, including summer holidays and October weekends, can fill within minutes of opening.
Lewis Mountain works differently: it is first-come, first-served only, using self-registration on-site, with cashless payment via the Recreation.gov app, and checkout is at noon. Plan to arrive by mid-morning on weekends during peak season.
Private campgrounds such as Harrisonburg / Shenandoah Valley KOA Holiday, Endless Caverns RV Resort and Cavern Tours, and Luray RV Resort and Campground book directly through their own websites or the KOA app. Reserve fall foliage weekends several months out.
What to expect on site
Inside the park, expect no hookups. There are no RV hook-ups but there is a dump station with potable water available 7 miles north on Skyline Drive at Big Meadows. Generator use is regulated: generator hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 60 decibel limit. Cell service is spotty; download offline maps before entering.
Bears are active throughout the park. Store food, coolers, and scented items in bear boxes or inside the RV whenever unattended. Sites include a picnic table and fire ring.
Private resorts near town offer the amenities park campgrounds lack: full hookups, showers, laundry, pools, Wi-Fi, and pull-through sites suited to larger rigs. A common strategy is a night or two inside the park for the location, then a private resort to dump tanks and recharge.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Shenandoah, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Shenandoah, VA?
RV rental in Shenandoah is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Blue Ridge Mountains. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 nightly. Booking midweek or during the quieter winter and early-spring months can shave 20 to 30 percent off peak fall foliage pricing, which usually peaks in early to mid October. For a cheap RV rental Shenandoah travelers love, filter by travel trailers under $125 and look for hosts offering free local delivery. Tip: book at least two months ahead for October weekends, when leaf-peepers fill every campground along Skyline Drive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shenandoah%2C%20VirginiaWhat do I need to rent an RV in Shenandoah, Virginia?
Renting an RV in Shenandoah is refreshingly simple. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and a standard Class D license is all Virginia requires to drive most motorhomes or tow a travel trailer under 26,000 pounds. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is needed. RVezy verifies approved drivers during booking, so there is no extra DMV trip or paperwork. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly verification moves, often the same day, so you can lock in your Shenandoah RV trip without delay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Shenandoah protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Shenandoah includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Skyline Drive with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the RV at the coverage level you choose during checkout, so you control your comfort zone rather than the host. Roadside help covers tire issues, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing, which is especially reassuring on the winding 105-mile Skyline Drive where cell service can be patchy. Tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you cross into the park, since signal drops in spots between Front Royal and Big Meadows.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Shenandoah RV booking?
Booking your Shenandoah RV trip is low-risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a grace period right after booking so you can change your mind with confidence. If weather, wildfire smoke, or a Skyline Drive closure affects your plans, RVezy's support team reviews qualifying situations case by case. Because the policy depends on how far out your trip start is and the circumstances, the full details are kept on the RVezy website rather than displayed in each listing. Tip: reach out to RVezy support early if a winter storm closes Skyline Drive, since the park sometimes shuts the road within hours of icy forecasts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Shenandoah?
Absolutely, Shenandoah is one of the most dog-welcoming national parks in the country, with more than 480 miles of trails open to leashed pets. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Shenandoah, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of hosts who welcome dogs, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Bring proof of rabies vaccination, a 6-foot leash, and waste bags. In-park campgrounds like Big Meadows and Loft Mountain allow pets at sites, and the Shenandoah River State Park also welcomes them. Pro tip: Stony Man and Bearfence trails are off-limits to pets, but the Limberlost and Frazier Discovery trails are paw-friendly favorites.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Shenandoah?
Yes, RV delivery in Shenandoah is widely available and a game-changer for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will drive your rental directly to popular spots like Big Meadows Campground, Mathews Arm, Loft Mountain, or Shenandoah River State Park, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile from the host's base, and some offer free delivery within a set radius. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it. Tip: delivery is the smartest play if you're nervous about driving a motorhome through Marys Rock Tunnel, which has a 12-foot 8-inch clearance.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shenandoah%2C%20VirginiaHow far can I drive on an RV trip from Shenandoah?
Plenty far, and the routes are spectacular. From Shenandoah, you're 75 miles to Washington, D.C., 95 miles to Charlottesville and Monticello, 220 miles to Virginia Beach, and just 105 miles south along the Blue Ridge Parkway to Roanoke. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some listing RV rental with unlimited mileage for true road-trippers. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Shenandoah down the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Great Smoky Mountains, message a host with an unlimited-mileage listing before booking to confirm the route.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds for RV camping in Shenandoah?
You have fantastic choices for RV camping Shenandoah travelers rave about. Inside the park, Big Meadows Campground (Mile 51.2) is central and walkable to the Byrd Visitor Center, Mathews Arm (Mile 22.1) is best from the Front Royal entrance, Loft Mountain (Mile 79.5) is the largest and sits atop Big Flat Mountain, and Lewis Mountain (Mile 57.5) is the smallest and quietest. None offer full hookups, but all have potable water and dump stations except Lewis Mountain. Just outside the park, Shenandoah River State Park has 31 water-and-electric sites that fit rigs up to 60 feet. Pro tip: Big Meadows is your best bet for first-timers thanks to its dump station, amphitheater, and proximity to Dark Hollow Falls.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time to visit Shenandoah in an RV?
Shenandoah is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spots are late April through May and September through early November. Spring brings wildflowers, 70s during the day, and the park's annual Wildflower Weekend in May, while fall delivers the legendary leaf-peeping that peaks in early October. Summer highs reach the mid-80s in the valley but stay roughly 10 degrees cooler atop Skyline Drive, making it pleasant for hiking. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s, with snow and occasional Skyline Drive closures. Pro tip: book a midweek motorhome rental Shenandoah trip in late September to catch early color without the October-weekend traffic jams at Hawksbill and Stony Man overlooks.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/weather.htmI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Shenandoah?
You'll be just fine, and Shenandoah is actually a great first-time renting an RV destination. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation at pickup, walking you through propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, and the dump process before you ever turn the key. Skyline Drive has a 35 mph speed limit and wide pull-offs, so you'll never feel rushed. Hosts are also reachable by message throughout your trip if a question comes up. Pro tip: if you're nervous about driving, choose a Class B campervan or a 20-to-25-foot Class C, both easy to maneuver through Marys Rock Tunnel's 12-foot 8-inch clearance, and book a host who offers delivery to Big Meadows so your first drive is just exploring overlooks.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/skyline-drive.htmWhat if something breaks down during my Shenandoah RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're stuck at Thornton Gap or have a flat near Loft Mountain. Roadside covers towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. For mechanical or appliance issues, your host is your first call, and most respond within minutes since they know their RV inside and out. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip. Tip: cell service is spotty on Skyline Drive, so note the nearest visitor center (Dickey Ridge at Mile 4.6 or Byrd at Mile 51) where you can get help if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Shenandoah RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts allow interstate travel, so you can easily combine your Shenandoah trip with stops in West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, or D.C. Travel into Canada is permitted with some hosts depending on their insurance, so just message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental, since insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Shenandoah include heading south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville (about 350 miles), east to the Outer Banks (about 350 miles), or north to Gettysburg (about 115 miles). Pro tip: confirm any cross-border plans in writing through the RVezy messaging system so everything is on record.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat about fuel costs for an RV trip in Shenandoah?
Fuel budgeting in Shenandoah is straightforward. Virginia gas prices typically run about $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon, often cheaper than neighboring Maryland or D.C. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches average 7 to 10 MPG. The entire 105-mile Skyline Drive uses surprisingly little gas thanks to the 35 mph speed limit. Inside the park, fuel is only available at Big Meadows Wayside (self-pay in winter), so fill up in Luray, Front Royal, or Waynesboro before entering. Pro tip: a typical 3-day, 300-mile Shenandoah loop in a 24-foot Class C costs roughly $90 to $110 in fuel, easy to split between a family of four.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shenandoah?
For peace of mind, book in-park campgrounds as soon as your dates are firm. Recreation.gov releases Shenandoah National Park campsites up to six months in advance, and Big Meadows, Loft Mountain, and Mathews Arm fill quickly for October weekends and summer holidays. Shenandoah River State Park reservations open 11 months ahead through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. Lewis Mountain and parts of Mathews Arm hold first-come, first-served sites that can rescue last-minute trips midweek. Pro tip: if Big Meadows is sold out, set a free availability alert through Recreation.gov, since cancellations pop up daily as travel plans shift, especially within two weeks of the date.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2733What are the driving conditions like in and around Shenandoah?
Driving conditions around Shenandoah are RV-friendly with a few quirks worth knowing. Skyline Drive is paved, well-maintained, and capped at 35 mph, with frequent pull-offs perfect for big rigs. The single must-know detail: Marys Rock Tunnel just south of Thornton Gap has a 12-foot 8-inch clearance, so RVs taller than that need to detour via Route 211. US-340 and US-211 leading into the park are wide two-lane highways, easy in any motorhome. In winter, Skyline Drive can close for ice or snow, so check the park's road status line at (540) 999-3500 before heading up. Pro tip: enter at Swift Run Gap (Mile 65.5) to avoid the tunnel entirely with a taller rig.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/conditions.htmWhat amenities will I find at Shenandoah-area campgrounds?
Expect a mix that fits any travel style. Inside Shenandoah National Park, all four RV-friendly campgrounds (Big Meadows, Mathews Arm, Loft Mountain, Lewis Mountain) offer fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, and potable water, but no hookups. Dump stations are available at Big Meadows, Mathews Arm, and Loft Mountain. For full hookups, head just outside the park to Shenandoah River State Park, Harrisonburg/Shenandoah Valley KOA, or Misty Mountain Camp Resort in Greenwood, all with water, electric, and sewer. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading up to Skyline Drive since fill stations close seasonally, and plan to dump tanks on your way out at Big Meadows to avoid a return trip.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Shenandoah?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical RVezy rental in Shenandoah comes with a full kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, climate control, dining seating with seatbelts, and basics like pots, pans, and dishes. Most include a TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor chairs, and a propane grill. Generators are common in Class C and Class A rentals, perfect since Shenandoah's in-park campgrounds have no electric hookups. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm bedding and towels, since some include them free and others offer them as a small add-on, saving you from packing extras.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/things2do.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Shenandoah rental?
RVezy hosts offer thoughtful add-ons that elevate your Shenandoah trip. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30), bike racks, kayak racks, generators ($25 to $50 per day), and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Luray, Front Royal, Harrisonburg, or Charlottesville, and most hosts offer delivery for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering unlimited mileage for an upgrade. Tip: ask about a pre-stocked propane tank and a leveling-block kit, both lifesavers at non-hookup sites like Big Meadows where you'll rely on the RV's own systems.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shenandoah%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Shenandoah on RVezy, you pay the full trip cost up front through the platform, never directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and released after your trip ends and the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Deposits typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. Tip: take a quick video walk-around of the RV at both pickup and drop-off, including the odometer and propane level. It takes two minutes and is the single best way to ensure your full deposit comes back without questions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Shenandoah during winter?
Yes, and a winter Shenandoah RV trip is one of the best-kept secrets in Virginia. Many RVezy hosts keep their listings available year-round, and prices often drop 25 to 40 percent off peak-season rates. Look for rentals advertised with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power capability so freezing temps don't catch you off guard. Most in-park campgrounds close from late November through March, but Shenandoah River State Park camps year-round with electric hookups, and Skyline Drive remains open whenever weather allows. Pro tip: filter for rigs with a furnace and ask your host to demo the winterization features at pickup, then base yourself at Shenandoah River State Park for hookups and snowy Blue Ridge views without the crowds.
