Campgrounds and RV parks near Skyland Estates, VA

Skyland Estates is a small census-designated place in Warren County, Virginia, just north of Linden and a short drive from Front Royal. It sits within easy reach of the northern entrance to Shenandoah National Park and the start of Skyline Drive. The area is a practical base for a Blue Ridge trip. Private campgrounds cluster along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and US-340 south of Front Royal, while Shenandoah National Park itself operates four front-country campgrounds, Mathews Arm, Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain, and Loft Mountain, spread from the northern to southern ends of Skyline Drive. Together they cover everything from full-hookup private camping to rustic national park sites. Nearby private options include Twin Rivers RV Campground, North Fork Resort Associates, Gooney Creek Campgrounds, Skyline Ranch Resort, and Watermelon Park and RV Campground. Gooney Creek Campgrounds sits on the banks of Gooney Creek about 5 miles south of Front Royal, 4 miles past the Skyline Drive entrance, and 3 miles past Skyline Caverns, directly across from the Shenandoah River.

Shenandoah National Park campgrounds book through the federal system. Big Meadows, Loft Mountain, and Mathews Arm use Recreation.gov for advance reservations, with a rolling 6-month booking window that opens at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Popular dates such as summer holidays and October weekends can fill within minutes of opening, so log in early. Not every site is reservable. Lewis Mountain is first-come, first-served only, and Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain use a hybrid system with some reservable sites and the rest kept for first-come arrivals. Checking Recreation.gov 14 to 30 days before a trip catches cancellations, which cluster around the 14-day refund deadline, and Tuesday and Wednesday nights are easiest to grab. Private campgrounds book directly through their own websites or by phone.
