Campgrounds near Stanley, Virginia
Stanley sits in Page County in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, between Luray and the town of Shenandoah, with easy access to the western side of Shenandoah National Park via US 340. The Thornton Gap entrance on US 211 near Luray and the Swift Run Gap entrance on US 33 near Elkton are the closest Skyline Drive access points. The town is a practical base for RV travelers who want national-park access without camping at elevation, plus short runs to Luray Caverns and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River.
Lodging options range from full-hookup private parks in the valley to rustic national-park sites on the ridge. Luray RV Resort and Campground and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Luray offer standard hookups and family amenities, while Spacious Skies Shenandoah Views provides sites on the valley floor with mountain views.
Inside the park itself, Big Meadows Campground sits at mile 51 on Skyline Drive. There are no RV hookups, but a dump station with potable water is available. RVers who need power and sewer should plan to stay in the valley and drive up for day trips.
Things to do near Stanley
Shenandoah National Park is the main draw. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with 75 scenic overlooks, and the park protects more than 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Popular day hikes from the Big Meadows area include Dark Hollow Falls, which starts about a mile north of the campground, plus Lewis Falls and nearby ridge trails leading to Hawksbill and Rose River.
Off the mountain, Luray Caverns is a short drive from town, and the South Fork Shenandoah River supports fishing, tubing, and kayaking through the warmer months. Wildlife viewing is popular, with black bears, deer, wild turkey, and many bird species active across the park. The Big Meadows area itself is known for its resident deer population. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Luray also have access to on-site pools and organized activities.

41° / 25°F 70 mmCold and snowy; in-park campgrounds closed
The camping season in this corner of Virginia is driven by Shenandoah National Park's calendar. Big Meadows Campground is closed in winter, typically from late November to early May, and other front-country park campgrounds follow a similar window. Skyline Drive itself can close on short notice during ice and snow events, so shoulder-season travelers should check park status before committing to an in-park site.
Summer is the busiest period, with valley highs in the mid 80s and cooler nights up on the ridge. Reservations for park campgrounds should be made well in advance, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage season when sites fill quickly. Fall color typically peaks in mid to late October along the ridge and a week or two later in the valley around Stanley.
Spring is quieter but variable, bringing wildflowers, active waterfalls, and cold nights on the crest. Private valley parks like Luray RV Resort and Campground and Spacious Skies Shenandoah Views generally operate a longer season than the in-park campgrounds.
How to book campgrounds near Stanley
National-park sites and private parks use different systems. Reservations for Big Meadows Campground are made through Recreation.gov, the official reservation system for the National Park Service, with a rolling booking window that opens up to six months in advance. Some sites at other Shenandoah campgrounds, such as Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain, are also offered first-come, first-served.
Private campgrounds around Luray and Stanley, including Luray RV Resort and Campground, Spacious Skies Shenandoah Views, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Luray, take reservations directly through their own websites or call centers. Summer weekends, the July 4th holiday, and October foliage weekends sell out first, so book those windows several months ahead.
A park entrance fee applies per vehicle in addition to any campground fee, and the entrance pass is valid for seven consecutive days.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a split between valley amenities and mountain rusticity. Private parks near Stanley and Luray typically provide full or partial hookups, bathhouses, and Wi-Fi. In-park sites are different: there are no RV hookups, though a dump and fill station with potable water is available near Big Meadows. Cell reception and Wi-Fi are limited on the ridge, with the strongest signal near the Byrd Visitor Center and Big Meadows Lodge.
Black bears are active in the park and surrounding forest, so food storage rules are strictly enforced and bear boxes are provided at campsites. Firewood restrictions also apply: to prevent the spread of invasive insects, campers should buy firewood locally or use dead and down wood gathered inside the park.
Skyline Drive is winding with a 35 mph speed limit and low overhead clearance in a few spots, so larger Class A rigs should confirm access routes before committing to an in-park campground.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Stanley, VA in winter, and how do I prepare for cold weather?
Yes, winter rentals are absolutely a thing here, and they can be magical. Stanley winters bring lows around 24°F in January with occasional snow on the Blue Ridge, so look for RVs listed as four-season or winterized with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working propane furnace. Many hosts park their rigs for the deepest cold, but several stay open year-round, especially for cozy stays at Shenandoah River State Park (open year-round with electric hookups) or for visits to Luray Caverns, which stay a steady 54°F inside. Pro tip: plan for shore power so you can run electric heaters, refill propane before your trip, and let faucets drip on sub-freezing nights to prevent frozen lines.
