Campgrounds and RV parks near Twin Lakes, VA

Twin Lakes sits in central Virginia's Piedmont, within easy reach of Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area works well as a base for RV travelers who want both mountain camping and access to Charlottesville's restaurants, wineries, and historic sites. Skyline Drive, the park's 105-mile scenic road, is roughly an hour west and provides the primary corridor to the closest national park campgrounds. RV renters have two main choices in this region: front-country campgrounds inside Shenandoah National Park, or private full-hookup parks closer to town. Lewis Mountain Campground and Loft Mountain Campground are the closest park options along southern Skyline Drive, while Big Meadows Campground offers the largest reservable footprint near the park's center. For travelers who need full hookups, dump stations, or amenities like a pool and Wi-Fi, Charlottesville KOA Holiday is the standard private-park choice within a short drive of downtown.

Shenandoah's national park campgrounds use a single booking channel. All Shenandoah campgrounds now use Recreation.gov for reservations, with booking available up to 6 months in advance on a rolling daily window. Reservations typically release at 10 AM Eastern. Rules differ by campground. Big Meadows Campground is reservation-only for all individual sites, while Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain offer a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites. Lewis Mountain Campground is first-come, first-served only, using self-registration on-site, with cashless payment via the Recreation.gov app. For fall weekends at Big Meadows Campground or Loft Mountain Campground, plan to book the morning the window opens. Charlottesville KOA Holiday reserves through the KOA site or app and typically accepts bookings well in advance, useful for holiday weekends and UVA football dates.
