Piedmont sits on the North Branch of the Potomac River in Mineral County, West Virginia, directly across from Westernport, Maryland. The town is a practical launch point for camping in the Potomac Highlands and the Allegheny plateau country of neighboring Garrett County, Maryland, where several Maryland state parks lie within a short drive north.

Big Run State Park sits at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir in Garrett County, Maryland, surrounded by the Savage River State Forest, and offers primitive family campsites available year-round. New Germany State Park lies within Savage River State Forest and features a small lake and rental cabins. Wolf Den Run State Park is the first Off Road Vehicle state park in Maryland, comprising the Huckleberry Rocks, North Hill, and Potomac River areas.
On the West Virginia side, Abrams Creek Lodge and Campground provides forested tent camping and cabins along a small whitewater stream, with a limited number of RV or pop-up sites and no hookups. Sleepy Hollow Campground rounds out the closest private options.

The Piedmont area has four distinct seasons and mountain weather that can shift quickly. Summer is peak camping season, with warm days and cool nights at elevation. Reserve early for July and August weekends.
Fall brings strong foliage across the Alleghenies and cooler nights. Autumn visitors to Big Run State Park have a view of the changing colors on the surrounding mountain ridges. Spring can be muddy and wet, with variable temperatures and lingering cold snaps at higher elevations. Wettest months tend to fall in late spring and early summer.
Winter camping is possible but requires preparation. At New Germany State Park, winter campsites and driveways are not always plowed and may be covered in snow and ice, and winter campers should be prepared to park in the day-use area and walk to their site. At Wolf Den Run, no motorized use is allowed during the annual deer firearms season, a two-week period beginning the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, though the park remains open for walk-in hunting and non-motorized use.
How to book campsites near Piedmont
Maryland's state parks north of Piedmont use a single reservation system. Sites at Big Run State Park can be reserved via parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-2267. Same-day reservations are not permitted online or by phone; campers without a reservation may sometimes pay on arrival for sites marked as available for one night only. Reservations can typically be made up to a year in advance, with a minimum of one day ahead.
At New Germany State Park, advance reservations are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome; reservations use the same Maryland state park system, with campsite check-in at 3 p.m. and check-out at 1 p.m. Wolf Den Run campground bookings use the same system, and separate reservations are required for ORV riding.
Abrams Creek Lodge and Campground and Sleepy Hollow Campground are privately operated and book directly through the properties.
What to expect
These are mostly rustic, low-hookup campgrounds. Big Run does not provide potable drinking water at individual sites, and cell service is very limited. The campground has 23 primitive family campsites available year-round: sites 63-75 are set in wooded areas with stone-dust pads, while sites 78-90 occupy an open grassy field. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring.
New Germany's campground is tighter and designed primarily for tent camping, with a few electric-only sites; roads are narrow and backing in with a large camper can be tricky. Cell reception is very limited inside the park.
RV renters should size expectations to the equipment. Abrams Creek accommodates only a small number of RV or pop-up sites with no hookups and a length limit that rules out larger rigs. Wolf Den Run offers 10 primitive campsites with a picnic table and fire ring, and portable restrooms are available at each end of the campground. Plan for self-sufficient camping and pack water, extra fuel, and offline maps.
