Campgrounds and RV parks near Abbotsford, WI

Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Dubay Shores Campground offers lake access for fishing walleye, bass, muskie, and northern pike, along with boating through the warm months. Council Grounds State Park has a beach on Lake Alexander, an accessible fishing pier, wooded trails, and a boat landing that opens onto Lake Alexander and the Wisconsin River, with paddling and kayaking popular below the Alexander Dam. On land, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail crosses Lincoln County near Merrill, and Council Grounds has short hiking trails suitable for family walks. Wedges Creek Hideaway and Spirit Falls Camping add on-site amenities aimed at families, while Otter Lake Park Campground has its own playground, fish cleaning house, and boat launch on one of the better fishing lakes in Chippewa County.

The prime RV window in central Wisconsin runs from mid-May through mid-October. Council Grounds State Park operates seasonally, opening around May 1 and running through October 31, with modern showers and flush toilets available from mid-May to mid-October and a dump station on site during the season. Most private and county campgrounds, including Otter Lake Park Campground, follow a similar spring-to-fall season and close for winter. Summer weekends and holidays fill fast. Wisconsin state park campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and popular waterfront loops at Council Grounds are often booked out months ahead for July and August. June tends to bring the wettest weather of the year and peak mosquito pressure, so early July through mid-September is the sweet spot for warm, drier conditions. Fall camping through October delivers strong hardwood color and cooler nights. Once campgrounds close in late fall, nearby snowmobile trails, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing keep the area active through winter for day visitors.

Most campgrounds in this part of Wisconsin are heavily wooded, with mature hardwoods providing good shade. Council Grounds has 52 family campsites plus a small group camping area, with 19 of the family sites offering electric hookups for RVs and the rest non-electric; each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Hookups vary by property. Private parks such as Lake Dubay Shores and Wedges Creek Hideaway typically offer 20, 30, and 50 amp electric with water and full-hookup options. Otter Lake Park Campground has 20, 30, and 50 amp electric on all sites and a fill station, but no on-site sanitary dump; campers use the dump station at Chapman Park in nearby Stanley. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the surrounding forests. Firewood rules apply statewide: only certified firewood or wood sourced within 10 miles of the park is allowed at Wisconsin state parks, and firewood is sold at or near most properties.
