RV camping near Alma, Wisconsin
Alma sits on a narrow strip of land between the Mississippi River and 500-foot limestone bluffs along Wisconsin Highway 35, the Great River Road Scenic Byway. The town is just two streets wide with stairstep streets climbing the hillside, and it is a designated National Historic District with hundreds of preserved buildings. The setting works well for RV travelers who want river access, birding, and small-town amenities within a short drive of their site.
Camping options cluster along the river within a short drive of downtown. Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina sits about three miles south of Alma along Highway 35, offering RV sites, a boat ramp, and marina services. Big River Resort, Nelson's Landing RV Park, and Drift Inn at Indian Creek round out the private options nearby. For a state-park stay, Merrick State Park lies just south toward Fountain City on the Mississippi backwaters.
Merrick has three campgrounds with 65 individual campsites plus a group tent site, with a mix of electric and non-electric loops suited to trailers and motorhomes.
Things to do near Alma
Boating, fishing, and paddling on Pool 4 of the Mississippi are the main draws. Water activities in the area include boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing, with hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing on shore. Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina has an on-site boat ramp and gas dock, and Merrick State Park has two ramps that accommodate both motorized and non-motorized craft.
In town, families can walk the steel observation bridge over the railroad tracks to watch barges lock through Lock and Dam No. 4. From December through March, wintering bald eagles congregate in the open water below the dam. The Wings Over Alma Nature and Art Center on Main Street provides spotting scopes and a viewing deck for eagle watching.
For a bluff-top view, drive up to Buena Vista Park or hike the trail from Main Street. Rieck's Lake Park north of town adds a playground and waterfowl viewing.

The private campgrounds run a Mississippi River season. Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina operates seasonally from May 1 through October 31 and closes for winter. Merrick State Park's family campgrounds follow the standard Wisconsin State Park season, with peak occupancy from Memorial Day through mid-October.
Summer is the busiest window for boating and marina activity, with warm evenings and long daylight. Fall shoulder season brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and hardwood color along the bluffs, and it is often the most comfortable time for RV travel. Spring brings migrating waterfowl and songbirds to the backwaters, along with cool, damp nights and occasional river flooding that can close low-lying loops.
Winter shifts the focus to eagle watching. From December through February, wintering bald eagles congregate around Lock and Dam No. 4 to feed and are often seen perched on ice floes. Most private campgrounds are closed in this period, so plan on day trips from indoor lodging.
How to book campsites near Alma
Merrick State Park uses the Wisconsin State Park System reservation portal at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy. Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Waterfront sites in the south loop and on the island turn over first, so set a calendar reminder for the release date.
For family campsites, advance reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and October 31 require a minimum two-night stay. A minimum three-night reservation is required on holiday weekends.
Private campgrounds around Alma, including Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina, Big River Resort, Nelson's Landing RV Park, and Drift Inn at Indian Creek, book directly through the operator by phone or website. Weekend and holiday slips fill early in summer. A Wisconsin state park vehicle admission pass is required to enter Merrick, in addition to the campsite fee.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a working river landscape. Barges move through Lock and Dam No. 4 day and night, and an active rail line runs the length of town between Highway 35 and the river. The Merrick campgrounds attract paddlers and anglers seeking lowland river scenery, though the adjacent railroad brings frequent train noise. Light sleepers should factor this in when picking a site.
The north campground at Merrick has 25 sites, 22 with electrical hookups, plus flush toilets and showers. The south campground has 35 sites, including 28 waterfront sites on Fountain City Bay. A dump station is available in the park.
Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina offers RV and tent sites, showers, a camp store, a bar and grill, and boat and pontoon rentals. Cell service in the Alma corridor is generally usable but can weaken directly under the bluffs.
