Campgrounds and RV parks near Birnamwood, WI

The area is built for outdoor activity. Embarrass River ATV Park connects directly to Shawano County ATV and UTV routes, and winter riders shift to the same corridors on snowmobiles once trails are groomed. Tilleda Falls Campground sits near a small waterfall on the South Branch of the Embarrass River, a short walk from the sites. Day trips broaden the options considerably. Dells of the Eau Claire County Park, east of Wausau, offers scenic river access, hiking, and a connection to the Ice Age Trail. Council Grounds State Park, about an hour south near Merrill, features forest and Wisconsin River views. Rib Mountain State Park adds hiking, a chairlift, and an observation tower within the same radius, and downtown Wausau provides restaurants, shops, and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.

The RV season in this part of Wisconsin is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds around Birnamwood open in late April or early May and close by mid-October, tracking the frost calendar. Wisconsin state park campgrounds run on a similar schedule, though a limited number of sites stay open through winter for cold-weather camping. July and August are the busiest weeks, with warm days, active lakes, and full family campgrounds. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill earliest and should be booked well in advance. Late May through mid-June brings fewer crowds but also active biting insects, so screen rooms and repellent matter. Fall camping from mid-September through mid-October is a strong window for RV renters: cool nights, hardwood color, and lighter demand. Winter closes most private parks entirely, though snowmobile and ATV traffic keeps the local trail system busy from December through February when snow cover holds.

Expect modest, family-oriented private parks rather than resort-style RV destinations. Wooded and semi-open sites are the norm, most with electric and water, and a mix of pull-through and back-in configurations. Larger Class A rigs should ask about site length and low tree branches when reserving, particularly at the more rustic properties. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the U.S. 45 corridor but weakens in surrounding forest pockets. Bring drinking water for backup, plan for mosquitoes and ticks from late spring through summer, and pack layers, as overnight lows drop sharply once fall sets in. Black bears are present in the region, so food should be stored inside the RV overnight. Quiet hours are enforced at most parks, and ATV or snowmobile use is limited to designated trails leaving the campground rather than internal roads.
