Campgrounds and RV parks near Buffalo City, WI

Water recreation dominates the trip. The Mississippi backwaters, Belvidere Slough, and Spring Lake are popular for fishing walleye, bass, and panfish, and multiple public landings in and near town provide boat access. Paddlers use the sheltered sloughs for calm-water kayaking and canoeing, and Merrick State Park has boat and canoe launches directly on the backwaters. On land, the Great River Road along Wisconsin Highway 35 offers a well-known drive with bluff overlooks, and the region sits on the Mississippi flyway with strong bald eagle and waterfowl viewing. Families staying at Lazy D Campground and Trail Rides can add horseback riding to the itinerary. In winter, Buffalo City is a regional draw for ice fishing on the backwater bays.

Peak camping season runs from late May through early October. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for boating and swimming, though June is typically the wettest month and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book up early at Merrick State Park and nearby private campgrounds, and Wisconsin State Parks require a three-night minimum reservation on holiday weekends. Fall, from mid-September through mid-October, is a strong shoulder season. Daytime highs sit in the 60s Fahrenheit with cool nights, hardwood color peaks along the bluffs, and campgrounds are quieter. This is also a productive fishing and birding window as waterfowl migration builds along the Mississippi flyway. Winter closes most private riverside campgrounds, while Merrick State Park remains open year round with water systems shut off in the cold months. Spring reopens in April and May with cool, wet weather and rising river levels that can temporarily affect low-lying sites and boat landings in the South Campground.

Roads into Buffalo City are paved and generally easy for larger rigs, but some private campground access roads and river-adjacent sites are tight and shaded by mature hardwoods, so confirm length and slide-out clearance when booking. Merrick State Park sits directly beside an active rail line, and train noise carries through the night; light sleepers may prefer sites farther from the tracks. Cell service in and around Buffalo City is generally usable but variable in the sloughs. Firewood cannot be brought in from outside a 10-mile radius unless it is state-certified or treated, so buy locally or on-site. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and gnats, are heaviest from June through August near backwater areas, so pack repellent and screens. A trailer dump station is available at Merrick State Park near the contact station, and most private campgrounds also offer dump service; potable water at state park sites is seasonal.
