Campgrounds and RV parks near Cecil, WI

Shawano Lake anchors most local activity. The lake supports boating, swimming, walleye and panfish angling, and a public beach at the county park, with rentals available around the shoreline. Cecil Lakeview Park in the village offers a boat landing, a handicap-accessible kayak launch, and a beach. North of Cecil, the Wolf River is one of the premier whitewater rivers in Wisconsin, flowing more than 240 miles before joining the Fox River, with a rugged 37-mile upper reach between Lily and Big Smokey Falls that features boulder gardens, rapids, and waterfalls popular for whitewater canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. During normal flows, most rapids run Class II to III with a few reaching Class IV. Outfitters on the Wolf River corridor run guided rafting and tubing trips with shuttle service. Boulder Lake, a 362-acre lake in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, offers quieter water for swimming, kayaking, and fishing for walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish, plus trout streams nearby.

The RV season around Cecil runs roughly from May through mid-October. Boulder Lake Campground in the national forest is typically open May through the third week of October, and many private lake-adjacent parks follow a similar window. Seasonal sites at private parks often fill by early spring for the full summer. Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, active lake use, and full weekend bookings, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Late spring is the best window for Wolf River whitewater, when snowmelt and spring rains lift flows; the commercial rafting season on the Wolf typically opens May 1 and runs into September. September brings cooler nights, quieter campgrounds, and fall color, with peak foliage in northern Shawano and Langlade counties typically in early to mid October. Winter shuts most campgrounds down, but the area remains active for ice fishing on Shawano and Boulder lakes and for snowmobiling on the regional trail network. Travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm water and dump-station availability, as forest-service water systems and RV dump stations are shut down at the end of September depending on weather.

Expect a mix of full-service RV parks and more rustic wooded sites. Lakeside parks near Cecil typically offer electric and water hookups, showers, dump stations, beaches, and boat launches, with a share of seasonal sites occupied for the full summer. Sites tend to be grassy and level, with mature trees providing shade. River-adjacent parks in the Wolf River corridor lean toward a rustic Northwoods feel, with private fire pits, picnic tables, and on-site or nearby rafting and tubing outfitters. Cell service can be spotty once you leave the immediate Cecil-Shawano area, and some national forest sites use vault toilets rather than flush facilities. Bring insect repellent through summer, especially after wet spells, and expect black bear country north of Cecil. Firewood should be sourced locally, since Forest Service rules prohibit moving firewood in from outside the area.
