Campgrounds and RV parks near Colby, WI

Colby sits in central Wisconsin at the border of Clark and Marathon counties, roughly halfway between Wausau and Eau Claire on Highway 29. The surrounding region is a working landscape of dairy farms, hardwood forests, and river valleys along the upper Wisconsin, Black, and Yellow river systems. RV travelers use Colby as a practical base for exploring both the Northwoods to the north and the cranberry country to the south. Campground options within an hour or two include private, family-run properties and one state park. Wedges Creek Hideaway near Greenwood combines RV and cabin sites with on-site amenities and weekend events. Craneberry Campground near Babcock is a small family-run park bordered by public hunting land, while Lake Dubay Shores Campground offers a large lakefront layout on Lake DuBay between Mosinee and Stevens Point. For a state park stay, Council Grounds State Park sits along the Wisconsin River near Merrill and provides a heavily wooded family campground. Spirit Falls Camping near Tripoli rounds out the list with a smaller footprint further north toward the Northwoods.

Council Grounds State Park uses the Wisconsin DNR reservation system. Sites can be booked online or by phone for the same day of arrival and up to 11 months before the planned occupancy date, and a reservation must be in place before setting up on any site. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required on every motor vehicle entering a state park, forest, or recreation area, and can be purchased in advance or at the park. Private campgrounds are booked directly with each property. Wedges Creek Hideaway, Craneberry Campground, Spirit Falls Camping, and Lake Dubay Shores Campground each handle their own reservations by phone or through their websites. Summer weekends, holiday weekends, and the fall gun-deer season fill first, so booking several weeks out is recommended for RV sites with hookups.
