Camping near Colfax, Wisconsin
Colfax sits in Dunn County in west-central Wisconsin, along the Red Cedar River about 25 miles east of Eau Claire. The village is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Red Cedar and Chippewa river valleys, with easy access from US 12 and Interstate 94. The surrounding area lies within the Driftless Area, a region untouched by glaciers during the last ice age, with campground elevations generally between 800 and 1,200 feet.
Options within a short drive include Twin Springs Resort Campground, Irvington Campground and RV Park, Country Villa Motel Campground, and Eagle Ridge Campground. These private parks handle most of the local RV demand and typically offer electric and water hookups, dump stations, and a mix of shaded and open sites. State-run camping is available farther out at Lake Wissota State Park near Chippewa Falls.
Day-use options in town include Felland Park, a public area along the Red Cedar River with picnic pavilions, a playground, and river access for canoes and kayaks, and the Colfax Red Cedar Preserve and Recreation Area, over 150 acres bordered by the Red Cedar River with a pond popular for fishing, bird watching, and motorless boating.
Things to do around Colfax
The Red Cedar River is the main draw. Paddlers put in at Felland Park for flatwater floats, and the Red Cedar State Trail, a rail-trail running from Menomonie south to the Chippewa River, is popular for cycling and walking. Trout and smallmouth fishing are productive along the river and in nearby ponds.
At the Colfax Red Cedar Preserve, a perimeter walking path takes hikers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers through wooded areas, riverside viewing, open grassland, and forest flood plain, with paths and an entry road that allow river access for kayakers, tubers, and canoeists.
Day trips reach Lake Wissota State Park for swimming and boating, Chippewa Falls for the Leinenkugel Brewery tour, and downtown Menomonie for shops and restaurants. Families often build a day around tubing the Red Cedar or the nearby Apple River.

Summer weekends draw the heaviest demand, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill earliest.
Spring can be wet and buggy, with black flies and mosquitoes active from late May into June, but river levels are high and good for paddling. Summer brings warm days, occasional strong thunderstorms, and the region's peak humidity. Fall shoulder season, from early September through mid-October, delivers cooler nights, fewer insects, and hardwood color across the Chippewa Valley.
Winter camping options near Colfax are limited. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers use the perimeter path at the Colfax Red Cedar Preserve when snow cover holds, but RV sites with active hookups are scarce between November and April.

Renting from Anthony was great!! He was very prompt, explained everything with the camper very thoroughly and was incredibly nice and accommodating. The camper was very clean, well-kept and in great condition! The generator is basically brand new and very easy to use; starts with the push of a button! Bathroom was clean and worked! Whenever we had a question, we received timely responses from Anthony and he was very open to help, it was never a bother. If we ever have a need for a camper again, we will ABSOLUTELY reach out to Anthony again, I highly recommend using this camper!! 5 stars for sure!!

Anthony was very helpful. He met me at the campground, set up the camper, walked me through everything, and showed me the ins and outs of his camper. I told him I wanted to leave early on the day of departure. He said no problem; just leave the key in it, and he’d pick it up later the day I left. He made the entire experience so much easier for us. Thanks a lot, buddy.

How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds around Colfax, including Twin Springs Resort Campground, Irvington Campground and RV Park, Country Villa Motel Campground, and Eagle Ridge Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weekend and holiday sites for summer often book out weeks or months in advance, so lock in dates early if traveling in July or August.
Wisconsin state park sites, including Lake Wissota near Chippewa Falls, are booked through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com, and a vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the site fee. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date, which matters for popular summer weekends. Federal campgrounds use Recreation.gov.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, small-town feel. Colfax has a grocery store, gas, hardware, and a handful of restaurants, but larger supply runs mean a drive to Menomonie or Eau Claire. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the highway corridor and thinner in river-bottom sites.
Sites at nearby private parks range from open, sunny pull-throughs to shaded wooded back-ins, so check length and slide clearance when booking a larger rig. Site separation varies across the area's campgrounds, so families wanting space between neighbors should ask about specific loops.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active through the warm months, so pack repellent and do tick checks after hikes. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving invasive pests, and quiet hours are enforced at most parks.
