Campgrounds near Gillett, Wisconsin
Gillett sits in Oconto County in northeast Wisconsin, about 20 miles northeast of Shawano and roughly 40 miles north of Green Bay. The town markets itself as the ATV Capital of the World and serves as the southern trailhead of the 89-mile Nicolet State Trail, which runs north through the Nicolet National Forest to the Michigan state line. RV travelers use the town as a jumping-off point for hundreds of miles of ATV, UTV, and snowmobile routes.
Gillett also works as a base for reaching the Wolf River and Peshtigo River corridors to the north and northwest, both known for whitewater paddling and rafting. Boulder Lake Lodge Campground and Fawn Lake Campground offer lake-oriented stays in the area, while River Forest Wolf River Camping and Peshtigo River Campground LLC put travelers on two of the region's most popular whitewater rivers. Kropp Road Camping, LLC rounds out the private-park options nearby.
Most campgrounds in this area operate seasonally, with the core RV season running from May through October. Sites range from full-hookup RV pads to rustic wooded sites, and reservation practices vary by property.
Things to do near Gillett
ATV and UTV riding is the signature activity. The Nicolet State Trail begins in Gillett and connects to a broader network of routes shared with hikers, bikers, and, in winter, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. ATV use on the trail in Oconto County is permitted from May 1 through October 31. City streets are opened for ATV access to local businesses, and free truck-and-trailer parking, showers, and restrooms are available at Zippel Park.
Water recreation drives most north-woods trips. The Wolf River offers well-known whitewater between Langlade County landings, with Class III and IV rapids in its lower reaches. The Peshtigo River holds one of the longest continuous stretches of whitewater in the Midwest, including the Roaring Rapids section popular with rafting outfitters. Boulder Lake Lodge Campground sits near 362-acre Boulder Lake in the national forest, offering swimming, fishing, and boating close by.

The primary camping season runs from early May through mid-October. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak, when waterfront and full-hookup sites fill quickly on weekends. Spring brings the highest and most reliable whitewater flows on the Peshtigo and Wolf, along with cool nights and heavy blackfly and mosquito pressure in the woods.
Summer brings warm days, generally in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, and warm-enough lake temperatures for swimming. Thunderstorms are common in June, which is typically the wettest month at the nearby Green Bay station. Late August and September are good windows for lower crowds, cooler nights, and strong fishing.
Fall color in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest usually peaks from late September into early October. Most forest-service and private campgrounds close by mid to late October, and forest-road access becomes unreliable once snow and mud arrive. Winter camping in the area is limited, though the Nicolet State Trail and its connectors become a busy snowmobile network.

Our family had a great stay in Taylor’s camper! It was clean, well equipped and he was great explaining everything to us when we arrived. We already booked it for next year!

I've rented his rv several times now and will continue to anytime im in the area. Excellent host and very clean and well equipped rv. He makes sure you know how everything works and where it is. He makes setting up and returning the rv is easy and confusion free. If you need an rv definitely look at him first except when I want to rent it of course.

How to book campgrounds near Gillett
National-forest sites in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest are booked through Recreation.gov. Boulder Lake and other popular campgrounds accept reservations up to six months in advance, and premium waterfront and electric sites for peak summer weekends should be booked as early as that window opens. Some sites at Boulder Lake and other forest campgrounds remain first-come, first-served.
Private campgrounds near Gillett, including Fawn Lake Campground, Kropp Road Camping, LLC, River Forest Wolf River Camping, and Peshtigo River Campground LLC, are booked directly with each property by phone or through their websites. Rafting-focused campgrounds along the Wolf and Peshtigo often bundle shuttle service with camping, so travelers should book the raft trip and the site together. For summer weekends and holiday weeks, plan on reserving several weeks out.
What to expect
Sites near Gillett range from developed private RV parks with water, electric, and dump stations to rustic national-forest campgrounds with vault toilets and hand-pump water. Boulder Lake offers flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and electric hookups at a subset of sites. Water systems at forest campgrounds may be shut off outside the core season, and cell coverage is uneven once travelers leave town.
Expect mixed pine and hardwood forest, small inland lakes, and cool nights that can drop into the 40s Fahrenheit even in summer. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall; bring repellent and check daily. Black bears live in the area, so store food securely and follow posted food-storage guidance. ATV and rafting traffic can make weekends lively at trail-side and river-side campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Gillett, WI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Gillett, WI?
An RV rental in Gillett, WI is one of the most affordable ways to explore Wisconsin's Northwoods. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Oconto County area typically range from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and Class A rigs sit higher. Shoulder season (May and September) usually saves 15 to 25 percent versus peak July and August. For a cheap RV rental Gillett families love, filter by travel trailers and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: booking midweek and avoiding the Oconto County Fair weekend in late August keeps nightly rates lower and campground availability open.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gillett%2C%20WisconsinDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Gillett, Wisconsin?
Great news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Gillett. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes and travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking platform, so there are no in-person paperwork hurdles. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-timers are surprised how straightforward it is, so you can focus on planning your Northwoods route instead of red tape.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/dr-lic.aspxWhat protection and roadside assistance come with my RVezy booking?
Every RVezy booking in Gillett includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the highway with confidence. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, and during checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, whether that is a weekend at Hartman Creek or a longer Nicolet National Forest loop. If you get a flat tire on Highway 32 or need a tow near Suring, one phone call connects you to help any hour. Pro tip: take photos of the RV at pickup and drop-off so any pre-existing dings are clearly documented.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Gillett RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy that includes a full money-back grace period right after booking, so you have breathing room if plans shift. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start, and special situations like severe weather or natural disasters are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Because RVezy, not the host, manages cancellations, the process is consistent across every listing in Gillett. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best Oconto County rigs, then double check your itinerary within the grace window for total peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Gillett?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Gillett trip is easy to set up. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and trailers whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many Gillett-area hosts charge a small pet fee, which keeps fur cleanup simple. Once you're on the road, dogs love the Nicolet State Recreational Trail and the shoreline trails at Machickanee Flowage. Wisconsin State Parks allow leashed pets in designated pet areas and most campsite loops, including nearby Hartman Creek State Park. Pro tip: bring a long tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination, which campground hosts occasionally ask to see at check-in.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/rulesCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Gillett?
Yes, RV delivery Gillett travelers love is widely available. Many RVezy hosts in Oconto County will drive the rig to your campground, lake cabin, or driveway, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That is a game changer if it is your first time renting an RV or you would rather skip towing on Highway 22. Popular delivery destinations include Bagley Rapids Campground in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Boulder Lake Campground, and private parks around Suring. Pro tip: message the host through the listing with your campsite number and arrival window, and ask about a stocked-and-ready setup so you can roll in and relax immediately.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/cnnf/recreation/camping-cabinsHow far can I drive on my Gillett RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most Gillett hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer Wisconsin loops. From Gillett, Green Bay is about 35 miles south, Door County's Sturgeon Bay is roughly 80 miles east, the Wisconsin Dells sit about 175 miles southwest, and Lake Superior's Apostle Islands are around 240 miles northwest. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, so it's smart to estimate your route before booking. Pro tip: if you're planning a big RV road trip from Gillett through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, filter for unlimited-mileage listings and you'll save real money on a week-long adventure.
travelwisconsin.com/article/road-trips/wisconsins-great-river-roadWhere are the best campgrounds near Gillett for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Gillett style. Top picks include Bagley Rapids Campground in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (about 20 miles north, peaceful sites along the Oconto River), Boulder Lake Campground (great swimming and fishing in the same national forest), Chute Pond Park near Mountain (lakefront sites with electric hookups), and Pine Acres Resort on Pine Lake outside of Suring. For a state park experience, Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca is roughly 65 miles southwest with full reservation services. Pro tip: book Wisconsin DNR sites through the official reservation portal up to 11 months ahead, especially for summer weekends when waterfront sites near Gillett disappear fast.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/findacampsiteWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Gillett, WI?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Gillett RV trip. June through August brings warm daytime highs in the mid-70s to low-80s Fahrenheit and cool 55 to 60 degree nights, perfect for campfires by the Oconto River. September and early October deliver brilliant Northwoods fall color through the Nicolet National Forest, with daytime highs in the 60s and far fewer mosquitoes. Winters are genuinely cold, often dipping below zero, and many campgrounds close from November through April. If you're chasing snowmobile season, some hosts offer winterized rigs with heated tanks. Pro tip: the last weekend of September is peak foliage on Highway 32, often called Wisconsin's most scenic drive.
weather.gov/grb/I'm a first-time renter, will I know how to use the RV?
You are in good hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump procedure, plus how to level and secure the rig. Many Gillett-area hosts also send you home with a printed cheat sheet or quick video links. If something stumps you at Boulder Lake at 9 p.m., you can message your host directly or call RVezy support. The roads around Gillett are forgiving for first-timers: Highway 22 and County Highway A are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked. Pro tip: before pickup, watch a short walkthrough video of your specific RV model so the systems feel familiar before you hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy rental in Gillett includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a dead battery on Highway 32, a flat tire near Suring, or a propane issue at Chute Pond gets you a real person on the phone fast. They will arrange tow, tire change, jump start, or lockout service to your exact location. Your host is also a quick message away for quirks specific to their rig. Cell coverage is generally strong on US-141 and Highway 22, though it can thin out deep in the Nicolet National Forest. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Gillett, WI?
Gillett is a fantastic launch pad. Popular RV road trip from Gillett routes include: Door County (about 80 miles east, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, for cherry orchards and Lake Michigan lighthouses), the Upper Peninsula of Michigan via US-41 (Marinette to Escanaba is about 90 miles, then on to Pictured Rocks at about 230 miles), Wisconsin Dells (175 miles southwest, around 3 hours), and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior (around 240 miles, about 4.5 hours). Crossing into Michigan is straightforward and allowed on most RVezy bookings, just confirm with your host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: loop north on Highway 32 through Mountain and Lakewood for one of the prettiest drives in the state.
travelwisconsin.com/article/road-tripsWhat should I budget for fuel on a Gillett RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable here. Wisconsin gas prices typically sit close to the national average, and diesel runs slightly higher. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined), and Class A rigs average 7 to 10 mpg. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Gillett to Door County and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Oconto Falls or Shawano before heading deep into the Nicolet National Forest, where stations are sparse and prices climb a bit.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gillett?
Earlier is better, but you've got options. Wisconsin State Parks open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Wisconsin DNR portal, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) at popular parks like Hartman Creek and Peninsula in Door County book up within hours of opening. Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest campgrounds like Bagley Rapids and Boulder Lake reserve through Recreation.gov, generally 6 months ahead. Private parks around Oconto County are usually bookable 30 to 90 days out. Pro tip: midweek availability is wide open even in July, so a Sunday-through-Thursday Gillett trip often lands you a lakefront site you couldn't dream of on a Saturday.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Gillett?
Driving an RV in and around Gillett is refreshingly low stress. Highway 22, US-141, and County Highway A are wide, flat to gently rolling, and lightly trafficked, which makes them ideal for a motorhome rental Gillett first-timers can handle confidently. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially October through December (Wisconsin's rut and hunting seasons), and be mindful of logging trucks on Highway 32. Winter brings snow, ice, and frost heaves from December through March, so most RV trips happen May through October. Pro tip: avoid the narrow bridge crossings on the small county lake roads east of Suring if you're in a Class A; stick to the state highways for stress-free travel.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Gillett?
Campgrounds around Gillett range from rustic to full-service, so you can pick your comfort level. Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest sites like Bagley Rapids offer vault toilets, potable water spigots, and fire rings, but no electric hookups, so plan to use your RV's battery and propane. Wisconsin State Parks typically include electric (20/30/50 amp), shower buildings, and dump stations. Private parks like Pine Acres Resort offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, and laundry. The closest public dump stations include Bagley Rapids and Boulder Lake. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Gillett or Oconto Falls before you head into the national forest, since spigots can be seasonal and shut off after the first hard frost.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Gillett?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most campervan rental Gillett and motorhome listings on RVezy come with a queen or full bed (plus convertible dinette or bunk beds), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower in Class B, C, and A rigs, air conditioning and furnace heat, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a generator or solar setup for off-grid nights, plus a TV and Bluetooth speakers. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in the Northwoods, but mobile hotspots work well along US-141. Pro tip: filter listings by the number of seatbelted travel seats to match your group size, especially for a family RV trip Gillett kids will remember.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/vehicles/title-plates/rv.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Gillett?
You can customize your rent an RV in Gillett experience easily. Popular add-ons from Oconto County hosts include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator use ($3 to $10 per hour beyond included hours), portable grills, bike racks, kayaks, and propane refills. Many hosts offer delivery and setup for a flat fee based on distance (often $2 to $4 per mile from their location). Pickup is typically a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at the host's home, and mileage policies usually allow 100 to 150 free miles per night with extras at $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit so you arrive at Bagley Rapids and start your trip the moment you open the door.
travelwisconsin.com/northeast/oconto-county/gillettHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental Wisconsin guests book?
Payment is simple and secure. For every RV rental Wisconsin booking on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. You typically pay a portion at booking and the balance before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming no damage, excess mileage, or missing items. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off in the host's driveway, note the fuel level and propane gauge, and you will breeze through deposit release within a few days of returning the RV.
