Campgrounds and RV parks near Loyal, WI

Water recreation drives much of the area. Russell Memorial Park, Clark County's largest campground, offers water frontage on 821-acre Lake Arbutus, ATV trail access, full RV hookups, and a wide range of modern amenities, and Lake Arbutus is touted as the best fishery in Clark County. Mead Lake is the second largest lake in Clark County, with two public boat landings, one located immediately at the campground. Trail users have strong options nearby. Levis Mound Recreational Area offers a large mountain-bike trail system, hiking trails, and scenic overlooks, and county forest lands connect directly to ATV and snowmobile routes. Rock Dam Lake adds a swimming beach and quieter paddling for families with younger kids. Off-park stops include the Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neillsville, farm markets on the way to Marshfield, and small-town suppers along Highway 98.

The core camping season in Clark County runs late spring through early fall. Campsites are available for reservation from May 1st through September 30th at eligible county campgrounds. This window aligns with the warmest, driest stretch and with full amenities like potable water, dump stations, and staffed offices. Shoulder-season travel is possible but requires planning. October through April are non-reservable months and sites are available on a first come, first serve basis where self-registration is required, and availability of camping amenities in the off-season is primarily dependent on weather and environmental factors. Snyder, Mead Lake, Russell Memorial, and Rock Dam campgrounds have heated shower buildings that may remain open through the completion of the gun deer season, which typically falls in late November. Summer brings the busiest weekends, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day. Fall color usually peaks in late September and early October, and late October cold can freeze hydrants at unstaffed sites. Winter camping is possible on county forest land with a permit but assumes self-sufficiency.

Sites in the county system are wooded and spread out, with a mix of electric and non-electric loops. Snyder, Russell Memorial, Mead Lake, and Rock Dam are the only county campgrounds with heated shower buildings, which is useful for cool spring and fall nights. Cell coverage is spotty in the deeper forest units, so download maps before leaving town. RV renters should confirm site length and hookup type at booking. Some loops fit large Class A and fifth-wheel rigs; others are tighter and better suited to Class C and travel trailers. Dump stations are standard at the modern county parks, and Loyal itself has fuel, groceries, and hardware for provisioning. Per Clark County policy, permits are non-transferable, non-refundable, and may be revoked at the county's sole discretion, so verify dates and vehicle details before you finalize.
