Campgrounds and RV parks near Merrillan, WI

The Black River State Forest anchors most outdoor plans. Two forks of the Black River diverge into 68,000 acres of forest, making it a strong base for paddling, hiking, and mountain biking. Nature trails with interpretive signs can be found at Pigeon Creek and Castle Mound campgrounds, and additional nature trails are located at the Perry Creek day use area and the East Fork campground. ATV and UTV riders use the extensive trail network in and around the forest, and anglers target the Black River and area flowages for smallmouth bass, walleye, and panfish. Winter visitors find cross-country ski and snowmobile trails within the forest. Families staying at Hixton / Alma Center KOA Holiday, Parkland Village Campgrounds, or Little Creek Family Campground often combine on-site amenities with day trips to state forest trailheads and river access points.

Peak RV season near Merrillan runs from late spring through mid-fall, when private parks are fully open and state forest sites see the heaviest demand. Summer weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day fill earliest, particularly for electric sites. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and hardwood color into October. State forest campgrounds operate on different calendars. Castle Mound is a modern family campground open year-round and has a total of 35 sites, 21 non-electric and 14 electric. East Fork is a rustic family campground open from May 1 through the Monday after the second weekend of October. Pigeon Creek is a rustic family campground open year-round with 38 non-electric sites. Winter access is limited. When conditions and staffing allow, a limited number of sites are plowed during winter at Castle Mound and Pigeon Creek campgrounds, and water systems are shut down in the cold months. RV travelers should confirm hookup availability with private parks such as Doc's Bunkhouse or Lost Falls Resort Campgrounds before booking outside the core season.

The area around Merrillan is rural and wooded. It sits near the edge of the Driftless Area, so travelers should expect sandy soils, pine ridges, and narrower forest roads near trailheads. Cell coverage varies inside the state forest. Private parks near Merrillan typically provide RV hookups, dump stations, showers, and family amenities. State forest sites lean rustic. There are picnic facilities at all three campgrounds, all with hand pumps for water, picnic tables, grills and pit toilets. Castle Mound includes an accessible shower building, accessible flush and vault toilet buildings, an indoor picnic shelter, and a sanitary dump station. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent. Firewood should be purchased locally to prevent the spread of forest pests.
