Camping near Mondovi, Wisconsin
Mondovi sits in Buffalo County in western Wisconsin, in the rolling coulee country of the Driftless Region between Eau Claire and the Mississippi River. The Buffalo River runs through town, and the Buffalo River State Trail, a rail-trail popular with cyclists, ATVs, and snowmobilers, passes just to the north. RV travelers use Mondovi as a quiet base for exploring the Mississippi River bluffs, the Trempealeau River valley, and the small towns of Alma, Durand, and Arcadia.
Campground options are a mix of village-run parks, county parks, and privately owned riverfront resorts. Crystal Lake Campground Strum, Wisconsin is the largest full-service park close by, with lakefront sites in the Village of Strum. Pietrek Park, a Trempealeau County park on the Trempealeau River between Arcadia and Independence, offers electric and electric/water sites in a rustic setting. Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina, on the Mississippi about three miles south of Alma, is the go-to for boaters. Holden Park Campground sits on Silver Birch Lake in Pepin County and suits smaller rigs looking for a quieter, more primitive stay.
Eau Claire is about a 30-minute drive north for groceries, fuel, and big-box supplies.
Things to do near Mondovi
The Buffalo River State Trail runs from Mondovi east toward Fairchild and connects to Crystal Lake Campground Strum, Wisconsin. It is graded flat and suits kids on bikes, and it is used for ATV and snowmobile riding in season. Fishing is easy to access at Crystal Lake and Silver Birch Lake, and the Trempealeau River at Pietrek Park is a slow, sandy-bottom float ideal for tubing, kayaking, and canoeing.
Along the Mississippi, Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina provides a boat launch and slip access to the main channel and backwaters. Nearby, Buena Vista Park in Alma delivers a bluff-top viewpoint over Lock and Dam No. 4, and Wings Over Alma is a good stop for eagle and tundra swan watching. Perrot State Park and Merrick State Park, both a short drive south, add hiking trails and additional river frontage.

The main camping window runs from May through October. Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina operates seasonally within that range, and Holden Park Campground is open from mid-April through November. Pietrek Park's main season runs spring through fall, with a large surge tied to the Ashley for the Arts festival in early August. Winter camping options are very limited, and municipal parks in the area typically close after early fall.
Summer, from June through August, is the peak. Weekends at Crystal Lake Campground Strum, Wisconsin and the Mississippi River sites fill quickly, particularly around the Fourth of July and for regional events such as Ashley for the Arts in Arcadia, where Pietrek Park books through a special-event reservation window months in advance. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and ticks, are heaviest in June and July.
Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV travelers who want cooler nights and open sites. Late September and October bring fall color across the bluffs and along the Buffalo and Trempealeau rivers, plus lower bug pressure. Spring can be muddy, and river levels sometimes run high after snowmelt.

Renting from Anthony was great!! He was very prompt, explained everything with the camper very thoroughly and was incredibly nice and accommodating. The camper was very clean, well-kept and in great condition! The generator is basically brand new and very easy to use; starts with the push of a button! Bathroom was clean and worked! Whenever we had a question, we received timely responses from Anthony and he was very open to help, it was never a bother. If we ever have a need for a camper again, we will ABSOLUTELY reach out to Anthony again, I highly recommend using this camper!! 5 stars for sure!!

Anthony was very helpful. He met me at the campground, set up the camper, walked me through everything, and showed me the ins and outs of his camper. I told him I wanted to leave early on the day of departure. He said no problem; just leave the key in it, and he’d pick it up later the day I left. He made the entire experience so much easier for us. Thanks a lot, buddy.

How to book campsites near Mondovi
Booking systems vary by operator. Pietrek Park uses Campspot for online reservations, with Ashley for the Arts week handled through a separate reservation window announced by Trempealeau County Parks. Crystal Lake Campground Strum, Wisconsin takes single-night through full-season reservations directly through the Village of Strum. Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina books through Campspot and by phone, and Holden Park Campground uses an online reservation system for its fourteen reservable sites, with the remainder first-come, first-served.
For summer weekends and holidays, reserve as far ahead as the operator allows. Check site length, hookup type (electric-only versus water and electric), and whether the site is back-in or pull-through before you book. Many county parks in this region do not have on-site hosts, so confirm gate hours and after-hours check-in instructions ahead of arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of tidy village campgrounds and rustic county parks rather than resort-style destinations. Crystal Lake Campground Strum, Wisconsin has 42 sites with water, electric, and cable hookups, some with sewer, plus an on-site dump station, two shower buildings, and a boat landing, and it is big-rig friendly. Pietrek Park offers 19 electric/water sites, 16 electric-only sites, three group sites, and a horse camping area, with basic amenities and river access.
Great River Harbor Campgrounds and Marina is close-quarters and social, with a bar and restaurant on site and marina slips along a natural harbor off the main Mississippi channel. Holden Park Campground is more primitive: 30-amp electric, pit toilets, and non-potable water, so arrive with fresh water tanks filled.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near towns and along Highway 10, but drops in the coulees and along stretches of the Mississippi bluffs.
