Campgrounds near Platteville, Wisconsin
Platteville sits in southwest Wisconsin's Driftless Area, a region of unglaciated hills, spring-fed streams, and Mississippi River bluffs. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette counties, with a mix of private RV parks and state park campgrounds within an hour's drive.
Closest options include Lake Joy Campground in nearby Belmont and Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park toward the Galena border, both offering full-hookup sites suited to travel trailers and motorhomes. Coconut Cove RV Resort and Palace Camp Ground round out the nearby private inventory, along with Rustic Barn RV Campground. State parks such as Governor Dodge, Yellowstone Lake, and Wyalusing lie within reasonable driving distance for campers willing to trade sewer hookups for larger natural settings.
The area draws families for its combination of quiet rural roads, historic lead-mining sites, and river access. Sites near Platteville tend to be smaller and more relaxed than destination resorts, which makes reservations easier to secure outside of holiday weekends.
Things to do near Platteville
The Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums in Platteville cover the region's lead and zinc history, with guided tours descending 90 steps into the 1845 Bevans Lead Mine and a ride on a 1931 mine locomotive when weather allows. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus and the large hillside M sit on the north edge of town.
Within a 45-minute drive, Governor Dodge State Park offers two lakes for swimming, paddling, and fishing, plus miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails. Yellowstone Lake State Park to the east has a swim beach and a stocked lake. Wyalusing State Park, at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers, delivers bluff-top views and family-friendly nature programs.
Day trips reach Dickeyville Grotto, the Mississippi River town of Potosi with its brewery, and the shops of Mineral Point.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when campgrounds are fully staffed, pools and beaches are open, and daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit. July and August are the busiest months, and weekends at state park campgrounds often book to capacity.
Late spring and early fall are strong shoulder seasons. May brings wildflowers and trout-stream openings but is also among the wettest stretches of the year, so muddy sites and thunderstorms are common. September and October bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color across the Driftless bluffs, with harvest festivals in surrounding small towns.
Most private RV parks in the Platteville area operate roughly from April or May through October. Wisconsin state park campgrounds are now 100 percent reservable year-round, though water systems at many sites are shut off until around mid-May, and cold-weather stays are limited to self-contained rigs.
How to book a campsite
Wisconsin state park campsites, including those at Governor Dodge, Yellowstone Lake, and Wyalusing, are reserved through the Wisconsin DNR system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by phone at 1-888-WI-PARKS. Sites become available on a rolling 11-month window, and popular summer weekends at Governor Dodge often fill within days of opening. A daily or annual state park vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the campsite fee, and nonresident campers pay an added per-night surcharge.
Private campgrounds near Platteville, including Lake Joy Campground, Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park, Rustic Barn RV Campground, Coconut Cove RV Resort, and Palace Camp Ground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For holiday weekends, book two to three months ahead; midweek stays in June and September are often available on shorter notice.
What to expect
Private parks around Platteville typically offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Amenities vary: expect basic bathhouses, a camp store, laundry, and often a pool or small lake. Cell coverage from major carriers is generally reliable in and around town, though it thins out in the deeper coulees and river valleys.
State park sites are larger and more wooded but usually electric-only, with dump stations rather than sewer hookups. Roads into the Driftless Area include steep grades and tight curves, so drivers of larger Class A motorhomes or long fifth wheels should plan routes carefully.
Summer evenings bring mosquitoes and gnats near water, so pack repellent. Firewood must be sourced locally to comply with Wisconsin rules aimed at slowing pest spread.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Platteville, WI?
RV rental in Platteville is one of the most affordable ways to explore southwest Wisconsin's Driftless Area. On RVezy, motorhomes near Platteville average around $200 per night, while travel trailers and towables average closer to $120 per night. To find a cheap RV rental in Platteville, book mid-week stays, look at smaller travel trailers, and consider shoulder-season dates in May or September. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book on RVezy and message a few hosts about delivery to Mound View Park, since bundled pricing often beats nightly rates on a la carte add-ons.
travelwisconsin.com/southwest/grant-county/plattevilleDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Platteville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Platteville for almost every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Wisconsin only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for recreational vehicles longer than 45 feet, and virtually no RVezy listing in Platteville comes anywhere close to that length. You'll also need to be at least 25 years old, since RVezy's minimum age to rent is 25. ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Pro tip: if it's your first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer; they drive like a large van and are perfect for Wisconsin's rolling country roads.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/com-drv-vehs/rqts-for-cdl/cdl-requirements.aspxWhat protection and roadside help is included with my Platteville RV rental?
Every RV rental in Platteville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. During checkout you (not the host) choose the protection level that fits your trip, with options ranging from basic to premium coverage for damage to the RV during your rental. If you get a flat tire on Highway 151 heading toward Galena or a battery dies at Governor Dodge State Park, one phone call gets help dispatched any hour of the day. Pro tip: review the protection options before checkout so you can match coverage to your driving comfort level and the value of the rig you choose.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Platteville RV trip?
You can book your RV rental in Platteville with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. That means there is a clear, consistent process whether you booked a campervan rental in Platteville or a larger Class A motorhome. RVezy offers a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and refunds beyond that window depend on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will refund your booking or help you rebook. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later so you lock in better rates and get the most flexibility if life shifts your plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Platteville RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Platteville. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome dogs and other pets. Platteville is a great dog town: Mound View Park & Campground allows leashed pets right in the city, and the 4.6 mile Rountree Branch Trail is perfect for morning walks. Pets are also welcome at nearby Wisconsin State Parks like Governor Dodge and Wyalusing in designated pet-friendly campsite loops and trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and pack a long lead since most Wisconsin DNR properties require pets to be on a leash no longer than eight feet.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Platteville?
Yes, RV delivery in Platteville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a motorhome. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV at Mound View Park & Campground in town, Rustic Barn Campground in nearby Cuba City, or Lake Joy Campground in Belmont. They will level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through how everything works before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check their delivery range and fee on the listing. Pro tip: if you are staying at Wyalusing or Governor Dodge State Park, ask about delivery in your initial message; many Platteville hosts already know those parks well.
platteville.org/recreation/page/mound-view-park-campgroundHow far can I travel from Platteville on a typical RV rental?
You can reach a huge range of destinations on an RV road trip from Platteville. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage on weekly trips. Popular drives include Dubuque, IA (about 25 miles), Galena, IL (about 30 miles), Wyalusing State Park (about 35 miles), Madison (about 75 miles), and Wisconsin Dells (about 95 miles). Door County is a roughly 4.5 hour drive for a longer week-long loop. Pro tip: filter listings by mileage policy and message the host with your planned route. Hosts often add bonus miles or waive overage fees when they know your itinerary up front.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Platteville%2C%20WisconsinWhere are the best campgrounds near Platteville, WI?
The best campgrounds near Platteville cover everything from full-hookup RV parks to dramatic state park bluffs over the Mississippi. Mound View Park & Campground sits right in town with 15 water and electric sites across from the high school. Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park in Cuba City (about 12 miles south) offers full hookups, level pull-throughs, and big-rig friendly sites. Lake Joy Campground in Belmont (about 10 miles) is family-favorite with a small fishing pond. Grant River Recreation Area in Potosi (about 15 miles) is a Army Corps park on the Mississippi River. Wyalusing State Park (about 35 miles) is famous for its ridge sites where the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers meet. Pro tip: book Wyalusing's ridge loops the moment your 11-month window opens.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/wyalusingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Platteville?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Platteville, with the absolute peak running from mid-June through early September when daytime highs sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid 80s. September and early October are an insider favorite: fall colors light up the Driftless Area bluffs, mosquitoes disappear, and campgrounds are noticeably quieter. Spring (April to early May) is great for trails and trout streams but can be muddy with overnight lows in the 30s. Winter RV rentals are limited because most southwest Wisconsin campgrounds close from late October through April. Pro tip: aim for the last two weeks of September for the best mix of warm days, cool sleeping weather, and the brightest fall color along the Great River Road.
weather.gov/arx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Platteville?
You'll do great, and Platteville is honestly one of the easier places in Wisconsin to learn. Roads like Highway 151, Highway 81, and Highway 80 are wide, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked compared to Madison or Milwaukee. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to the water heater, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you're nervous about driving, choose a campervan rental in Platteville or a Class C motorhome under 25 feet, or book delivery so the host parks and sets up everything for you. Pro tip: drive to the World's Largest M on Platte Mound on day one. It's a short, scenic loop that builds confidence before you tackle longer routes.
platteville.com/visitWhat if something breaks down during my Platteville RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away no matter where you are along the Mississippi River bluffs or out on a county road near Mineral Point. The service handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow needs. Your host is also a direct lifeline; they know their RV better than anyone and can usually troubleshoot quirks by phone or text. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN, plate, and tire size; it makes any service call faster.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I cross state lines on my Platteville RV rental?
Yes, crossing into Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota is not only allowed by most hosts, it's one of the best reasons to rent an RV in Wisconsin. Platteville sits at the tri-state corner, so you're 25 minutes from Dubuque, IA, 40 minutes from Galena, IL, and a couple of hours from the Twin Cities. Travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the RV's insurance coverage, so message the listing before booking if a cross-border trip is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: a classic Driftless loop is Platteville to Galena to Dubuque to McGregor, IA and back along the Great River Road; it's about 150 miles of pure river-bluff scenery.
travelwisconsin.com/regions/great-river-roadWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Platteville RV trip is straightforward once you know your rig. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon on gas, Class B campervans get 16 to 22 mpg, and pulling a travel trailer with your own truck typically nets 10 to 14 mpg. Wisconsin gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, with stations in Platteville, Lancaster, and Dubuque, IA, often the cheapest in the region. For a typical 300 mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Dubuque, IA before crossing back into Wisconsin; Iowa fuel taxes are usually lower, and the savings add up on a longer RV road trip from Platteville.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Platteville?
For summer weekends at Wisconsin State Parks like Governor Dodge, Wyalusing, and Nelson Dewey, book the moment the 11-month rolling reservation window opens through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system at wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com. Ridge and lakeside sites can disappear within hours for July and August. Mound View Park & Campground in Platteville is much easier to grab and is often available a few weeks out. Private parks like Rustic Barn and Lake Joy typically open 6 to 12 months in advance. Pro tip: if your dream site is taken, set up a cancellation alert; cancellations are common, especially in the two weeks before arrival.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/camping/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Platteville?
Driving an RV around Platteville is genuinely pleasant. You're in the Driftless Area, so expect rolling hills, sweeping curves, and short steep grades rather than mountain passes. Main routes like US-151, WI-81, and WI-11 are smooth four-lane or wide two-lane roads. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially on rural stretches between Platteville and Lancaster, and slow down for farm equipment in spring and fall. Winter can bring snow, ice, and sub-zero windchills from December through March, which is why most rental hosts pause bookings in those months. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly. Pro tip: download the Wisconsin 511 app before your trip for real-time road conditions, construction alerts, and live cameras along your route.

Mound View Park & Campground in Platteville has water and electric at all 15 sites with a shared restroom and shower facility. Pro tip: Wisconsin DNR water systems shut off roughly October 1 to May 15, so if you're shoulder-season camping, plan to arrive with full fresh tanks and dump before you leave.

Many motorhome rentals in Platteville also include a generator for off-grid power, exterior speakers, and an awning. Wi-Fi varies by host and cell signal in southwest Wisconsin can be patchy near river bluffs, so confirm with the host before booking if you need to work on the road. Pro tip: check the listing's full amenities list and ask about bedding, kitchen kits, and outdoor chairs. Many hosts include these for free, while others charge a small add-on fee.

Mileage policies vary; some listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others offer weekly RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book rather than adding them later. Hosts often discount packages (like delivery + setup + propane), and you'll lock in a known total instead of nickel-and-diming on the road.
platteville.com/visitHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Platteville RV rental happens securely right through the RVezy platform. You will see the full breakdown at checkout, including nightly rate, service fee, taxes, your chosen protection package, and any host add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip starts and is released after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned on time and in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior, and report any pre-existing scratches or dings in the RVezy app. Pro tip: keep gas and dump station receipts; they make any post-trip discussion fast and easy.
