Campgrounds near Spencer, Wisconsin
Spencer sits in central Wisconsin's Marathon County, roughly halfway between Marshfield and Wausau along US Highway 10. The village is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Central Wisconsin lakes region, the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir, and the wooded county forests west of the Wisconsin River.
Campground options within easy driving range mix private RV parks with county and state facilities. Wedges Creek Hideaway and Craneberry Campground offer small, wooded private sites, while Aprin Cranberry Campground caters to travelers looking for a rural setting near the region's cranberry marshes. Lake Dubay Shores Campground provides waterfront sites on Lake Dubay, a flowage of the Wisconsin River popular for boating and fishing. Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park offers a simple highway-adjacent stopover for shorter stays.
Beyond these private options, Marathon County operates public campgrounds at Big Eau Pleine Park, and the Wisconsin DNR manages reservable sites at nearby state parks and forests, giving travelers a full range of hookup levels, from full-service pull-throughs to rustic tent-friendly loops.
Things to do around Spencer
Water recreation anchors most trips. Lake Dubay Shores Campground sits on the Wisconsin River flowage, with boat launches, walleye and musky fishing, and open water for tubing and paddling. The Big Eau Pleine Reservoir, a short drive southeast, adds a large flowage and a peninsula park with twelve miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
Day trips extend the options. Rib Mountain State Park near Wausau offers hiking trails, an observation tower, and views from one of Wisconsin's tallest peaks. Cranberry country to the west, near Warrens and Wisconsin Rapids, runs self-guided marsh tours in fall. Families also visit downtown Wausau for the riverfront, splash pads, and Marathon Park's playgrounds.

Most campgrounds around Spencer run a seasonal calendar. Marathon County campgrounds, including those at Big Eau Pleine Park, typically operate from early May through the end of October, and most private parks in the area follow a similar window. Off-season travelers should confirm hookups, water availability, and gate access directly with each campground before arrival.
July and August are the peak booking months. Weekends fill quickly at waterfront sites on Lake Dubay and the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day often sell out months ahead. Late spring and early fall bring lighter crowds, cooler nights, and fewer biting insects, with September adding foliage color across the hardwood forests.
Winter camping is limited. Most private RV parks close, though the Wisconsin State Park System offers year-round reservations at a subset of properties for cold-weather campers with self-contained rigs.
How to book campgrounds near Spencer
Private campgrounds near Spencer, including Wedges Creek Hideaway, Craneberry Campground, Aprin Cranberry Campground, Lake Dubay Shores Campground, and Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Waterfront and full-hookup sites go first, so book several months ahead for summer weekends.
For public sites, Marathon County campgrounds use the county's online reservation portal through the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry department. Wisconsin State Park System sites, including those at Rib Mountain and Council Grounds, can be booked up to 11 months before the arrival date, either online through the DNR reservation system or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for each vehicle at state properties.
What to expect at Spencer campgrounds
Site layouts vary widely. Private parks in the Spencer area generally offer level gravel or grass pads with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus a fire ring and picnic table. County parks like Big Eau Pleine mix electric and non-electric sites, with vault restrooms and water pumps rather than full bathhouses, and no showers on site.
Cell coverage is workable along US 10 and near Wausau but drops in wooded areas closer to the reservoirs. Firewood must be sourced locally: Marathon County parks require firewood purchased on site, and Wisconsin state properties restrict outside wood to certified dealers or wood from within 10 miles of the park. Bring insect repellent from late May through July, and expect cool overnight temperatures even in midsummer, especially near water.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Spencer, WI
How much does an RV rental in Spencer cost, and when is it cheapest?
Good news: an RV rental in Spencer is often more affordable than what you'd pay in big metro markets. Travel trailers in central Wisconsin typically run around $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes land between $200 and $325 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes range from $275 to $450 per night. The peak window is mid-June through Labor Day, when Marathon County dairy country and lake season are in full swing. For a cheap RV rental in Spencer, target May, late September, or early October when nightly rates drop and the foliage along Highway 13 turns brilliant gold. Booking three to four weeks ahead and choosing a travel trailer with delivery built in is the single best way to stretch your budget.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marathon-county/spencerDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Spencer, Wisconsin?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Spencer, Wisconsin. The state of Wisconsin does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, no matter the size. You'll just need to be 25 or older and pass RVezy's quick ID verification through the platform when you book. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward Wisconsin's rules are, leaving you free to focus on the fun stuff like planning your route up Highway 29 toward Wausau.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/lic-classes.aspxWhat protection is included with my Spencer RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Spencer through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into the booking. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you serious peace of mind on those rural Marathon County backroads. During checkout, you (not the host) choose the protection level that fits your trip, with multiple tiers available from standard to premium coverage. Pair that with around-the-clock roadside help, and your Spencer RV trip is set up to be relaxing from the start.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Spencer RV rental?
Booking is low-risk, so you can plan with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace period right after booking so you're never locked in the moment you click confirm. Depending on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, different refund tiers apply. You won't see different cancellation rules on each listing because it's a single, consistent RVezy policy. The full details live in the RVezy Help Center, but the short version is: lock in your dates for that fall color trip up to Rib Mountain now, and you've got flexibility built in if life shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Spencer?
Absolutely, and Wisconsin is a fantastic place to travel with a dog. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Spencer, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and browse listings where the host welcomes pets. Marathon County is dog-loving: leashed dogs are allowed on non-groomed County Forest trails, and nearby Council Grounds State Park in Merrill and Rib Mountain State Park in Wausau both permit leashed pets on most trails and in designated pet-friendly campsites. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm pet fees and share your dog's size and breed, then plan a stop at Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area for a long, leashed walk after a day on the road.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Spencer?
Yes, and RV delivery in Spencer is one of the best perks for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at places like Council Grounds State Park, Lake Wissota State Park, or a private RV park near Marshfield, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing through small-town Highway 13 traffic and no nervous backing-in moments your first time out. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's home base. Filter for delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your destination address to get an exact quote. It's the smoothest way to start your Spencer RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive, and what's the mileage policy?
You've got room to roam. Most Spencer hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and many listings also offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Wisconsin loop. From Spencer you're about 35 miles to Wausau, 30 miles to Marshfield, 90 miles to Eau Claire, 145 miles to the Wisconsin Dells, and around 185 miles to Door County's ferry docks. Additional miles beyond the included allowance typically cost $0.30 to $0.45 each, set by the host on the listing page. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop up to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands (roughly 200 miles north), filter specifically for unlimited-mileage rigs to keep the budget predictable.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marathon-county/spencerWhere are the best campgrounds near Spencer, WI?
You're surrounded by great options for RV camping near Spencer. Top picks include Big Eau Pleine County Park, a Marathon County favorite on a large reservoir with electric sites, Council Grounds State Park in Merrill (about an hour north with shaded sites along the Wisconsin River), Lake Wissota State Park outside Chippewa Falls, and Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca. For RV camping in Spencer itself, several private parks and farm stays sit within a short drive. Reserve Wisconsin State Park sites through the Wisconsin DNR up to 11 months ahead, especially for summer weekends when the prime electric sites at Council Grounds book out fast.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/findaparkWhen is the best time to visit Spencer for an RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Spencer RV trip, with the real peak running mid-June to late August when daytime highs typically sit in the high 70s to low 80s. September brings cooler nights (40s to 60s) and the Marathon County hardwoods light up in red and gold by early October. Winters are genuinely cold here, with January lows often dipping below 0 degrees F and significant snowfall, so most rentals run May through October. Local insider tip: aim for mid-September when central Wisconsin's small-town fall festivals are in full swing and campground rates have already started to drop.
weather.gov/grb/Are Spencer RVs ready for cold-weather and shoulder-season trips?
Yes, many central Wisconsin hosts equip their rigs for the shoulder seasons so your trip stays cozy. Listings often include propane furnaces, heated holding tanks, and 30/50-amp shore power hookups so you can stay warm even when overnight temps dip into the 30s in late September or early October. For trips after mid-October, message the host directly to confirm winterization status and whether the water system is usable. Pro tip: bring extra propane (Spencer's Kwik Trip and the Marshfield-area Farm & Fleet are easy refill stops), pack layered bedding, and choose a campground with electric hookups like Council Grounds State Park so the furnace can run all night without draining the house battery.
weather.gov/grb/I've never rented an RV before. How does pickup and orientation work?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands in Spencer. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, awning, and dump valves. You'll leave knowing exactly which buttons matter and which to ignore. Most walkthroughs run 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts encourage you to take photos or video as you go. You can also message the host before booking with any questions, so you arrive informed. Pro tip: ask your host for their favorite local launch route. Most will steer you toward the quiet county highways around Stratford and Marshfield to build confidence before tackling busier Highway 29.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marathon-county/spencerWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
Help is one phone call away, day or night. Every Spencer RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering common road-trip issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If anything pops up between Spencer and, say, the Apostle Islands, you call the roadside number, and a local Wisconsin service provider is dispatched to your location. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip for anything else, from a confusing propane regulator to a quick host question. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN during your walkthrough so any service call moves fast.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/road/default.aspxWhat are the best RV road trips from Spencer, WI?
Spencer is a perfect launchpad for a Wisconsin RV road trip. A classic route heads about 35 miles east to Wausau and Rib Mountain State Park, then north to Council Grounds State Park in Merrill and on into the Northwoods. Another favorite runs roughly 90 miles southwest to Eau Claire's breweries and the Chippewa River, then loops back through Black River Falls. For a bucket-list week, drive about 220 miles north to Bayfield to catch the Madeline Island ferry and explore the Apostle Islands. Cross-border travel into Minnesota is generally fine on RVezy rentals, but always confirm any out-of-state route with your host before booking so you're aligned on mileage and insurance coverage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Budgeting is straightforward in central Wisconsin. Class C motorhomes around Spencer average 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 mpg, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically delivers 10 to 14 mpg. Gas prices in Marathon County usually sit a few cents below the national average, with Kwik Trip stations in Spencer, Marshfield, and Wausau among the most reliable (and cheapest) places to fill up. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: download the Kwik Trip app for a small per-gallon discount and use Highway 29 east toward Wausau, which has multiple truck-friendly stations spaced for easy RV pull-throughs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Spencer?
The earlier the better, especially for Wisconsin State Parks. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) opens reservations 11 months in advance through its online system, and the prime electric sites at Council Grounds State Park, Rib Mountain State Park, and Hartman Creek State Park can be claimed the day that window opens for summer weekends. County parks like Big Eau Pleine open reservations through the Marathon County Parks system. Private RV parks near Spencer often have more last-minute flexibility. Pro tip: if you're aiming for a July 4 trip, set a calendar reminder for early August of the previous year, and have a second-choice park ready in case your first pick is taken.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Spencer?
Driving around Spencer is refreshingly relaxed for RV travel. The area sits on gently rolling farmland in northern Marathon County, and the main routes (Highway 13 north-south and Highway 29 east-west) are wide, well-maintained four-lane corridors built for trucks and farm equipment. Watch for occasional slow-moving farm tractors during planting and harvest seasons (May and September/October) and deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, which is why most rentals run May through October. Pro tip: avoid Highway 29 between Wausau and Green Bay during deer-hunting opening weekend in late November when traffic spikes, and use the Wisconsin 511 system to check conditions before you roll.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Spencer?
Wisconsin's campgrounds are well-equipped for RVs. State parks like Council Grounds and Rib Mountain offer 20/30/50-amp electric sites, potable water fill stations, dump stations, vault and flush toilets, and hot showers in the summer season. Private parks such as Lake Arbutus Pines and many Marathon County options add full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. The Wisconsin State Park System has dump stations at nearly every developed campground, included with your nightly fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you leave Spencer if your rig has a big tank, and keep a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp-to-50-amp adapter on board so you're ready for any site type the DNR throws at you.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat's included inside a typical Spencer RV rental?
You'll be surprised how turnkey these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Spencer comes with a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, basic cookware and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a queen or king bed plus convertible dinettes, roof and dash air conditioning, a propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most include a TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor camp chairs, leveling blocks, and a starter sewer hose. Generators are standard on Class A and Class C motorhomes; travel trailers rely on shore power. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm anything you specifically need, like a coffee maker, baby gear, or a bike rack for the Mountain-Bay State Trail.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marathon-county/spencerWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Spencer make customization easy. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator-hour packages, bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, and outdoor grills, all listed transparently on each listing page. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Spencer, with delivery available for an extra fee based on miles to your campground. Mileage policies vary (100 to 150 free miles per night is typical, with some unlimited-mileage rigs available). Pet fees, if applicable, are listed up front. Pro tip: build your add-on list when you first message the host so they can prep everything before your walkthrough. It saves 15 to 20 minutes on pickup day and gets you to the campsite faster.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marathon-county/spencerHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and fully handled inside RVezy. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, no cash or e-transfers with the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card (separate from your booking payment), and it's released after your trip wraps up cleanly. You'll never need to hand the host a check at pickup. To avoid any deposit hiccups, take date-stamped photos of the exterior, interior, and tanks at both pickup and drop-off, return the RV at the agreed fuel and propane level, and follow the cleaning expectations on the listing. Pro tip: do your final walk-around together with the host so any small questions are settled on the spot.
