Camping near Tainter Lake, Wisconsin
Tainter Lake is a reservoir on the Red Cedar River in north central Dunn County, Wisconsin, created by a hydroelectric dam at Cedar Falls about three miles downstream. The lake covers roughly 1,605 acres with a maximum depth of 37 feet, and its fishery includes panfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. A narrow channel splits the reservoir into North and South Tainter, with the shallower northern basin generally more productive for anglers thanks to planted fish cribs.
RV travelers use Tainter Lake as a quiet base within easy reach of Menomonie, Eau Claire, and the Red Cedar State Trail. Small lakeside resorts such as Twin Springs Resort Campground and Six Lakes Resort and RV Park sit close to the shoreline, while Irvington Campground and RV Park is positioned along the Red Cedar Trail corridor. Country Villa Motel Campground offers a nearby roadside option for shorter stops.
Five public boat launches serve Tainter Lake itself, so trailered boats and paddlecraft are simple to bring along.
Things to do around Tainter Lake
Fishing and boating drive most trips. North Tainter is favored for its fish cribs and shallow water, while the deeper southern basin is better for open-water cruising. Angling pressure is high, and the lake is a popular destination for both open-water and ice fishing. Algae blooms can reduce water clarity in August, so anglers often shift to shaded structure or nearby rivers late in summer.
Off the water, the Red Cedar State Trail runs 14.5 miles from Menomonie south through Irvington, Downsville, and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area on a crushed-limestone surface suited to family biking. At its southern end, the trail crosses the Chippewa River on a converted railroad trestle and links to the Chippewa River State Trail. Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area, just northeast of Menomonie, adds hiking through wooded hills, wetlands, and prairie.

Camping around Tainter Lake is a warm-season activity. Most private resorts follow a mid-spring to mid-fall pattern, and Wisconsin State Park properties in the region typically run their standard campgrounds from around May through October, with camping seasons varying by property.
Summer is the busiest stretch. June is the wettest month, averaging well over 100 mm of rain across roughly a dozen rainy days, but it also brings the warmest lake temperatures and the longest daylight hours. July and August offer the most reliable swimming and boating conditions, though algae blooms can affect water clarity in late summer.
Spring brings variable weather and cold water, with walleye running up the Red Cedar and Hay rivers to spawn. Fall is quieter, with cool nights and strong color along the Red Cedar Valley. Winters are subzero cold and snowy, most campgrounds close, and activity shifts to ice fishing and groomed cross-country skiing on segments of the Red Cedar State Trail between Menomonie and Downsville.

Renting from Anthony was great!! He was very prompt, explained everything with the camper very thoroughly and was incredibly nice and accommodating. The camper was very clean, well-kept and in great condition! The generator is basically brand new and very easy to use; starts with the push of a button! Bathroom was clean and worked! Whenever we had a question, we received timely responses from Anthony and he was very open to help, it was never a bother. If we ever have a need for a camper again, we will ABSOLUTELY reach out to Anthony again, I highly recommend using this camper!! 5 stars for sure!!

Anthony was very helpful. He met me at the campground, set up the camper, walked me through everything, and showed me the ins and outs of his camper. I told him I wanted to leave early on the day of departure. He said no problem; just leave the key in it, and he’d pick it up later the day I left. He made the entire experience so much easier for us. Thanks a lot, buddy.

How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds near Tainter Lake, including Twin Springs Resort Campground, Irvington Campground and RV Park, Six Lakes Resort and RV Park, and Country Villa Motel Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Lakeside and trail-adjacent sites move fastest for summer weekends, so booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is reasonable for peak dates.
For nearby Wisconsin State Park System properties, camping reservations are required and can be made on the same day of arrival or up to 11 months before the planned occupancy date, online at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. All standard sites at state parks, southern forests, and state recreation areas are reservable, with no first-come, first-served standard sites. A vehicle admission pass is required to enter state park properties, and nonresident campers pay an added nightly fee.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of small lakeside resorts and private RV parks rather than a single large campground. Sites near Tainter Lake tend to be modest in size with 30 and 50 amp electric on many pads; some parks offer full hookups, dump stations, and an on-site boat landing, while others rely on nearby public launches.
Cell coverage can be spotty on rural shorelines and along parts of the Red Cedar State Trail, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is a good idea. Only certified firewood or firewood from within 10 miles of a state park property is allowed inside Wisconsin State Park campgrounds, a rule aimed at slowing invasive pests.
Tainter Lake water clarity is classified as low by the Wisconsin DNR, and blue-green algae blooms are common in late summer due to heavy phosphorus loading from the agricultural watershed. Boaters should clean, drain, and dry gear between waterbodies.

Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (especially during November rut), and slow down for the occasional Amish horse-and-buggy in the Town of Tainter. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Pro tip: in a large Class A, stick to the wider state highways rather than the narrowest county roads near Cedar Falls Dam for an easier approach to the lake.

It's all handled securely through the platform, no cash or side deals. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip if there's no damage, excess mileage, or extra cleaning needed. Hosts can't ask for cash deposits outside the platform. Pro tip: do a slow video walkaround of the RV at pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to keep your full deposit refunded fast after your Tainter Lake adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat cold-weather features should I look for if I rent in shoulder season at Tainter Lake?
Smart question, Wisconsin shoulder season can cool off fast. For trips in late April, May, late September, or October at Tainter Lake, look for an RV with a propane furnace, enclosed and heated holding tanks, heated mattress pads or thicker insulation, and shore-power compatibility so you can plug in at sites with 30-amp electric like those at Lake Wissota State Park. Night lows can drop into the 30s°F in October. Most RVezy hosts winterize their units by November, but a handful keep four-season rigs available year-round, just message and ask. Pro tip: October at Tainter Lake means stunning red and gold reflections on the water and near-empty campgrounds, a true insider season for an RV camping Tainter Lake escape.
