Camping near Thorp, Wisconsin
Thorp sits in northern Clark County along US-29, roughly midway between Eau Claire and Wausau. The surrounding area is a mix of dairy farmland, hardwood forest, and small lakes, with the Chippewa River corridor a short drive north. RV renters use Thorp as a base for lake fishing, ATV trails, and paddling on the Chippewa and Fisher rivers.
Campground options run from small family-run parks to a Wisconsin state park. Wedges Creek Hideaway near Greenwood offers RV sites in a rural farm setting, and Little Creek Family Campground caters to families with cabins and seasonal sites. Split Ridge Campground is another privately run option in the area.
For public land, Otter Lake Park Campground is a Chippewa County park set within Chippewa County Forest on a well-known fishing lake, and Brunet Island State Park, about 45 minutes north near Cornell, is centered on a 169-acre island in the Chippewa River, with additional acreage on the east bank, and includes two family campgrounds on the Chippewa and Fisher rivers.
Things to do near Thorp
Water recreation is the main draw. Brunet Island sits at the confluence of the Chippewa and Fisher rivers, with quiet lagoons and channels that are excellent for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and wildlife watching. The park links to the Old Abe State Trail, which runs from Cornell to Chippewa Falls and is popular with cyclists staying at either the North or South Campground.
Anglers head to Otter Lake, which holds panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. A swimming beach, picnic area, and boat launch sit at the county park, and the campground has its own playground and fish cleaning house.
For family activity on rainy days or between hikes, Little Creek Family Campground has cabins and playground amenities, and Split Ridge Campground and Wedges Creek Hideaway offer quieter, rural stays with fire rings and open space.

Camping season in this part of Wisconsin is short and concentrated. Most private parks operate from late spring through mid-fall, and state park campgrounds open on a staggered schedule. At Brunet Island State Park, the South Campground is open from mid-April through November, while the North Campground typically operates during the warm-weather months.
Summer, from mid-June through August, is peak season. Weekends and holidays fill early at Brunet Island and at family parks like Little Creek, so reservations well in advance are the norm. Biting insects peak in June, and lakes generally warm enough for swimming by July.
Fall brings cool nights, low bug pressure, and hardwood color through late September and early October. Weekday sites are often open at short notice. Winter closes most campgrounds; roads and pit toilets stay accessible at some day-use areas, but full-service RV camping is not available in the Thorp area during the deep cold months.
How to book campsites near Thorp
Wisconsin state park sites are booked through the state's online reservation system. Camping reservations can be made for the same day of your arrival or up to 11 months before your planned occupancy date, online or by phone. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicles brought into the property, in addition to the site fee.
Chippewa County parks, including Otter Lake, use a separate county reservation portal operated by Chippewa County Facilities and Parks, with sites booked online or by phone. Private parks such as Wedges Creek Hideaway, Little Creek Family Campground, and Split Ridge Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
For summer weekends, book state park sites the day the 11-month window opens, and use the reservation system's availability alerts if a target weekend is already full.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean rustic. South Campground at Brunet Island offers 24 electric sites, including an accessible campsite and shower building with flush toilets, while North Campground has 45 non-electric sites, many along the scenic shoreline of the Chippewa River or its bays. Length limits vary by loop, so RV renters with longer rigs should confirm the specific site before booking.
At county and private parks, expect gravel or grass pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. At Otter Lake, 20-30-50 amp electricity is installed on all sites, and the campground has a fill station but no sanitary dump; campers use the sanitary dump station at Chapman Park in Stanley.
Cell reception at the Otter Lake campground is very limited, and an emergency phone is available near the entrance. Plan for spotty coverage across much of rural Clark and Chippewa counties.
