San Diego’s coastal region features a collection of beach towns, sandy shorelines, rocky bluffs, and salty coves. San Diego owns the title of California’s second-largest city, but the open spaces and outdoor venues help make the city’s urban areas feel equally welcoming and inviting. It doesn’t matter what area of the city you hope to visit because, with a camper rental in San Diego, it’s possible to collect just as many memories as seashells.
San Diego’s 70 miles of shoreline from Imperial Beach to Harbor Beach attract sunseekers and water lovers and help people create unforgettable seaside camping experiences. There isn’t a bad time of year to visit San Diego, but if you prefer warmer temperatures, the best time to visit is between April and October, when average highs typically hover between 70 and 80 degrees.
What kind of camping experiences do you hope to have with your San Diego RV rental? Will you take the kids to places like SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, and Safari Park, or do you hope to have a more relaxing trip to places like Torrey Pines State Reserve for whale watching and hiking?

To find the best RV parks in San Diego, you’ll need to head towards the coast. Campland on the Bay has waterfront RV sites with views of Mission Bay. This family-friendly campground features a playground, activities for kids, equipment rentals, and a skateboard park. Sites have a picnic table and a fire pit and options for dry camping and partial or full hookups. Campland on the Bay is within walking distance from Sea World and next to the Mission Bay bike path.
Silver Strand State Beach Campground faces the Pacific Ocean and the San Diego Bay and permits campers who have self-contained trailers, vans, and motorhomes. Campsites have 30-amp electrical hookups and water and a dump station for registered campers. There isn’t a more premiere beach camping location near fishing, paddling, surfing, and biking. The Bayshore Bikeway and public transportation options will help you get to where you want to go without having to move your RV during your stay.
For a full-service campground with upgraded amenities near the water, book a stay at Chula Vista RV Resort. The resort is across the San Diego Bay from Silver Strand State Beach and near bike trails and water activities. The resort has back-in and pull-through sites with several hookup options and on-site amenities to make every guest comfortable. Bayside Park and the Chula Vista Marina are adjacent to the campground, making it easy to enjoy the beach, fish, exercise, or rent a boat.

Break out the binoculars and surfboards! When you visit San Diego’s beaches, you can do more than sit in the sand. Are you a bird watcher, photographer, or animal lover? Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has spectacular wildlife viewing. During the winter months, look for migrating gray whales from the high points along the bluffs. It’s possible to observe seals, dolphins, sea lions, and some of the 200 species of birds who inhabit the area year-round. To get your feet wet or surf, visit Torrey Pines State Beach, a few miles north of the reserve. Camping isn’t permitted at Torrey Pines, but vehicles larger than a standard-size car may park at the north parking lot.
Would you rather have a guaranteed view of sea life? Take the family to Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This public center supports ocean conservation efforts. The aquarium features a wide variety of sea life, including cold and tropical water fish, and offers fun activities for the whole family. To avoid searching for limited on-site parking, leave your RV at the campground.
People who like to peddle will want to check out San Diego’s Bayshore Bikeway, a 24-mile bike path that passes through some of the city’s most visited places. Two favorite San Diego RV campgrounds, Silver Strand State Beach Campground and Chula Vista RV Resort, are located along the bike route. Getting where you want to go on a bike couldn’t be easier! The Bayshore Bikeway runs past restaurants, bars, shopping, and points of interest like the Coronado Ferry, Hotel Del Coronado, and downtown San Diego.
Families who like outdoor shopping won’t want to miss Seaport Village. Seaport Village is known for its small galleries, specialty stores, restaurants, and free entertainment from artists and street performers. Across from the village at the Embarcadero, the statue, Embracing Peace, welcomes people to the decommissioned aircraft carrier, USS Midway Museum. The 25-foot statue recreates the photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in times square to celebrate the end of World War II. To learn about life on board a ship during wartime, visit the interactive and family-friendly museum. Both Seaport Village and the Embarcadero are within walking distance to the train depot and trolley station.
