2025 East to West Travel Trailer
My family and I just returned from an unforgettable RV trip. We rented Randy & Kim's travel trailer and had it delivered to the Fort Custer Recreation Area near Kalamazoo, MI. The RV was literally brand new, very clean, well-maintained, and had everything we needed. We really appreciated the spacious living area, kitchen, comfortable beds, outdoor awning and most of all - Kim's and Randy's hospitality. They made sure that we were always taken care of,- starting with proper & prompt communication, having the travel trailer set up & ready to walk into to a detailed walkthrough and ensuring that everything worked as it should. I highly recommend Randy & Kim! You can't find better hosts!!

When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Paw Paw, MI?

Late May through mid-October is prime RV season in Paw Paw, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s and crisp fall nights perfect for campfires. September is the local sweet spot: the Paw Paw Wine and Harvest Festival takes over downtown, vineyards at St. Julian and Warner are in full harvest swing, and the crowds at Lake Michigan beaches thin out. July and August are warmest for swimming at Van Buren State Park, while early October brings stunning grape-country color. Winters are cold and snowy (lows in the teens), so most campgrounds close November through April. Pro tip: book your festival-weekend RV by June; the best rigs go fast for that first weekend in September.

Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin are all within an easy day's drive, and many hosts welcome trips throughout the U.S. Canada crossings via the Port Huron or Detroit/Windsor bridges (about 3-4 hours east) may also be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so confirm with the host before booking. What kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how do I budget for gas?

Plan on roughly 8-10 mpg for a Class A motorhome, 10-14 mpg for Class C, and 15-20 mpg for a campervan or a truck towing a travel trailer. Gas in Paw Paw and across southwest Michigan typically runs close to the state average, with stations clustered along M-40 and the I-94 exits in town. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through wine country and Lake Michigan, budget around $80-$150 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: top off in Paw Paw before heading north toward Sleeping Bear, prices tend to climb the further you get from the I-94 corridor.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Paw Paw?

For Michigan state parks like Van Buren, the reservation window opens six months in advance through MIDNRReservations.com, and the most coveted summer weekends fill within minutes of opening. For private parks like Covert/South Haven KOA or Hidden Ponds RV Resort, 2-3 months ahead is usually safe outside of holiday weekends. Wine and Harvest Festival weekend (early September) and Fourth of July fill earliest, so plan those by spring. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target Friday and log into MIDNRReservations.com at 8 a.m. sharp, and have a backup site picked out for the best campgrounds near Paw Paw.

I-94 is the main artery west to South Haven and east to Kalamazoo and is comfortable for any motorhome. Watch for lake-effect snow squalls November through March if you're winter-renting, and deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads around Lake Cora and Maple Lake. Pro tip: when parking downtown near St. Julian or Warner Vineyards, use the public lot off Kalamazoo Street; it has the easiest pull-through access for longer rigs.

Paw Paw River Campground has electric/water sites plus a propane refill and dump station on-site. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway if you're heading to a state park, and dump on your way out at the campground's free station rather than searching for one mid-route.
