At Machesis Lake Provincial Recreational Area, two docks on the lake are used for fishing and lake views, eight equine sites include horse pens, hitching posts, and manure bins, and sandy wagon trails provide good footing for horses. Fort Vermilion Provincial Recreational Area sits on the north shore of the Peace River and is a rest stop for travellers exploring the far north, with northern bird species among the draws. Town stops in Fort Vermilion and La Crete add fuel, groceries, and Peace River viewpoints to a trip itinerary.

The camping season in Mackenzie County is short. Machesis Lake Provincial Recreational Area operates from May 1 to September 30 under a lease to Mackenzie County, with the overnight campground open from mid-May to September 30. Twin Lakes Provincial Recreational Area follows a similar mid-May to mid-October window in most years. Outside of those dates, access roads may not be cleared, water is shut off, and gates are typically closed. July is the peak month for both temperature and visitation, and it is also the wettest month of the year in the region. Long daylight hours stretch past 10 p.m. through June and early July, which is a draw for families travelling with children. Mosquitoes and black flies are heaviest from late May into early July, so screened shelters and repellent are worth packing. September brings cool nights, fewer bugs, and a chance of seeing the aurora on clear evenings, but overnight frosts can begin by mid-month. Wildfire smoke from boreal fires is a known summer risk in the Peace Country and can affect air quality on short notice.

Expect rustic, boreal-forest camping rather than full-service resorts. Sites are generally unserviced or power-only, with vault toilets, fire pits, and hand pumps or non-potable water. At Twin Lakes Provincial Recreational Area, water is not available on site, so campers are asked to bring their own. Cell coverage drops off quickly outside of High Level, Fort Vermilion, and La Crete, and the closest full-service grocery and fuel stops are in those towns. Wild bison sightings are possible in the area. Black bears are present throughout the boreal forest, so food storage in the RV and clean fire pits matter. Roads into the recreation areas are gravel for the final stretch and can be soft after heavy rain, which is worth checking before towing a large fifth wheel in.
