Camping near Chatham, Ontario
Chatham sits in the heart of Chatham-Kent in southwestern Ontario, roughly midway between Windsor and London along Highway 401. The city gives RV travellers quick access to two very different shorelines: Lake St. Clair to the northwest and Lake Erie to the south. That geography shapes the camping options in the region, with lakefront private parks, a large Ontario Parks property, and quieter marina-based sites all within roughly a 45-minute drive.
Mitchells Bay Marine Park Ltd sits on the northeast shore of Lake St. Clair and combines a marina with tent, RV, and cabin sites. South of the city, Rondeau Provincial Park anchors camping on Lake Erie, with Rondeau Shores Park and Wildwood By The Lake nearby in the Morpeth area. Campers Cove Campground lies further west along the Lake Erie shore near Wheatley.
Expect flat terrain, working farmland, and Carolinian forest patches. The region is known for fishing, birdwatching, and long sand beaches rather than rugged wilderness.
Things to do around Chatham
Rondeau Provincial Park is the anchor attraction. It protects the largest area of Carolinian forest in Canada, features a long Lake Erie sand beach and a large marsh, and is a recognized Important Bird Area with nesting prothonotary warblers and other rare species. Trails such as Tulip Tree Trail are short and family friendly, and the park has a dedicated dog beach.
Lake St. Clair, reached from Mitchells Bay Marine Park Ltd, is a well-known sport fishing area, with walleye, bass, and perch drawing regular tournaments. Boating, swimming, and playgrounds round out the marina experience.
Beyond the campgrounds, day trips include Point Pelee National Park, Colasanti's Tropical Gardens, Jack Miner's Bird Sanctuary, and the wineries of Essex County, all within about an hour of Chatham.

The camping season in the Chatham area is short and defined. Rondeau Provincial Park's campground opens the first Friday in April and closes the last Sunday in October. Most private parks in the region operate on a similar window: Mitchells Bay Marine Park Ltd runs from spring into October, Campers Cove Campground opens in early May and closes in October, and Wildwood By The Lake operates on a seasonal basis.
May is the marquee month for birders. Thousands of birdwatchers head to Rondeau each spring for the songbird migration, when warblers, orioles, tanagers, and shorebirds pass through in large numbers. The Festival of Flight draws visitors from across the country. Fall brings a second, quieter migration wave and colour through the Carolinian forest.
July and August are peak family season, with warm Lake Erie beach water and the busiest weekends. Winter closes almost all campgrounds; snow, ice, and lake-effect weather make RV camping impractical.

Booking and reservations
Rondeau Provincial Park is booked through the Ontario Parks reservation system, either online at OntarioParks.com or by phone at 1-888-ONT-PARK. Reservations open up to five months in advance of the arrival date, with the booking window rolling forward daily starting at 7 a.m. ET. Daily vehicle permits can be purchased up to five days ahead.
Private campgrounds in the area are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Campers Cove Campground, Rondeau Shores Park, Wildwood By The Lake, and Mitchells Bay Marine Park Ltd all handle their own reservations and set their own deposit, minimum-stay, and holiday-weekend rules.
For the May bird migration weekends and any long weekend from Victoria Day through Labour Day, book as early as the window allows. Sites at Rondeau routinely fill within days of opening.
What to expect on site
Rondeau's campground occupies the north end of the peninsula, laid out on parallel roads named after trees. Sites range from tent-only to large trailer pads, and some offer electrical hook-up. Water taps, comfort stations, and laundry facilities are close by, and the sand beach is a short drive from the campground loop.
Private parks in the area lean toward full-service RV camping. Campers Cove Campground has 324 shaded sites with 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, municipal water, pull-thrus, rental cabins, four playgrounds, a store, and a 1,200-foot Lake Erie beach. Wildwood By The Lake is a lease-based lakefront community with a limited number of rental options.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across Chatham-Kent. Bugs peak in late spring, and campers should not bring outside firewood into Rondeau or Campers Cove because of emerald ash borer restrictions.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatham%2C%20OntarioWhat kind of driver's licence do I need to rent an RV in Chatham?

Class G covers vehicle and trailer combinations up to 11,000 kg, which includes nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform. Visiting from the U.S.? Your home-state licence works in Ontario. Visiting from overseas? Pair your licence with an International Driving Permit, available for about $25 from your local auto association. Booking your Chatham RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation. There is a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional flexibility depending on how far out from your trip you are. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. The exact terms are explained clearly during checkout so you know what to expect before you confirm. Pro tip: if your plans firm up around a Lake Erie fishing weekend or the Festival of Flight near Rondeau Provincial Park, book early to lock in the best rigs in Chatham, knowing the RVezy cancellation policy gives you flexibility if life changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Chatham?
Yes, your dog is welcome on the trip. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Chatham, and you can filter for Pet-Friendly listings directly on RVezy to see only rigs that welcome four-legged guests. Once you've got the RV, Chatham-Kent is a fantastic dog destination: Rondeau Provincial Park allows leashed pets on most trails and even has a designated pet beach along Lake Erie, while Wheatley Provincial Park and the trails along the Thames River in downtown Chatham are equally dog-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any cleaning details or breed notes, and pack a tie-out and extra water bowl for those warm summer afternoons by the lake.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rondeauCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Chatham-Kent?
Yes, and RV delivery in Chatham is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts will tow a trailer or drop off a motorhome directly at your campsite, lakeside cottage, or driveway, then level it, hook up the utilities, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Rondeau Provincial Park (about 35 km south of Chatham), Wheatley Provincial Park on Lake Erie, and Mitchell's Bay Marine Park on Lake St. Clair. Pro tip: use the Delivery filter when searching, then ask the host for a delivery quote to your exact campground. It's the perfect setup if it's your first time renting an RV.
chatham-kent.ca/visitck/stayandeat/placestostay/Pages/cabins-cottages-and-camping.aspxHow far can I drive on a Chatham RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got lots of room to roam. Chatham sits right on Highway 401, putting Toronto about 290 km (3 hours) northeast, Niagara Falls roughly 365 km east, Windsor and the Detroit border just 80 km west, and Point Pelee National Park about 70 km south. Mileage policies are set by each host, so you'll see options ranging from generous daily allowances (often 200 to 400 km per day) to RV rental with unlimited mileage on some listings, which is ideal for longer Ontario road trips. Pro tip: estimate your route's total kilometres before booking, then filter or message hosts for unlimited-mileage rigs if you're planning a Toronto-and-back loop or a Lake Erie shoreline tour.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rvWhere are the best campgrounds near Chatham, ON?
You're spoiled for choice within an hour's drive. The best campgrounds near Chatham include Rondeau Provincial Park (about 35 km south), with 262 sites tucked into one of Canada's last Carolinian forests right on Lake Erie; Wheatley Provincial Park (45 km southwest), with 210 sites and quick access to Lake Erie beaches and fishing; Mitchell's Bay Marine Park (30 km west on Lake St. Clair), offering 108 sites with boat launches; Campers Cove Campground in Wheatley, a family-friendly resort with pools and activities; and Blue Water Shiloh Park in Wallaceburg, a year-round park along the Snye River. Pro tip: book electrical sites early because they fill fast on summer weekends.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rondeauWhen is the best time of year to go RV camping in Chatham?
Chatham-Kent's sweet spot for RV camping runs from late April through mid-October, with July and August delivering warm Lake Erie swimming weather (highs around 27 to 29°C). May is magical for birders thanks to the Festival of Flight at Rondeau and migration peak at Point Pelee, while September brings quieter campgrounds, mild days in the low 20s°C, and Carolinian forest colour. Winters are cold (averages around -4°C in January with lake-effect snow possible), so most provincial parks close their RV loops by late October. Pro tip: shoulder-season RV camping in Chatham means lower nightly rates, no crowds, and the best birding in eastern Canada — the smart-money move for first-timers.
weather.gc.ca/en/location/index.html?coords=42.434%2C-82.129I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I get help figuring everything out?
Yes, and first time renting an RV in Chatham is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at your delivery location), covering how to drive, level, hook up water and power, dump the tanks, run the fridge and furnace, and use any awnings or slide-outs. You can also message the host with questions before you book. Chatham's flat farmland and the straight, well-maintained Highway 401 make for very forgiving first-time driving conditions, with none of the mountains or narrow passes you'd find elsewhere. Pro tip: take a 15-minute practice loop around a quiet country road in Chatham-Kent before heading out — confidence comes fast.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rvWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Chatham trip?
You won't be stranded. Every RV rental in Chatham booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one call away whether you are parked at Rondeau, exploring Lake St. Clair, or rolling east on the 401 toward London. Roadside support covers issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows to a qualified repair shop. Your host is also your first call for questions about anything specific to their RV. Pro tip: before you leave Chatham, save both the RVezy support number and your host's number, and snap a photo of the RV's plate and unit details to share quickly if you need help.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Chatham RV rental across the border into the U.S.?
Yes, cross-border road trips are popular from Chatham because the Detroit-Windsor crossing is just 80 km west via Highway 401, and Sarnia's Blue Water Bridge to Port Huron, Michigan is about 100 km north. Many hosts allow U.S. travel, but it depends on their listing terms and insurance, so confirm by messaging the host directly from the listing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a Chatham RV trip pairs beautifully with a Michigan loop, think Detroit's riverfront, then up to Port Huron's Lake Huron beaches. Bring passports for everyone and confirmation of the host's permission in writing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Chatham?
Fuel is easy to budget for in southwestern Ontario. Travel trailers towed by a pickup truck typically average 14 to 18 L/100 km (about 13 to 17 mpg), Class C motorhomes burn around 18 to 22 L/100 km, and larger Class A rigs sit closer to 25 L/100 km. Gas in Chatham-Kent generally tracks Ontario averages (recently around $1.50 to $1.70 CAD per litre). For a typical 500 km Chatham RV trip to Niagara Falls and back, plan roughly $150 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the highway stations near Tilbury or Ridgetown along the 401 where prices are often lower than smaller Chatham-Kent stations, and travel under 100 km/h to stretch every tank.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rvHow far ahead should I book campgrounds near Chatham?
For Ontario provincial parks like Rondeau and Wheatley, you can reserve up to five months in advance through reservations.OntarioParks.ca or by calling 1-888-ONT-PARK, and summer weekends in July and August often book the moment the window opens. Private campgrounds like Campers Cove or Mitchell's Bay Marine Park usually take reservations 6 to 12 months ahead. For shoulder-season visits in May, June, or September, you can often find sites just 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: pair your Chatham RV rental with a Tuesday-to-Thursday provincial park stay to enjoy the same Lake Erie beaches at half the booking stress, and set up cancellation alerts if you're aiming for a sold-out summer weekend.
ontarioparks.ca/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Chatham for an RV?
Chatham is one of the friendliest places in Ontario to drive an RV. The terrain is famously flat farmland, Highway 401 runs straight through town with wide lanes and full-service rest stops at Tilbury and Dutton, and there are no mountain grades or hairpin turns to worry about. Watch for crosswinds along open stretches near Lake St. Clair, occasional farm-equipment traffic on rural roads like Talbot Trail, and winter lake-effect snow squalls from December through February. Pro tip: avoid driving downtown Chatham streets like King Street with tall Class A rigs because of older overpasses; instead use the Richmond Street / Highway 40 bypass and you'll have a smooth route to your campground.
ontario.ca/page/ontario-511-road-conditionsWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Chatham?
Campgrounds in Chatham-Kent are well-equipped for a comfortable RV camping trip. Most provincial parks like Rondeau and Wheatley offer electrical hookups (15/30 amp) on a majority of sites, potable water fill stations, dump stations included with your stay, flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry. Private parks such as Campers Cove and Mitchell's Bay Marine Park often add 50-amp service, full hookups (water/sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, swimming pools, and boat launches. Pro tip: water spigots at Ontario Parks aren't meant for direct hose hookup, so fill your fresh tank at the designated trailer fill station on arrival. Pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter just in case.
ontarioparks.ca/reservations/rulesWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Chatham?
Most motorhome and campervan rentals in Chatham come fully equipped so you can move in and go. Expect comfortable beds (sleeping 2 to 8 depending on size), a working kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; furnace and air conditioning; and seatbelts for every passenger. Larger Class A and C motorhomes often add a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and slide-outs for extra living space. Wi-Fi varies by host, since rural Chatham-Kent cell coverage can be patchy near Rondeau Bay. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list and add-ons (camp chairs, bedding, BBQ, bike racks) and message the host for anything you'd like included for your family RV trip in Chatham.
chatham-kent.ca/visitck/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options are available when I rent an RV in Chatham?
Hosts in Chatham offer plenty of ways to customize your motorhome rental. Common add-ons include bedding and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, BBQs, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and pet packages, each with a clear fee shown on the listing. Pickup is typically at the host's address in Chatham-Kent, but many also offer RV delivery to nearby campgrounds like Rondeau, Wheatley, or Mitchell's Bay for a flat fee. Mileage policies range from set daily kilometre limits to unlimited mileage on select rigs. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a propane-included add-on for your first booking, and you'll arrive to a fully ready campsite, perfect for first-timers tackling their first Chatham RV trip.
chatham-kent.ca/visitck/Pages/default.aspxHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Chatham RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Chatham through RVezy, you pay online through the platform, so there are no cash exchanges with the host. The total includes the nightly rate, any chosen add-ons, the protection plan fee, and applicable taxes. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 CAD depending on the RV) is handled separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before the trip starts, then released after a smooth return with no damage. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, save it to your phone, and you'll sail through deposit release. Return the RV with the same fuel level the host noted to avoid extra charges.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Chatham?
An RV road trip from Chatham puts some of Ontario's best scenery within easy reach. Top routes include Point Pelee National Park (about 70 km south, 1 hour) for birding and the southernmost tip of mainland Canada; Niagara Falls (365 km east, about 4 hours) for the iconic falls and wine-country campgrounds; Toronto and the GTA (290 km northeast, 3 hours) for big-city sights with RV-friendly suburban parks; Pinery Provincial Park on Lake Huron (160 km north, 2 hours) for sand dunes and dark skies; and Sarnia plus the Blue Water Bridge crossing into Michigan (95 km north). Pro tip: loop the Lake Erie shoreline along the Talbot Trail east of Chatham for a quiet, scenic alternative to the 401.
