The camping season in Essex County generally runs from spring through mid-October, matching the pattern of surrounding Lake Erie parks. Spring brings cool nights, migrating birds at Point Pelee, and the first weekend surges around Victoria Day. Water temperatures remain cold well into May. Summer is the busiest window. Campgrounds around the western Lake Erie basin can see crowded conditions and a lively atmosphere on summer weekends, making mid-week or shoulder-season visits preferable for quieter stays. Full-service sites at the closest private parks often fill weeks ahead for July and August, and Canadian statutory holidays draw heavy demand. Fall offers warm days, cooler nights, and harvest activity at area wineries, with foliage peaking in October. South Bass Island State Park Campground across the lake operates roughly from spring through mid-October and requires reservations from May onward. Winter camping options in the immediate area are limited, as most private parks and public campgrounds close after Thanksgiving weekend.

Private RV parks in the Colchester and Amherstburg area typically offer 30-amp or 30/50-amp hydro, water, and either sewer hookups or on-site dump stations. Amenities commonly include pools, playgrounds, laundry, and Wi-Fi in the office area. Many parks along Lake Erie are heavily seasonal, so weekday atmospheres tend to be quiet and family-oriented. South Bass Island State Park offers a mix of full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites, with flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, a camp store, and a picnic table and fire ring at each site. Access is by ferry from Port Clinton or Catawba. Cell coverage along the Lake Erie shore is generally reliable. Firewood is often sold on-site, and Ontario restricts moving firewood between regions to limit invasive pests.
