Campgrounds and RV parks near Harley, ON

Lake Temiskaming is the centre of activity. Sutton Bay Park sits directly on the lake and offers swimming, paddling, and shoreline fishing, and there is a pool at the front of the campground and a beach further back, with bathrooms, showers, laundry room and a corner store on site. Boat launches and small marinas are common along the shoreline in and around Temiskaming Shores. Hiking is the other main draw. Devil's Rock, on the west shore of Lake Temiskaming south of New Liskeard, is the region's signature trail, with cliffs dropping straight to the water and long views across the lake into Quebec. For rainy days, New Liskeard and Haileybury offer grocery stores, restaurants, and small museums, and the Cobalt Mining Museum is a short drive south along Highway 11B.

The camping season in this part of Northeastern Ontario is short and clearly defined. Most privately run campgrounds in the region open after the spring thaw in late April or early May and close before hard freeze-up in October, following the same pattern each year. July and August are peak months, with the warmest lake temperatures, the longest daylight, and the busiest weekends. Sutton Bay Park is home of Countryfest, a country music festival held in summer that draws large crowds, so book well ahead if the trip overlaps with that weekend. Late June and early September are quieter, with cooler nights but fewer bugs and easier reservations. Spring brings black flies and mosquitoes, plus muddy trail conditions on backcountry paths. Bug pressure typically eases by late July. Fall colour peaks in late September and early October, but overnight temperatures drop quickly after that and many private campgrounds shut off water lines. Winter is not a practical RV season in this area, with deep snow, sub-zero temperatures, and closed facilities.

Expect a mix of seasonal trailers and overnight sites. Sutton Bay Park has both many seasonal sites and overnight sites, with the two areas kept separate, and water and electricity are provided at every site. Amenities on site include water, toilets, showers, dump station, laundry, internet, pool, and playground. Interior roads are gravel but well maintained, and big rigs can navigate the loops. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Temiskaming Shores but thins out on backroads and along the more remote stretches of the lake. Groceries, fuel, and propane are easiest to top up in New Liskeard before heading to the campground. Black bears live throughout the region, so store food inside the RV and keep sites clean. Bring bug spray from May through July, and pack layers, since evenings on the lake stay cool even in mid-summer.
