Campgrounds near St. Johns, Arizona
St. Johns sits on the Little Colorado River in Apache County, at roughly 5,700 feet on the high plateau north of the White Mountains. The town works well as an RV base for eastern Arizona: the surrounding country is open grassland and juniper, and Petrified Forest National Park lies about an hour north while the pine forests of the Apache-Sitgreaves rise to the south. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests elevations range from about 3,500 feet on the Clifton Ranger District to over 11,000 feet on the Mount Baldy Wilderness, and include a large part of the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains.
In-town and nearby RV options are compact and practical. St Johns RV Resort and The Gateway RV Park handle overnight and extended stays close to Highway 191, while Gristmill Farms RV Park and White Mountain RV give access to the greener country toward Eagar and Springerville.
The headline public-land site is Lyman Lake State Park, about 11 miles south of town. Created as an irrigation reservoir by damming the Little Colorado River, the park encompasses the shoreline of a 1,500-acre reservoir at an elevation near 6,000 feet.
Things to do near St. Johns
Water recreation centers on Lyman Lake. It is one of the few bodies of water in northeastern Arizona with no size restrictions on boats, and the west end is buoyed off as a no-wake area at 5 mph. The reservoir is large enough for waterskiing, jet skiing and powerboating, and anglers cast for walleye, channel catfish and largemouth bass.
On land, the state park has trails that reach ancient rock art. The Peninsula Petroglyph Trail passes about 200 rock art carvings along a couple of miles of connected loop trails, and Buffalo Trail and Pointe Overlook Trail add more exploration. Guided seasonal tours run to Rattlesnake Point Pueblo, an Ancestral Pueblo site dating to the 1300s.
South of St. Johns, the White Mountains open up higher-elevation fishing, hiking and cool-summer camping around Big Lake, Greer and the Mount Baldy area.

St. Johns sits at high elevation on a semi-arid plateau, and seasons feel sharper than in Arizona's low desert. The area has a cold semi-arid climate with strong seasonal temperature contrasts: summers are hot while winters are cold due to the inland, high-elevation setting.
Spring and fall are the workhorse RV seasons. Days are mild, nights are cold, and the country is quiet. The best time to visit Lyman Lake State Park tends to be spring and fall, when the weather is mild; summer months can be hot, so come prepared with plenty of water and sun protection, and winters are cold with some facilities reduced. Summer brings warm days on the water and the North American Monsoon, which often produces afternoon thunderstorms from late June through August.
Higher-elevation Forest Service campgrounds in the White Mountains follow a shorter season tied to snow. Opening and closing dates at Apache-Sitgreaves campgrounds are weather permitting. Winter travelers should expect snow, cold nights and reduced services around St. Johns and in the mountains to the south.
How to book campgrounds near St. Johns
Lyman Lake State Park is run by Arizona State Parks. Campsites can be reserved online or by calling the Arizona State Parks Reservations Desk at 1-877-MY PARKS (697-2757), available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arizona time. The park has 56 campsites, with 38 hookup sites (13 including sewer) and 18 non-hookup sites, and there is no limit on maximum RV length.
For Forest Service sites in the Apache-Sitgreaves, book through Recreation.gov. Advanced reservations can be made online or by calling 877-444-6777; individual campsite reservations can be made six months in advance, at least four days ahead of time, and group campground reservations can be made one year in advance.
Private parks in town, including St Johns RV Resort, The Gateway RV Park, Gristmill Farms RV Park and White Mountain RV, take reservations directly. Book summer weekends and holidays early.
What to expect on the ground
St. Johns is a small ranching town with basic services: fuel, groceries, a hardware store and a handful of restaurants. Cell service is generally reliable in town and along Highway 191, and thinner in the backcountry south and east.
Lyman Lake is exposed high-desert country. Lakeside ramadas provide shade in an otherwise open area dotted with juniper scrub. The park offers showers, restrooms and a park store, and a dump station is available on site.
Expect wildlife, wind and elevation. The park area provides winter habitat for Rocky Mountain elk, bald and golden eagles, and mule deer, and other birds include osprey, egrets, sandhill cranes and mountain bluebirds. Higher-elevation Forest Service sites in the White Mountains can sit at 8,000 to 9,100 feet, so plan for cool nights, afternoon storms in summer, and bear-aware food storage.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near St. Johns, AZ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in St. Johns?
RV rental in St. Johns is affordable because you book directly from local hosts on RVezy rather than a national chain. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes can reach $300 or more. Booking midweek and in the shoulder seasons (April to May or September to October) is the best way to find a cheap RV rental in St. Johns. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings near the 85936 zip code and message hosts about weekly discounts. Many local owners offer 10 to 20 percent off stays of five nights or more, which makes a Lyman Lake getaway very budget friendly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=St.%20Johns%2C%20ArizonaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in St. Johns?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in St. Johns, AZ, even for a 30 foot Class C motorhome or a fifth wheel. Arizona does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in. With that in hand, you're cleared to cruise US-191 toward Lyman Lake the moment you land.
azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/driver-license-information/driver-license-classes-types-and-restrictionsWhat protection is included with my RVezy booking in St. Johns?
Every RV rental in St. Johns booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward Petrified Forest on US-180 feeling fully covered. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind without buying a separate policy. During checkout you (not the host) select your preferred coverage level, so you decide how much extra cushion you want. It is purpose built for peer-to-peer RV rentals and handled entirely through RVezy, which means one app, one support team, and one less thing to worry about on your high country adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my St. Johns trip plans change?
Booking your St. Johns RV trip is low risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets and manages the cancellation policy across the platform. Policies are based on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if plans change. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you can rebook another rig. You will see the relevant cancellation terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early for the September Apache County Fair weekend, because RVs in St. Johns sell out quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a St. Johns RV trip?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in St. Johns is easy to find. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts in the 85936 area who welcome dogs, often for a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, the area is very dog friendly. Lyman Lake State Park allows leashed pets in the campground and on park trails, and Petrified Forest National Park is one of the few national parks that allows leashed dogs on all maintained trails. High desert evenings cool off nicely, so even summer walks are comfortable for paws. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask about a pickup spot that makes loading the dog easy.
nps.gov/pefo/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in St. Johns?
Yes, RV delivery in St. Johns is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress free. Many hosts will tow, park, and fully set up the RV at Lyman Lake State Park, St. Johns RV Resort, or even a private property within Apache County. They'll level it, connect water, sewer, and 30/50 amp shore power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, with some offering flat rates within a 20 mile radius. This is gold for first time renting an RV, because you skip towing, backing in, and hookup stress entirely. Filter listings by Delivery, then message the host with your campground name and dates to confirm.
azstateparks.com/lyman-lake/camping-and-cabins/rv-tent-campingHow far can I travel on an RV trip from St. Johns?
St. Johns is a phenomenal launch pad for a Southwest RV road trip. From here you can reach Petrified Forest National Park in about 50 miles via US-180 (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes), Springerville and the White Mountains in 29 miles south on US-191, Sunrise Park Resort in about 55 miles, Show Low in 60 miles, and Canyon de Chelly National Monument in around 140 miles to the north. Albuquerque sits about 200 miles east, making St. Johns the literal scenic shortcut between Phoenix and New Mexico. Each host sets their own mileage policy: many offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list rentals with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: message the host with your full route so they can quote a flat add-on for the extra miles.
nps.gov/pefo/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near St. Johns to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in St. Johns. The top picks: Lyman Lake State Park (11 miles south on US-191) offers 38 hookup sites with full sewer options, hot showers, and lake views with no boat size restrictions. St. Johns RV Resort on West 7th Street South has 146 full hookup sites with 20/30/50 amp service and a dog park. Concho Lake, about 15 miles west, is great for quiet fishing nights. For longer trips, Casa Malpais Campground in Springerville (about 25 miles south) and Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area near Show Low make excellent overnight stops. Pro tip: Lyman Lake books fast for summer weekends, so reserve through Arizona State Parks as soon as your dates are set.
azstateparks.com/lyman-lakeWhen is the best time of year to visit St. Johns in an RV?
St. Johns sits near 5,700 feet, so it has a true four-season climate that is very different from the Phoenix desert. The sweet spots for an RV trip are late April through May and September through mid-October, when daytime highs run a comfortable 65 to 80 F and nights cool to the 40s, ideal for campfires under Apache County's dark skies. June is the warmest month, with highs near the upper 80s, while July and August bring the North American Monsoon, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms followed by clear sunsets. Winters are short but cold, with January lows in the 20s and modest annual snowfall. Sunny days are plentiful year-round, so you can plan a St. Johns RV trip in almost any season.
weather.gov/fgz/Can I rent an RV in St. Johns in winter?
Yes, and winter is one of the best kept secrets for RV rental Arizona travelers. St. Johns averages only 8 inches of snow per year, the days stay sunny, and you can chase powder at Sunrise Park Resort (about 55 miles south) by day, then return to a warm motorhome rental in St. Johns by night. Look for listings that mention heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a working furnace (most Class C motorhomes and four-season trailers on RVezy have all three). Plug into 30/50 amp shore power at St. Johns RV Resort to run the heater all night without draining batteries. Pro tip: ask your host to include a heated water hose, because overnight lows can dip into the teens in January.
weather.gov/fgz/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in St. Johns?
You're going to love this: St. Johns is one of the most forgiving places in the country to learn. Traffic is light, US-191 and US-180 are wide, well-paved two-lanes with generous shoulders, and the terrain is rolling high desert without the white-knuckle mountain passes you'd hit near Flagstaff or Sedona. Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup: driving tips, leveling, slides, propane, dump station basics, and a Q&A until you feel ready. Many also offer delivery so you never have to drive the rig at all. RVezy's 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away if anything feels off. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop on the wide streets of West 7th South before pointing toward Lyman Lake.
azdot.gov/adot-news/safe-driving-tipsWhat happens if something breaks down during my St. Johns RV trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-180 or a dead battery at Lyman Lake is a phone call, not a vacation ender. Help can be dispatched to your location, whether you are at Petrified Forest, on the Coronado Trail south of Springerville, or boondocking on Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest land. Your host is also a great resource and usually responds within minutes through the RVezy app, since they know their rig inside and out. Pro tip: snap a photo of the nearest mile marker when you call, because cell service can be spotty between St. Johns and the New Mexico border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my St. Johns RV rental into New Mexico or other states?
Yes, cross-state RV trips from St. Johns are allowed and encouraged. You are only about 18 miles from the New Mexico border, and popular routes include Gallup (about 100 miles northeast via US-191 and I-40), Albuquerque (about 200 miles east), and Santa Fe (about 260 miles). Many guests do a loop through Petrified Forest, El Morro National Monument, and Zuni Pueblo. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across the border. Confirm your full route with your host before booking so they can confirm mileage allowance and any state-specific notes. Pro tip: fuel up in St. Johns before heading east, since prices often climb in smaller New Mexico towns.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I expect?
Realistic fuel planning makes any St. Johns RV trip smoother. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon on gas, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, campervan rentals in St. Johns (Class B) often hit 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer lands around 10 to 14 MPG. Arizona gas prices in the St. Johns area typically sit a bit above the national average because of the rural location, so top off in town before heading to Petrified Forest or the White Mountains. Budget for one full tank per 200 to 300 miles in a motorhome. Pro tip: the Maverik and Circle K stations on Commerce Drive are the most reliable for diesel and big-rig friendly pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near St. Johns?
For Lyman Lake State Park, book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, because sites fill quickly. Reservations are available through the Arizona State Parks system at azstateparks.com, and a small non-refundable reservation fee applies per site. St. Johns RV Resort and Concho Lake sites are usually easier to grab, often with availability a week or two out. For shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October), 4 to 8 weeks ahead is generally enough. Pro tip: if Lyman Lake is full, check for cancellations the Monday before your trip, because no-shows free up lakeside spots more often than you would expect.
azstateparks.com/reserveWhat are local driving conditions like around St. Johns?
Driving around St. Johns is genuinely relaxing compared to most Arizona destinations. US-191 and US-180 are wide, well-maintained two-lane highways with sweeping high desert views and very little traffic. The elevation is 5,700 feet, so summer never gets brutally hot, but afternoon monsoon thunderstorms in July and August can drop visibility fast (pull over for 15 to 20 minutes and they usually pass). Winter brings occasional snow and ice, especially on the climb south toward Springerville and Alpine, so check Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) road conditions on az511.gov before heading out. Crosswinds along the open plains east of town can push high-profile rigs, so ease off the throttle if gusts pick up. Otherwise, this is some of the most stress-free RV driving in the state.
az511.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near St. Johns?
You'll find a great mix. Lyman Lake State Park has 38 hookup sites (13 with full sewer), hot showers, flush restrooms, a dump station, potable water fill, a small ranger store with firewood and fishing supplies, and lakeside ramadas for shade. St. Johns RV Resort offers 146 full hookup sites with 20/30/50 amp electric, laundry, Wi-Fi, a dog park, and a $5 dump fee for non-guests if you need it mid-trip. Most national forest campgrounds in nearby Apache-Sitgreaves are dry (no hookups), perfect for a self-contained rig. Pro tip: top off fresh water at Lyman Lake's fill station before heading into dispersed camping on forest service land, where there are no services for miles.
azstateparks.com/lyman-lake/camping-and-cabins/rv-tent-campingWhat features come standard in St. Johns RV rentals?
Most RVs you'll book in St. Johns come fully equipped for true four-season high desert camping. Expect a queen bed, convertible dinette or bunks (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with three-burner stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and a wet or dry bath with hot water. Air conditioning, a propane furnace, and a TV are standard in most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers. Many also include an onboard generator (handy for boondocking near Concho Lake), solar panels, outdoor speakers, and outdoor showers. Seatbelts are required for all passengers riding while moving, and most rigs have 4 to 6. Pro tip: ask your host whether the rig has a Wi-Fi booster or Starlink, because cell coverage gets patchy once you leave St. Johns city limits.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my St. Johns RV rental?
This is where peer-to-peer really shines. Hosts in St. Johns commonly offer add-ons like camp chairs and outdoor mats (often free), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks (perfect for Lyman Lake), portable fire pits, generators, and Starlink Wi-Fi. Delivery and setup typically runs $2 to $4 per mile or a flat fee within 20 miles of town. Mileage policies vary by host: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles charged at $0.25 to $0.45 each, and some offer unlimited mileage on local trips. Pickup is usually at the host's home in St. Johns or at Lyman Lake. Pro tip: bundle bedding, camp chairs, and a kayak into one message before booking to negotiate a package rate.
azstateparks.com/lyman-lake/things-to-doHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy in St. Johns?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy. You pay your rental total (nightly rate, taxes, add-ons, and the renter protection plan you select) by credit card on the platform, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held by RVezy, not the host, and is typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV. It is released back to your card after your trip ends and the rig passes a quick post-trip inspection. To avoid deposit issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your booking requires it. Pro tip: a quick walkaround video at pickup is the single best thing you can do for a smooth refund.
