Camping near Allensworth, California
Allensworth sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley in Tulare County, on the flat farmland between Highway 99 and Interstate 5. It is an unincorporated community established in 1908 as the first California town founded, financed, and governed by African Americans, and the original townsite is preserved as Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. RV travellers use Allensworth mainly as a quiet overnight base on the Highway 99 corridor or as a stop while routing toward Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and the central California coast.
The nearest in-town camping is at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park itself. The 15-site campground operates year-round and accommodates tents and RVs, with two sites offering hookups and the remainder dry camping served by a dump station and potable water faucets. Travellers needing freeway-adjacent stops typically choose Lost Hills KOA Journey to the southwest near Interstate 5, or Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA Journey to the north on the Highway 198 corridor. Royal Palms and Country Manor Mobile Home Community offer additional long-stay options in the surrounding area.
Things to do around Allensworth
The main draw is the state historic park. Visitors can walk the early 20th-century streetscape and tour restored buildings that include a schoolhouse, church, library, hotel, general store, and Colonel Allensworth's home, learning how the highest-ranking Black officer in the United States military of his era built this community in retirement. A self-guided cell phone audio tour with placards in front of each building provides a brief history of Allensworth at every stop. The park grounds are open from 9 a.m. to sunset, with picnic areas and restrooms always available. A day-use area is set aside for picnicking and wildlife viewing in the surrounding San Joaquin Valley flats. Beyond the park, the location is a convenient launch point for day trips north toward Sequoia and Kings Canyon or west to the Carrizo Plain.

Allensworth has a hot, arid climate typical of the southern San Joaquin Valley. Summer is the hardest season for RV travel: daytime highs in July average close to 100°F, sites have limited shade, and air conditioning use is constant. Winters are cool and partly cloudy, with December and January lows dropping into the low 40s. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows, with mild days, cool nights, and very little rain. Wildflower viewing on the surrounding rangelands and at Carrizo Plain National Monument typically peaks from mid-March into April after a wet winter.
Winter is the wet season, though totals remain modest. Across the year the Delano area, the closest representative station, records about 52 rainfall days and roughly 174 millimetres of precipitation. March is the wettest month in this part of the valley. Dense tule fog can settle over the valley from late December into February and cuts visibility on Highway 99 and Interstate 5, so plan travel for daylight hours.
How to book campgrounds near Allensworth
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park is reserved through the California State Parks system. Bookings can be made up to six months in advance on a rolling window through ReserveCalifornia.com, with new dates released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific time, or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Reservations can also be taken on arrival when sites are available, and the park collects fees by self-registration envelope at the entrance. Reservations are recommended for weekends and special events. KOA properties are booked directly through KOA. Lost Hills KOA Journey and Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA Journey both take reservations by phone and online through the standard KOA platform, with cancellation rules set by each park.
What to expect on the ground
The setting is rural and flat, with farmland and rangeland in every direction. Cell phone coverage can be spotty, so it is worth downloading maps and information before arrival, and travellers should bring all necessary supplies, including food, water, and sun protection, as there are no stores within the park. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring, while restrooms have flush toilets and free hot showers, which operate during posted daytime hours. Some shade structures at the campsites are missing or in need of repair, so portable shade is useful in warm weather. Freight trains run on the tracks bordering the east side of the park day and night, and light sleepers should plan accordingly. The Visalia KOA accommodates larger rigs with full hookups, while Lost Hills KOA Journey adds laundry, a small store, a seasonal pool, and a dog park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Allensworth, CA
How much does an RV rental in Allensworth cost?
RV rental in Allensworth is one of the more affordable ways to experience California's Central Valley. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches run $275 to $400 per night. Because Allensworth sits in rural Tulare County rather than a major tourist hub, prices tend to be gentler than coastal California. To save more, consider a midweek booking outside Juneteenth and the October Rededication weekend when demand spikes. Filter by Instant Book on RVezy to lock in deals fast, and ask hosts about weekly discounts for longer Central Valley road trips.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Allensworth,CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Allensworth?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Allensworth. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes you might drive through the San Joaquin Valley. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit. Most renters are surprised at how simple the process is and can be road-ready in under 15 minutes.

Yes. Every RV rental in Allensworth booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. If you have a flat tire on Highway 43, run out of fuel near Earlimart, or need a tow back toward Bakersfield, help is one phone call away. During checkout, you choose your protection plan level so you can match coverage to your comfort and budget. The plan covers most accidental damage to the vehicle, giving you real peace of mind on your Central Valley adventure. It is purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals rather than traditional auto insurance.

You can book with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the individual host. There is a grace period right after booking where you can get a full refund, with additional flexibility depending on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Life happens, weather changes, wildfires close roads, family plans shift, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip to help. Booking a little earlier than you need gives you plenty of time within the grace window to confirm details with your host and finalize your Allensworth RV trip plans worry-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Allensworth?
Yes, furry travelers are welcome on many listings. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see pet-friendly RV rental Allensworth options from hosts who allow dogs. At Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, dogs are welcome in the campground on a leash no longer than six feet but are not permitted on the historic building tours or inside facilities. Summer afternoons here often top 100F, so never leave pets inside the RV without running AC and shade. Nearby Pixley National Wildlife Refuge is a great spot for a cooler morning leash walk. Pack a water bowl, a tie-out stake, and a few extra towels for dusty paws.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=583Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Allensworth?
Yes, RV delivery in Allensworth is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a stress-free first trip. Many RVezy hosts in the Bakersfield, Visalia, and Tulare areas offer delivery directly to the campground at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, located off Highway 43 in northern Tulare County. Your host will park, level, hook up if your site has utilities, and walk you through the entire RV before handing over the keys, so you never have to back a trailer into a tight site. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm the campground address and any delivery fee. It is hands-down the smoothest option for first-time renters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Allensworth,CaliforniaHow many miles do I get, and how far can I travel from Allensworth?
Plenty of road awaits. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) and offer unlimited mileage upgrades or extra-mile packages on request, ideal for a longer RV road trip from Allensworth. From the park, you are roughly 40 miles south of Visalia, 50 miles north of Bakersfield, around 100 miles to Sequoia National Park's Foothills entrance, about 175 miles to Yosemite Valley, and about 175 miles to Los Angeles or the Big Sur coast. Check each listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you are planning a multi-park loop, message the host to arrange an RV rental with unlimited mileage add-on upfront.

You have several solid options for RV camping in Allensworth. Bakersfield River Run RV Park, roughly 50 miles south, makes a comfortable southern basecamp. Reserve Colonel Allensworth sites up to six months ahead via ReserveCalifornia, especially around Juneteenth.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=583When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Allensworth?
Spring and fall are the sweet spot for an Allensworth RV trip. From mid-October through April, daytime temperatures typically range from the mid-50s to mid-80s F, ideal for exploring the historic buildings, biking the flat townsite, and enjoying campfires under huge Central Valley skies. Summers in the San Joaquin Valley regularly climb above 100F, so if you visit June through September, plan early-morning activities and choose an RV with strong air conditioning. Winter nights can dip into the 30s F but rarely freeze hard. Time your visit to the annual Juneteenth celebration in June or the October Rededication ceremony, two of the most memorable events at the park.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=583I have never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Allensworth?
You will do great, Allensworth is one of the friendliest places in California to learn. The terrain is almost completely flat, Highway 43 and the surrounding county roads are wide and lightly trafficked, and there are no mountain grades or city traffic to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and waste, and you can text or call them throughout your trip. For the easiest first time renting an RV experience, choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet and practice a few right turns before you head out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Allensworth,CaliforniaWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Allensworth on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, towing, and fuel delivery, even on rural stretches of Highway 43 where help can otherwise feel far away. For mechanical or systems questions (slide-out stuck, AC quirky, water pump acting up), message your host directly through the RVezy app since hosts know their RVs best and usually respond within minutes. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip. Save both numbers in your phone at pickup and relax, you are covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from Allensworth?
Allensworth is a hidden-gem launchpad. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Allensworth include heading northeast about 100 miles to Sequoia National Park to stand under the General Sherman tree, about 175 miles northeast to Yosemite Valley, around 175 miles west to the Big Sur coastline, or roughly 175 miles south to the beaches and theme parks of Los Angeles. You can also loop through Pinnacles National Park or chase wildflowers at Carrizo Plain National Monument in spring. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits, so keep your trip within the United States.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is straightforward in this part of California. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, but the Central Valley is one of the cheaper regions in the state, with stations along Highway 99 in Earlimart, Delano, and Tulare often beating coastal prices noticeably. Fill up in Delano or Tulare before pointing toward Sequoia or Yosemite, where mountain station prices climb sharply. Apps like GasBuddy make finding the cheapest pump effortless.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Allensworth?
You have flexibility here, which is part of Allensworth's charm. Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park's John L. Whitehead Jr. Campground rarely fills up except during Juneteenth weekend and the October Rededication ceremony, and reservations can be made through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance. For most weekends, you can roll in and self-register at the iron ranger station. For nearby private parks like Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA or Bakersfield River Run RV Park, aim for 2 to 4 weeks ahead in spring and fall, and 6 to 8 weeks for summer weekends when Sequoia and Yosemite visitors fill the valley. Pro tip: weekday arrivals almost always have walk-up availability.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Allensworth?
Driving here is refreshingly easy. Allensworth sits in the flat San Joaquin Valley off Highway 43 (Central Valley Highway), about 7 miles west of Highway 99 via the Avenue 56 exit at Earlimart. Roads are paved, straight, and lightly trafficked, ideal for big rigs and nervous first-timers alike. Watch for two local conditions: dense tule fog from late November through February (slow down dramatically and use low beams), and afternoon crosswinds in spring that can push high-profile RVs around, especially on Highway 5. Trains pass nearby Allensworth station regularly, so expect occasional whistle noise at night. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 99 between 4pm and 7pm on Fridays when Central Valley commuter traffic peaks.

Many also include a generator for boondocking, a TV, and a Bluetooth stereo. Wi-Fi is usually BYO via your phone hotspot since cell coverage at Colonel Allensworth is fair. Hosts make it easy to customize your Allensworth RV trip. Common add-ons include linen and kitchen packages, generator hours, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, BBQs, Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts offer delivery to Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park or nearby Bakersfield, Visalia, and Tulare campgrounds for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup is typically at the host's home base in cities like Bakersfield or Visalia, with a full walkthrough included. Each listing clearly shows its mileage policy, generator policy, and pet rules. Ask about a late checkout if you are returning on a weekday: many hosts are happy to oblige when the next booking is not tight.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Allensworth,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and fully handled through the RVezy platform: no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers, which protects both you and the host. You pay for your rental at booking with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card shortly before your trip starts (amounts vary by listing). As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed fuel and waste levels, the hold is released after your trip. Snap a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to keep your Allensworth RV rental experience deposit-issue-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Allensworth RV rental into Mexico or across state lines?
Interstate travel is wide open, but cross-border travel into Mexico is not. You can take your campervan rental Allensworth or motorhome across U.S. state lines, with popular routes including Nevada (Death Valley and Las Vegas), Arizona (Grand Canyon), and Oregon along Highway 101. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and insurance coverage do not extend south of the border. If you are planning a multi-state family RV trip from Allensworth, message your host before booking to confirm your route and any mileage upgrades. From Allensworth, the Grand Canyon's South Rim is roughly a long day's drive via Highway 58 and I-40, a fantastic week-long loop.
