Camping near Buttonwillow, California
Buttonwillow sits at the junction of Interstate 5 and State Route 58 in California's southern San Joaquin Valley, roughly 26 miles west of Bakersfield. The community is an unincorporated census-designated place in Kern County at an elevation of about 269 feet. Its position on the I-5 corridor makes it a common overnight stop for RV travelers heading between Los Angeles and the Bay Area, with most camping options being private full-hookup parks rather than public campgrounds.
The closest options for RV renters are Rosedale Village RV Campland and Lost Hills KOA Journey, with Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Bakersfield RV Resort, and Bakersfield KOA a short drive east. The surrounding landscape is flat farmland and oilfields, but the area serves as a practical base for day trips to Tule Elk State Natural Reserve, the Kern River, Carrizo Plain National Monument, and the southern Sierra foothills. Buttonwillow has a cold desert climate typical of the southern Central Valley, with hot, dry summers and cool winters, which shapes both the camping season and which day trips work best.
Things to do near Buttonwillow
Tule Elk State Natural Reserve protects a small herd of tule elk, an endemic California subspecies once hunted nearly to extinction, and provides a wildlife corridor through the southern San Joaquin Valley. The reserve sits roughly 15 miles west of Bakersfield off Stockdale Highway and Morris Road, about 3 miles southwest of I-5, with an accessible viewing platform, visitor center, and picnic area. Carrizo Plain National Monument is about an hour's drive from Buttonwillow and is known for hiking, backcountry driving, and spring wildflower blooms. Famoso Raceway, roughly 30 miles east, hosts drag racing and nostalgia events through the year, and the Kern River corridor east of Bakersfield offers fishing, rafting, and trailheads into Sequoia National Forest.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Central Valley. Spring brings generally mild weather well suited to hiking and wildlife observation, and wildflowers on Carrizo Plain typically peak from mid-March into April when winter rainfall has been adequate. The rainy season runs roughly November through March, with January and February the wettest months.
Summer is intensely hot and dry. Daytime highs in Buttonwillow regularly climb into the upper 90s and triple digits Fahrenheit from June into early September, with very low humidity. RV renters should plan for full-hookup sites with reliable 30 or 50-amp service so air conditioning can run continuously, and choose shaded sites when available.
Winter is mild by national standards but brings dense tule fog to the valley floor, which can sharply reduce visibility on I-5 and Highway 99 from late fall through winter. Most private RV parks near Buttonwillow operate year-round, while higher-elevation public campgrounds in the Sierra and Los Padres National Forest close or become snow-restricted from late fall into spring.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

How to book campgrounds near Buttonwillow
Private RV parks in the area, including Rosedale Village RV Campland, Lost Hills KOA Journey, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Bakersfield RV Resort, and Bakersfield KOA, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties can also be booked through the KOA reservation system and mobile app. For public lands within day-trip range, California State Parks campgrounds use ReserveCalifornia, which opens bookings on a rolling six-month window with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific. National forest campgrounds in Sequoia and Los Padres use Recreation.gov, also on a rolling six-month window. Tule Elk State Natural Reserve is day-use only and does not offer camping, so plan to stay at a nearby RV park and visit as a day trip. Holiday weekends and spring wildflower season fill earliest; book as soon as the window opens.
What to expect when camping near Buttonwillow
Expect a working agricultural and oilfield landscape rather than a scenic wilderness setting. Most parks closest to Buttonwillow are flat, full-hookup RV parks geared to interstate travelers and long-term guests, with pull-through sites, laundry, Wi-Fi, and often a pool. Big-rig access is generally easy thanks to wide farm-road grids and flat terrain. Traffic noise from I-5 is a factor at properties close to the interchange, so request an interior site if that matters. Cell coverage along the I-5 corridor is strong on all major carriers. Summer heat can stress RV refrigerators and tires, so check tire pressure in the cool morning and plan fuel and dump stops before midday. Wildlife viewing at Tule Elk State Natural Reserve is best in the cooler early morning and late afternoon hours.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Buttonwillow, CA
How much does an RV rental in Buttonwillow typically cost?
RV rental in Buttonwillow is one of the more affordable launch points in California, with travel trailers often starting around $90 to $140 per night and Class C motorhomes generally landing between $175 and $275 per night on RVezy. Because Buttonwillow sits at the I-5 and Highway 58 crossroads, hosts here see strong year-round demand from racetrack visitors and Sequoia travelers, so booking 4 to 8 weeks ahead usually unlocks the best rates. Pro tip: if you're flexible, midweek pickups (Tuesday through Thursday) can shave 10 to 20 percent off your total, and many hosts offer weekly discounts that make a 7-night San Joaquin Valley road trip noticeably cheaper.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buttonwillow,CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Buttonwillow, CA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Buttonwillow for nearly every motorhome, travel trailer, and campervan on RVezy. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use recreational vehicles, so your standard Class C license works perfectly. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens quickly through the platform before your trip. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised at how straightforward the licensing side of a California RV rental really is.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/What protection is included when I book an RV in Buttonwillow?
Every Buttonwillow RV rental on RVezy comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your booking, so you can hit I-5 with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose your protection level, which covers most damages to the vehicle and provides significant financial protection while you travel. RVezy renter protection plans are designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals and handle the common worries first-timers have, from minor mishaps at the campground to issues on the road. Pro tip: if you're heading into the Sierra Nevada or Death Valley after Buttonwillow, picking a higher protection tier is a smart move for those long, remote stretches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Buttonwillow RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every trip (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Buttonwillow dates with confidence. Depending on how far out from your trip you cancel, different refund options may apply, and if a host cancels you'll receive a refund or travel credit. You don't have to negotiate this with the host: RVezy's support team handles cancellations directly. Pro tip: book early to get your pick of Buttonwillow listings, knowing you have flexibility built in if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Buttonwillow RV rental?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental in Buttonwillow is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Many local hosts genuinely love pets and even leave bowls and beds in the RV. Once on the road, your pup will have plenty of options: the Lost Hills KOA Journey has an off-leash dog park, and the Kern National Wildlife Refuge 15 miles northeast of town has dog-friendly auto-tour routes for cooler mornings. Pro tip: in summer, Buttonwillow regularly tops 100°F, so plan walks before 9 a.m. and never leave your dog in an RV without the generator and AC running.
fws.gov/refuge/kernCan the RV be delivered to my campground or event in Buttonwillow?
Yes, RV delivery in Buttonwillow is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for guests heading to Buttonwillow Raceway Park, which sits about 12 miles south of town. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite, racetrack paddock, or even a private property, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV or you'd rather skip driving a big rig down I-5. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your exact delivery address and dates, since some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius and a flat per-mile fee beyond that.
buttonwillowraceway.com/How far can I drive, and what road trips work well from Buttonwillow?
You've got serious range from Buttonwillow, one of California's best-positioned RV launch pads. A Buttonwillow RV trip can easily reach Sequoia National Park (about 90 miles east, roughly 2 hours), Pismo Beach and the Central Coast (about 110 miles west, 2 hours), Yosemite Valley (about 200 miles north, 4 hours), Los Angeles (about 110 miles south, 2 hours), and Death Valley (about 230 miles east, 4.5 hours). Mileage policies are set by each host: some offer unlimited mileage, others include 100 to 150 miles per night with a small per-mile fee beyond. Pro tip: if you're planning a road trip that loops through Sequoia and the coast, filter for listings with unlimited mileage to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buttonwillow,CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Buttonwillow for an RV trip?
You've got several solid options for RV camping in Buttonwillow and the surrounding area. Lost Hills KOA Journey, about 20 miles north right off I-5, offers full hookups, a pool, and a dog park, perfect for an overnight stop. Bakersfield River Run RV Park, roughly 30 miles southeast, has shaded sites along the Kern River. Bakersfield KOA Journey provides 50-amp full-hookup pull-throughs ideal for big rigs. Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield is famous for its 40-acre orange grove where guests pick fresh fruit from their site. For something wilder, Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area about 25 miles south has lakefront RV camping with boat ramps. Pro tip: book weekend stays 2 to 4 weeks ahead, especially during racetrack events.
parks.ca.gov/When is the best time to plan an RV trip from Buttonwillow?
Spring (March to May) and fall (October to November) are hands-down the best times for an RV trip from Buttonwillow, with daytime highs in the comfortable 70s to mid-80s°F and cool nights in the 50s. Summer in the San Joaquin Valley is intense: July highs regularly hit 98 to 105°F, so if you travel then, plan early-morning drives and run the generator for AC at midday. Winters are mild (50s to 60s daytime, 30s to 40s at night) and great for desert trips toward Death Valley. Local insider tip: Buttonwillow gets just about 7 inches of rain a year and around 275 sunny days, so blue-sky shoulder-season trips are almost a sure bet.
weather.gov/hnx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll be in great hands. First time renting an RV in Buttonwillow is genuinely one of the easier places to start: the roads around town are flat, wide, and uncrowded, with I-5 and Highway 58 nearby for easy practice. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedure, and most are happy to text you during your trip if you have questions. You can also message the host before booking with any concerns. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much like a large van or pickup, and Buttonwillow's straight, open routes give you confidence fast.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if the RV breaks down during my Buttonwillow trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you have a flat on I-5, a battery issue at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, or a mechanical hiccup heading up to Sequoia, help is one phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Your host is also a quick message away for system-specific questions like generator or slide-out troubleshooting. Pro tip: before pulling out of the driveway, save the RVezy roadside number and your host's phone number to your contacts, cell coverage along stretches of I-5 north of Buttonwillow can be spotty, so having numbers offline matters.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Buttonwillow RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes to most road trips, no to Mexico. You can drive your Buttonwillow RV rental into Nevada (Las Vegas is about 280 miles east), Arizona, Oregon, or Utah, popular routes include heading north to Lake Tahoe or east toward the Grand Canyon. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage don't extend across that border. Some hosts also have their own mileage caps for multi-state trips, so message the host from the listing before booking to confirm your route works. Pro tip: a classic loop from Buttonwillow is I-5 north to Yosemite, east to Mono Lake, then south through Death Valley, about 800 miles of jaw-dropping scenery in a week.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Buttonwillow RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on a Buttonwillow RV trip, so it's smart to plan ahead. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 14 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers towed by your own truck mirror your truck's mileage with a 20 to 30 percent hit. California gas prices typically run $4.75 to $5.50 per gallon, but the truck-stop cluster at the I-5/Highway 58 interchange in Buttonwillow (Pilot, Love's, TA) is reliably among the cheaper diesel and gas stops in the region. Pro tip: fill up in Buttonwillow before heading east toward Sequoia or Death Valley, fuel prices climb steeply once you leave the I-5 corridor.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Buttonwillow?
For the Buttonwillow area specifically, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is plenty for most private RV parks like Lost Hills KOA or Orange Grove RV Park. But if you're continuing on to Sequoia, Kings Canyon, or Yosemite, those national park campgrounds book up 5 to 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, the official federal reservation system. California State Parks (like Pismo State Beach toward the coast) use ReserveCalifornia and open bookings 6 months out to the day. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for 8 a.m. Pacific exactly 6 months before your desired Sequoia or Yosemite arrival date, the best riverside and shaded sites get snapped up within minutes.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Buttonwillow?
Driving an RV around Buttonwillow is refreshingly easy: the roads are flat, straight, and surrounded by farmland, with I-5 and Highway 58 providing wide lanes and generous shoulders. The two real things to watch for are tule fog from November through February (dense valley fog that can drop visibility to under 500 feet, especially at dawn) and summer crosswinds along I-5 that can push high-profile RVs around. If fog rolls in, pull off at a truck stop and wait it out. Wildfire smoke is also possible in late summer. Pro tip: the California Highway Patrol updates road and visibility conditions in real time, check QuickMap before driving early-morning stretches between Buttonwillow and Bakersfield in winter.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/How do I handle summer heat in a Buttonwillow RV rental?
Buttonwillow is one of the hottest spots in California, with summer highs from June through September regularly between 95 and 105°F, so heat planning is part of the fun. The good news: nearly every RVezy listing here comes with rooftop air conditioning and an onboard generator so you can run AC anywhere, plus most campgrounds (Lost Hills KOA, Bakersfield River Run) offer 30/50-amp shore power that keeps the AC humming all day for pennies. Park in the shade when you can, close blinds during peak afternoon hours, and pre-cool the RV before bed. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips in April, May, October, and November are the smart-money play, cooler temps, lower demand, and the same wide-open valley views.
weather.gov/safety/heatWhat amenities should I expect inside a Buttonwillow RV rental?
Buttonwillow rentals on RVezy come well-equipped for valley heat and long-haul travel. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/sofa sleeping, a kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, a bathroom with toilet and shower, rooftop air conditioning, propane furnace, fresh/grey/black water tanks, and seatbelts for all road occupants. Most Class C motorhomes here also include an onboard generator (essential for AC in the San Joaquin Valley), and many listings add TVs, Bluetooth stereos, and outdoor awnings. WiFi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count and amenities to match your group, and check the photos for slide-outs, which can nearly double the living space when parked.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat amenities do campgrounds near Buttonwillow typically offer?
Campgrounds near Buttonwillow are generally well set up for RVs of all sizes. Private parks like Lost Hills KOA Journey, Bakersfield River Run, and Orange Grove RV Park typically offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), on-site dump stations, potable water fill, laundry, hot showers, pools, and WiFi. Public spots like Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area provide partial hookups and dump stations but fewer frills. If you need to dump or fill on the road, the Pilot and Love's truck stops at the Buttonwillow I-5 exit have dump and potable water facilities for a small fee. Pro tip: confirm your RV's length and slide-out clearance when booking, some older Buttonwillow-area parks have sites best suited for rigs under 35 feet.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29263What add-ons, pickup logistics, and mileage policies should I know about?
Hosts in Buttonwillow customize their listings, so you'll see options like generator hours, kitchen kits, bedding packages, outdoor chairs, bike racks, and even pre-stocked pantries, prices vary but most add-ons run $10 to $50. Mileage policies also vary: some Buttonwillow hosts offer unlimited mileage (ideal for a Sequoia-to-Coast loop), while others include 100 to 150 free miles per night with about $0.35 to $0.50 per extra mile. Pickup is usually at the host's home, but delivery to Buttonwillow Raceway Park, local campgrounds, or Bakersfield airport is commonly offered. Pro tip: if you're planning a long road trip, filter for listings with unlimited mileage and message the host before booking to confirm delivery fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buttonwillow,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, never cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value and your chosen protection level) and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same shape it left. To avoid any surprises, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your rental terms require it. Pro tip: choosing a higher protection tier during checkout often lowers your security deposit, a nice perk for cheap RV rental in Buttonwillow seekers.
