Campgrounds near Caspar, California
Caspar is a small unincorporated village on the Mendocino Coast in Mendocino County, sitting on Highway 1 between Mendocino to the south and Fort Bragg to the north. The area lies on the Pacific Coast in Mendocino County, with a residential community on a bluff overlooking the ocean roughly 4 miles north of the town of Mendocino. RV travelers use Caspar as a base for exploring rugged coastline, redwood-lined creek canyons, and the historic town of Mendocino.
Camping options range from full-hookup private parks to forested state-park sites. Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground offers full hookup sites for RVs along with laundry, showers, a store, and fish cleaning facilities. Russian Gulch State Park sits just south of the village and provides a quieter, tree-shaded alternative. Woodside RV Park and Campground, Pomo RV Park and Campground, and Hidden Pines RV Campground round out the nearby options, mostly clustered around Fort Bragg a few miles up the coast. Cell service is uneven along the coast highway and inside canyon campgrounds, so planning offline is recommended.
Things to do near Caspar
The Point Cabrillo Light Station, built in 1909, is a state historic park set on 297 acres of trails and wildlife about 4 miles north of Mendocino. A short, mostly flat walk leads from the parking area down to the light station, and the site includes restored keeper's houses, a small marine science exhibit, and coastal trails.
Russian Gulch State Park features a Fern Canyon trail leading through second-growth redwood forest to a 36-foot seasonal waterfall, and the Devil's Punchbowl, a collapsed sea cave visible from a headland overlook. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens span 47 acres of themed displays, from rhododendrons in spring to heaths, heathers, camellias, and rare plants. The Skunk Train, originally built in 1885 to haul redwood logs, now ferries sightseers between Fort Bragg and Willits. Tidepooling, kayaking at Caspar Cove, and beachcombing at Glass Beach round out the list.

The Mendocino Coast has a mild marine climate with a sharp wet-dry split. The wettest stretch falls in January, February, and March, while June, July, and August are the driest months. Summer brings the warmest and driest weather, but coastal fog is frequent, especially in the mornings, and daytime highs along the immediate coast often stay in the low 60s Fahrenheit.
Russian Gulch State Park Campground is open for overnight camping (reservable) from early May through mid September, sometimes into mid October. From Labor Day through the end of March the campground operates first-come, first-served, while the rest of the year is reservable up to six months in advance. Late spring and early fall are sweet spots for RV travelers: weather is generally dry, gray-whale watching is possible during migration windows, and reservations are easier than in peak summer. Holiday weekends fill the fastest. Winter rigs should plan for storms, downed trees, and possible Highway 1 closures.
How to book campgrounds near Caspar
Reservations at Russian Gulch State Park can be made from May through Labor Day, available up to six months in advance by calling 1-800-444-7275 or through the reservations link on the park's California State Parks page. Bookings run through reservecalifornia.com. Because the booking window opens six months out, popular summer weekends are claimed quickly, and mid-week stays often offer more availability.
The park's horse camp on the northeast edge of the park is reserved by calling the District Office at 707-937-5804. Private parks such as Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground, Woodside RV Park and Campground, Pomo RV Park and Campground, and Hidden Pines RV Campground take direct phone or website reservations and tend to open booking windows further in advance than the state system. Summer holiday weekends sell out months ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Caspar split into two distinct experiences. Beach-adjacent private parks offer full hookups, hot showers, laundry, and small camp stores. Caspar Beach RV Park provides full hookups, cable TV, fire rings, restrooms with showers, laundry, and a store. State park sites are forested and more rustic. Russian Gulch has no hookups or dump station, but the setting offers ocean access and forest trails within walking distance, with flush toilets, hot showers, and food lockers.
Rig size matters. The Russian Gulch campground can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 24 feet. Larger rigs should head to the private parks. Expect cool nights even in summer, damp campsites under the redwoods, and banana slugs on the trails. Pack layers, a rain shell, and bring drinking water as a backup.

They will level the rig, hook up power and water where available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm your campsite. It is a stress-free way to enjoy your first RV camping Caspar experience.

September is genuinely the warmest month with average highs around 67°F and the clearest skies, while July and August often bring famous Mendocino fog that burns off by midday. May, June, and early October are the local insider's sweet spot, fewer crowds, blooming wildflowers on the headlands, and dry trails at Russian Gulch. Winter highs still hover near 54°F and December is the rainiest month with about 1.77 inches of rain. Pro tip: book your RV rental Caspar California stay for the second or third week of September for the warmest, sunniest beach days of the year.
weather.gov/eka/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Caspar?
You've got this, first time renting an RV on the Mendocino Coast is very doable, especially with the right rig. Caspar sits on a relatively straight, manageable stretch of Highway 1, far less hair-raising than Big Sur, with wide turnouts and slower coastal traffic. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slides, and the propane system, so you won't be guessing. If you're nervous, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C under 25 feet, both handle the curves easily. Pro tip: ask your host about RV delivery in Caspar so you can skip the drive entirely and just enjoy the destination.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-trailers-handbook/What happens if my RV breaks down during my Caspar trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Caspar booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Caspar Beach RV Park or pulled over on Highway 1 near Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. Roadside assistance covers flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also reachable by message in the RVezy app, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway, cell service can get patchy on the wooded stretches of Highway 1 between Caspar and Leggett.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Caspar rental on a longer road trip up the coast or to Oregon?
Yes, an RV road trip from Caspar is one of the best launchpads on the West Coast. Most hosts welcome multi-state trips throughout California and Oregon, you just need to confirm during booking. From Caspar you can head north to Redwood National and State Parks (about 170 miles), continue up Highway 101 to Crescent City, or roll into Brookings, Oregon in roughly 230 miles. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed with some hosts. Mexico travel, however, is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your full route, they often have insider stops to recommend along Highway 1.
nps.gov/redw/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for in Caspar?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays reasonable. Class B campervans on the Mendocino Coast typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes return 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 MPG. California gas prices run higher than the national average, and the nearest stations to Caspar are in Fort Bragg (8 miles north) and Mendocino (3 miles south), so fill up there rather than waiting. For a typical 5 day Mendocino Coast loop covering 300 to 400 miles, budget $150 to $400 in fuel depending on your rig. Pro tip: top off in Fort Bragg before heading inland, prices climb as you move into the redwoods.

Lock in your campground first, then book your RV. California State Parks like Russian Gulch, MacKerricher, and Van Damme open reservations exactly 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia at reservecalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-7275. Summer weekends and holidays sell out within minutes of going live, so set a calendar reminder. Caspar Beach RV Park (private) takes reservations directly and also fills up fast for July and August. From Labor Day through late March, Russian Gulch shifts to first-come, first-served, perfect for spontaneous off-season trips. Pro tip: weekday stays in May or October are almost always available last minute and feel like you have the Mendocino Coast to yourself.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Caspar, CA?
Highway 1 through Caspar is scenic but manageable, much gentler than the famously twisty Big Sur stretch. Expect a two lane road with curves, occasional fog (especially in July and August), and slower-moving traffic in summer. The road south toward Leggett gets steeper and more winding, so check Caltrans QuickMap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov before traveling, especially in winter when storms can cause closures. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk along Point Cabrillo Drive. Stick to daylight driving when possible and use the many turnouts to let faster cars pass. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for Mendocino County, cell coverage drops out on the wooded sections just inland from Caspar.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What campground amenities can I expect near Caspar?
You'll find a healthy mix of options. Caspar Beach RV Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), Wi-Fi, cable TV, hot showers, laundry, and an on-site convenience store, ideal for longer stays. State parks like Russian Gulch and MacKerricher are more rustic with no hookups but provide flush toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and food lockers (raccoons are real). Both state parks have potable water spigots, and MacKerricher has a dump station for emptying tanks. Pro tip: bring quarters, MacKerricher's showers are coin-operated at $1 for 5 minutes, and the nearest grocery resupply is Harvest Market in Fort Bragg, 8 miles north.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=437What's typically included in a Caspar RV rental?
More than you would expect. Most motorhome rental Caspar listings come fully equipped: real beds with linens (just ask), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining seating with seatbelts, climate control, and often a TV. Many include a generator for boondocking, awnings for beach-side shade, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi depends on cell coverage, which can be patchy in Caspar's wooded canyons. Travel trailers and fifth wheels usually need to be towed by a capable truck (some hosts deliver instead). Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host if you want extras like a paddleboard, beach gear, or a portable propane fire pit for Caspar Beach.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Caspar,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Caspar?
Hosts in the Caspar and Mendocino area offer plenty of ways to customize your trip. Common add-ons include camping kits (chairs, table, cookware), linens and towels, bikes, kayaks, generators, portable BBQs, and starter propane fills, usually $20 to $100 each. Mileage policies vary, some include 100 free miles per day, others offer unlimited mileage for a flat fee, which pays off fast for a campervan rental Caspar coastal loop. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Mendocino, Fort Bragg, or Caspar itself, and many will deliver right to your campsite for an extra fee. Pro tip: ask for a generator add-on if you are booking a no-hookup site at MacKerricher or Russian Gulch.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Caspar,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Caspar?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly during booking with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup, and the amount is clearly shown on the listing before you commit. The deposit is released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, and report any pre-existing dings through the RVezy app. Pro tip: returning the RV clean, with the holding tanks emptied at the MacKerricher dump station, is the easiest way to get your full deposit back fast.
