Campgrounds and RV parks near Crowley Lake, CA

Trout fishing is the headline activity. The lake is regularly stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and is famous for its opening-day crowds, while McGee Creek, the Owens River, and Convict Lake offer additional water within a short drive. Boat rentals and launch access are available at the south end of the lake through Crowley Lake Fish Camp Tackle. Hiking trails climb into the John Muir Wilderness from McGee Creek, Convict Lake, and Rock Creek Canyon, with quick access to alpine lakes and meadows. Other options include mountain biking, horseback riding from local pack stations, soaking at nearby hot springs, and day trips to Devils Postpile National Monument, Mammoth Mountain, and the June Lake Loop. Winter visitors use the area for skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling out of Mammoth Lakes.

The camping season at Crowley Lake is tightly tied to the snowpack. Most private RV parks in the area, including McGee Creek RV Park and Campground, run from late April through early October, and the Inyo National Forest notes that open dates are approximate and that heavy snow can delay openings or force early closures to protect water systems. Mono County's traditional trout season at Crowley Lake opens on the last Saturday in April, locally called Fishmas, and runs through November 15, with some other Eastern Sierra waters open year-round under separate regulations. Spring weekends, especially opening weekend, fill the closest campgrounds first, followed by a steady run of bookings through summer and into fall. July and August bring the warmest weather, the lightest precipitation, and afternoon thunderstorm potential at elevation. Fall delivers cooler nights, aspen color along McGee Creek and the June Lake Loop, and lighter crowds before campgrounds close. Winter shuts most sites in the immediate Crowley Lake area, with Mammoth Mountain RV Park in town one of the few year-round options.

Elevations around Crowley Lake run from roughly 6,900 feet at the lake to over 7,500 feet at nearby Forest Service campgrounds, so nights are cold even in midsummer and afternoon thunderstorms can build quickly. Hookup levels vary by park: McGee Creek RV Park and Campground offers full and partial hookups, while Browns Owens River Campground is primarily dry camping. Mammoth Mountain RV Park provides full and partial hookups year-round, though some amenities such as the clubhouse and recreation room are summer-only. This is bear country. Food, coolers, and scented items must be stored in hard-sided RVs or provided bear lockers. Seasonal fire restrictions are common during dry months, and a California Campfire Permit is not required for fires inside established rings at developed campgrounds. Cell service is spotty outside town.
