Campgrounds near Dobbins, California
Dobbins is a small unincorporated community in Yuba County, in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California's Gold Country. The area sits at roughly 1,200 feet, below the snow line and above the valley fog line, which allows nearby campgrounds to operate year round. The town is positioned between Marysville and Grass Valley, with Sacramento roughly an hour and a half to the southwest.
RV travelers use Dobbins as a base for lake-oriented camping in the western Sierra foothills. Lake Francis Resort is located in the small town of Dobbins and offers immediate lake access, on the edge of Tahoe National Forest. Lake of the Springs RV Resort, a Thousand Trails property, covers 950 acres in the foothills with a private 120-acre lake for fishing, swimming and boating. Collins Lake Recreation Area, a short drive west, offers lakefront RV camping on a 1,600-acre lake with 12 miles of shoreline. Quail Ridge RV Park and Inn Town Campground extend the options south and east toward Nevada City and the surrounding Tahoe National Forest country.
Things to do near Dobbins
Fishing dominates the trip-planning calendar in this part of the foothills. Collins Lake receives weekly trout plants from October through May and also supports robust populations of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, redear and channel catfish. The lake also has a marina with boat rentals, a sand swimming beach, a children's playground, beach volleyball and a general store. At Lake of the Springs, the lake allows swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boats like canoes and kayaks. Hikers can pick up the 3-mile out-and-back Hidden Spruce Trail along the Collins Lake high-water mark. Day trips reach historic Gold Country towns including Nevada City and Grass Valley, and the South Yuba River corridor for swimming holes and trails.

Spring is a strong all-around window in the Dobbins area: lakes are full from winter runoff, trout plants are still active, and daytime highs are comfortable for hiking. Collins Lake receives weekly trout plants from October through May, making spring a prime fishing stretch.
Summer brings hot, dry weather in the foothills and the heaviest demand for lakefront and hookup sites. Fire risk climbs sharply across Yuba County and the surrounding national forest, and seasonal fire restrictions are common. Travelers should check current restrictions with the operator and with the relevant fire agency before arrival.
Fall cools quickly with clear days and lighter crowds, and trout planting resumes in October. Public-land sites along the South Yuba and in the higher Tahoe National Forest typically wind down by mid- to late fall as weather allows.
Winter is the wettest stretch. Most lower-elevation campgrounds remain open because Dobbins sits below the snow line and above the valley fog line at roughly 1,200 feet.

How to book campgrounds near Dobbins
Most campgrounds in the Dobbins area are privately operated and book directly. Collins Lake opens at sunrise all year for lakefront RV hookup and tent camping, fishing, boating, picnics or just enjoying the beach, with reservations handled through its own online system. All campsite reservations at Collins Lake have a 2-night minimum stay, a 3-night minimum on holidays, and some sites carry a 7-night minimum. Lake Francis Resort takes direct reservations through its resort office. Lake of the Springs is a Thousand Trails property, where booking ahead is recommended, particularly for the limited full-hookup sites. For nearby public-land sites in Tahoe and Plumas National Forests, popular campgrounds can be reserved through Recreation.gov, while many smaller sites are first come, first served. Book summer weekends and holiday periods well in advance.
What to expect
Expect foothill terrain: rolling hills, oak and pine cover, and winding two-lane access roads. When approaching Collins Lake, be aware that some of the roads are steep in certain sections, though they remain accessible for RVs and vehicles towing boats. Plan fuel and grocery stops in Marysville or Grass Valley before the final approach.
Hookup quality varies. Lake Francis Resort offers shaded sites with full hookups, plus tent sites and cabins. Lake of the Springs accommodates RVs up to 60 feet across multiple loops, with both back-in sites and tent-friendly spots, though full hookup spots are limited in number. Cell coverage is patchy in the canyons and around the lakes, so plan for limited connectivity. Wildlife encounters happen regularly, with deer comfortable enough to approach campers during meals, so standard food-storage practices apply.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dobbins, CA
How much does an RV rental in Dobbins, CA typically cost?
RV rental in Dobbins, CA is one of the best values in Northern California, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275 per night through RVezy. Because Dobbins sits in the quieter Yuba County foothills rather than a busy coastal market, you'll usually pay less than you would near Sacramento or Lake Tahoe. To find a cheap RV rental in Dobbins, book midweek, travel in May or late September shoulder season, and filter by Instant Book to compare prices fast. Pro tip: bundling a 4 to 6 night stay at Bullards Bar often unlocks weekly discounts that hosts set on their listings.
visityubasutter.com/lodging/campgroundsWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Dobbins, CA?
Good news: a regular California Class C driver's license is all you need to drive almost every RV rental in Dobbins. The California DMV allows a standard Class C license to operate any housecar 40 feet or shorter, which covers nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy. You'll generally need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform, so there's nothing extra to mail or upload in person. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license (an International Driving Permit is recommended if it's not in English) and you're set for your Dobbins RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance is included when I rent an RV in Dobbins?
Every RV rental in Dobbins booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head up Marysville Road toward Bullards Bar with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (it isn't host-defined), and the plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV. If a tire blows on Highway 49 or your battery dies at a campsite, one call gets help dispatched any time of day. The combination of a protection plan plus included roadside support is exactly what first-time renters tell us makes them comfortable booking an RV rental in Dobbins.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Dobbins RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room to confirm dates with family or check the Sierra weather forecast. Cancellation terms depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start. Hosts don't set their own cancellation rules on RVezy, which keeps things consistent and predictable. Pro tip: lock in your favorite RV early during peak Bullards Bar season, then finalize the rest of your itinerary knowing you have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dobbins RV trip?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Dobbins, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Yuba County is a great dog destination, with leashed pets welcome at Bullards Bar Reservoir recreation sites including Schoolhouse and Hornswoggle Campgrounds (pets must be leashed within 300 feet of the reservoir, picnic areas, or boat ramps per Yuba County ordinance). Many trails in the surrounding Tahoe National Forest also allow leashed dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to ask about any small pet cleaning fee, and bring a long tie-out so your pup can lounge outside the RV at camp.
yubawater.org/253/New-Bullards-BarCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Dobbins?
Yes, RV delivery in Dobbins is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Schoolhouse Campground, Hornswoggle Group Campground, Dark Day, or a private property near Lake Francis Resort, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no learning to back a trailer down a narrow forest road on day one. Filter listings by Delivery, then message the host with your campsite number, and you can show up with just your cooler and groceries.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10040047How far can I drive from Dobbins on a typical RV rental?
You've got a huge playground within easy reach when you rent an RV in Dobbins, CA. Bullards Bar Reservoir is right next door at about 5 miles, Nevada City is roughly 35 miles south, Lake Oroville sits about 45 miles northwest, North Lake Tahoe is around 90 miles east, and Lassen Volcanic National Park is about 150 miles north. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and you'll see some listings advertised as RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a bigger road trip from Dobbins. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're chaining together Tahoe, Yosemite, and the Lost Sierra in one loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dobbins%2C%20CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Dobbins for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Dobbins. Lake Francis RV Resort sits right in town with full hookups and immediate lake access, while Schoolhouse Campground and Hornswoggle Group Campground on Bullards Bar Reservoir offer Tahoe National Forest scenery managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Cottage Creek Campground above the dam features newer paved RV pads up to 50 feet wide with restrooms and water. Emerald Cove Marina also has camping near the boat ramp. Reserve U.S. Forest Service sites on Recreation.gov up to six months ahead, especially for summer weekends, since Bullards Bar fills fast once Memorial Day hits.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10039887When is the best time of year for a Dobbins RV trip?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Dobbins RV trip, with the sweet spot being May, June, and September when temperatures are warm but not scorching. Summer highs in July and August regularly hit the low 90s, so plan early morning drives and afternoon swims at Bullards Bar Reservoir. Winters are mild compared to higher Sierra elevations, with January highs around 56°F and lows near 40°F, and almost no snow at Dobbins' ~1,800 foot elevation, so off-season RV camping in Dobbins is genuinely doable. Insider tip: book Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends three to six months out, since these are the busiest dates on the reservoir.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Dobbins&state=CA&site=STO&textField1=39.3717&textField2=-121.205I've never driven an RV before. Is Dobbins a good place to start?
Dobbins is actually a wonderful spot for first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, speeds on Marysville Road and Highway 49 are moderate, and there are no congested urban freeways or steep mountain passes between Yuba City and Bullards Bar. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering hookups, slide-outs, water systems, and dump procedures, and you can text them throughout your trip. Choose a Class B campervan rental in Dobbins or a smaller 24 foot Class C motorhome rental in Dobbins if you want the gentlest learning curve. Pro tip: ask your host to record a short video of the dashboard during orientation so you have a reference back at camp.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/What happens if something breaks down during my Dobbins RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat on Marysville Road, a dead battery at Hornswoggle Campground, or a propane issue at Lake Francis, help is one call away. Your host is also your second lifeline, most respond within minutes through the RVezy app and can troubleshoot common issues like a tripped GFCI or a stuck slide-out remotely. For anything mechanical, roadside dispatches a local provider, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave cell range on the back roads near Camptonville.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dobbins RV rental to Tahoe, Yosemite, or out of state?
Yes, Dobbins is a fantastic launchpad for a bigger RV road trip from Dobbins through the West. Lake Tahoe is about a 2 hour drive east, Yosemite National Park is roughly 4 hours south, Lassen Volcanic National Park is about 3 hours north, and Redwood National Park is around 6 hours northwest. Most hosts welcome interstate trips through Nevada, Oregon, and beyond, just confirm in the listing details or message them before booking. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection don't extend across that border. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed with some hosts, so ask first if Banff is on your bucket list.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/rv.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Most Class C motorhome rentals in Dobbins get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 14 MPG. California gas prices run higher than the national average, so expect to pay around $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon at stations in Marysville or Grass Valley, which are your last big fueling stops before heading up to Bullards Bar. Pro tip: fill up in Marysville on the way in, since prices climb and stations thin out once you pass Browns Valley on Marysville Road.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Dobbins?
For summer weekends at Bullards Bar Reservoir, book your campsite the same day you book your RV, ideally three to six months out. Schoolhouse, Hornswoggle, Dark Day, Cottage Creek, Garden Point, and Frenchy Point campgrounds all reserve through Recreation.gov, which opens reservations exactly six months in advance to the day. Weekdays and shoulder season (May and late September) often have availability inside two weeks. Lake Francis RV Resort and Emerald Cove Marina take reservations directly. Insider tip: if everything's booked, check Recreation.gov a few days before your trip, holiday cancellations open up surprisingly often and you can score a prime lakeside RV camping Dobbins site at the last minute.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10040047What are the local driving conditions like around Dobbins?
Driving around Dobbins is mellower than most California RV destinations, but a few foothill realities are worth knowing. Marysville Road and Highway 49 are paved two-lane roads with curves, modest grades, and occasional 25 mph hairpins as you climb toward Bullards Bar Reservoir. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, falling rocks after winter storms, and the occasional logging truck near Camptonville. Cell service drops in canyon stretches, so download offline maps before you leave Marysville. Summer fire season can bring smoke or short closures, so check the California Highway Patrol's QuickMap before you roll out. Pro tip: take the climb in low gear on the way back down, your brakes will thank you.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Dobbins?
Local campgrounds run the full range, so you can pick what matches your style. Lake Francis RV Resort offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and a small store. Cottage Creek Campground at Bullards Bar has paved RV pads, restrooms, and potable water but no individual hookups, making it perfect for a self-contained rig. Schoolhouse and Hornswoggle Campgrounds offer vault toilets and drinking water. Dump stations are available at Lake Francis and Emerald Cove Marina, and you can top off potable water there too. Insider tip: if you're staying at a U.S. Forest Service site, ask your RVezy host to send you out with full fresh water tanks, you'll stretch your stay without a mid-trip resupply run.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10039887What will be inside my Dobbins RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how livable today's RVs are. Most Dobbins motorhome rentals come with a real queen or king bed, a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a wet bath or full bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating with seatbelts, climate control, and a generator or solar for off-grid stays at Bullards Bar. Many include outdoor speakers, awnings, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi and TVs vary by listing, and cell-based hotspots can be spotty around the reservoir canyons. Check the Amenities section of each listing on RVezy to confirm what's included. Pro tip: look for rigs with a built-in generator if you plan to dry-camp at Dark Day or boat-in sites.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/tahoe/recreation/recarea/?recid=55654What add-ons and pickup options are popular for Dobbins RV rentals?
Hosts in the Dobbins area love making your trip easier with optional add-ons like linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), generator hours, propane refills, camp chairs, bike racks, and stand-up paddleboards, perfect for Bullards Bar's 60 miles of shoreline. Many also offer delivery and setup directly to your campground, with delivery fees usually based on distance from their home base. Pickup is typically self-serve at the host's property in Dobbins, Oregon House, or nearby Marysville, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary, with most listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and unlimited mileage options also available. Pro tip: ask about a paddleboard add-on, the warm calm water at Bullards Bar is made for it.
visityubasutter.com/activity/bullards-bar-reservoirHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You'll pay your rental total by credit or debit card when you book, with a portion charged upfront and the balance typically a few weeks before your trip. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, and it's released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your Dobbins RV trip, do a quick video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, return the tanks per the listing, and refuel before handover.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow hot does it get in Dobbins, and how do I stay comfortable?
Dobbins summers are genuinely hot, with July and August averaging highs near 94°F, so a little planning keeps your trip blissful instead of sweaty. Look for RV rentals with rooftop air conditioning and a reliable generator or 30/50 amp shore power, since most Bullards Bar campgrounds with hookups will run AC comfortably. Drive in the cool morning hours, park in shade when you can, and stash a cooler of cold drinks for swim breaks at Dark Day, where the reservoir is famously refreshing. Insider tip: the lake water at Bullards Bar stays warmer than most Sierra reservoirs because it's relatively shallow, making late-afternoon swims the perfect way to beat Yuba County heat.
