Camping near Dustin Acres, California

Dustin Acres is a small census-designated place in Kern County, California, sitting in the southwestern San Joaquin Valley a few miles north-northeast of Taft. The community itself has no developed campground, so RV travelers base out of full-service parks in nearby Bakersfield, roughly 30 to 40 miles to the northeast, and at Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area, a man-made site located approximately 25 miles southwest of Bakersfield. The closest commercial options include Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield RV Resort, Bakersfield KOA, and Bakersfield River Run RV Park, all clustered around metro Bakersfield with full hookups, paved pads, and pull-through sites that handle larger Class A rigs. Bear Mountain RV Resort offers another nearby choice with resort-style amenities. The flat valley geography, mild winters, and easy access from Interstate 5 and State Route 119 make this a practical staging area for trips toward the southern Sierra, the Carrizo Plain, and the central coast.

Things to do near Dustin Acres

Day trips fan out in every direction. Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area, a Kern County park built around Lake Webb and Lake Evans, is a regional draw: Lake Evans is designated for sailing and fishing with a maximum 5-MPH boating speed limit, while Lake Webb is a favorite for boating, jet skiing, waterskiing, and fishing, with marina facilities, launch ramps, bike paths, and playgrounds nearby. The West Kern Oil Museum in Taft documents the region's oil-field heritage, and Wind Wolves Preserve to the south offers hiking and wildlife viewing on protected grasslands. Carrizo Plain National Monument, west of Dustin Acres, draws visitors for spring wildflowers and dark-sky stargazing. Travelers staying at Bakersfield KOA or Bakersfield River Run RV Park can reach downtown Bakersfield, the Kern River Parkway bike path, and the Kern County Museum within a short drive.

The southern San Joaquin Valley has an arid climate with mild, relatively rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers. Daytime highs in July and August routinely reach the upper 90s Fahrenheit, and afternoon temperatures above 100 are common, so RVers planning summer stays should prioritize sites with 50-amp service and shaded pads to run air conditioning. From June to September it never rains, which keeps roads and unpaved access reliable but elevates regional fire risk; travelers should check Cal Fire and Kern County restrictions before lighting campfires. Spring, roughly March through May, brings the most comfortable temperatures, wildflower blooms on the Carrizo Plain and at Wind Wolves Preserve, and the best conditions for hiking and sightseeing. Fall is similarly pleasant and quieter at the commercial parks. Winters are mild during the day but can dip near freezing at night, and dense tule fog can settle over the valley floor for days at a time, reducing visibility on Interstate 5 and Highway 99. Winter is also when nearly all of the area's modest annual precipitation falls.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

Booking and how to reserve

Privately operated parks such as Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield RV Resort, Bakersfield KOA, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, and Bear Mountain RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most accept holds several months ahead. Bakersfield KOA can also be booked through the KOA reservation system. For public camping at Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area, reservations are handled by Kern County Parks and Recreation online or by calling the Parks reservation desk, with a valid credit card required. Reservations are available any time prior to arrival at the campground, based on availability, and may be made up to one year in advance. There is a limit of 2 campsites per customer per date, with only one waterfront and one non-waterfront campsite allowed per customer per date. Up to 14 consecutive days can be reserved during Peak Season, and up to 31 consecutive days during Off-Peak Season. Buena Vista Campground and Day Use accepts credit and debit card only, with no cash accepted.

What to expect

Expect open, flat valley terrain rather than forested mountain scenery. The Bakersfield-area RV parks are designed for travelers and longer-term residents, with paved or graveled pull-throughs, full hookups, laundry, pools, and Wi-Fi; some sit close to Highway 99, Interstate 5, or rail lines, so light highway and train noise is part of the experience at certain sites. Cell coverage and grocery access are strong throughout the metro area. At Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area, 112 campsites for RV and tent camping sit on a peninsula near the Lake Webb marina, a number of them lake-front, and all sites are pull-through with space for up to two recreational vehicles. Campsites have picnic tables and fire grills, some with full hookups, and there is a dump station, tap water, camp store, showers, and restrooms with flush toilets. Summer afternoons can be hot and dusty, so plan outdoor activities for morning or evening.
