Campgrounds near East Porterville, California
East Porterville sits in Tulare County at the edge of the Sierra Nevada foothills, just east of Porterville and within easy reach of Sequoia National Park, Sequoia National Forest, and the Giant Sequoia National Monument. The community is unincorporated and small, but its location on Highway 190 makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers heading up the Kaweah and Tule River drainages toward the big trees.
Nearby campground options range from full-hookup commercial parks in the foothills to forest sites at higher elevations. Lemon Cove Village RV Park and Quail Valley RV Park serve travelers wanting paved sites and amenities close to Highway 198 on the route to Sequoia. Sequoia Campground and Lodge and Three Rivers Hideaway sit along the Kaweah River near the Ash Mountain park entrance, while Camp Nelson RV Park lies higher up Highway 190 in cooler pine country. Success Lake, owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and operated jointly with Tulare County Parks, offers additional waterfront camping just minutes from town.
Things to do near East Porterville
The main draw is Sequoia National Park, home to the Giant Forest and the General Sherman Tree. The General Sherman Tree is the world's largest tree in volume, and it sits just two miles from Lodgepole Campground. Day trips from East Porterville reach the Foothills Visitor Center, Hospital Rock, and the sequoia groves above Giant Forest via the Generals Highway.
Closer to town, Success Lake covers 2,450 surface acres and is popular for boating, waterskiing, sailing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. The Tule River canyon along Highway 190 offers swimming holes, hiking, and access to the Western Divide. Crystal Cave tours give visitors a view of rock formations, fossils, rare minerals, and unique wildlife, and tickets must be reserved in advance through Sequoia Parks Conservancy rather than purchased at the cave entrance. Vehicles longer than 22 feet are prohibited on the narrow, winding Crystal Cave Road.

The foothills around East Porterville have a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Temperatures at Success Lake can be over 100 degrees in the summer, and shade is limited at lower elevations, so many RV travelers prefer the cooler air at higher campgrounds in Sequoia National Forest and the park during July and August. Mosquitoes are minimal in the dry valley but can be active near rivers in late spring.
Spring is the best window for valley camping. In the springtime wildflowers bloom on nearby foothills, creating a dazzling display of color. Snow lingers on the Generals Highway into late spring, and some park roads to higher elevations open only after plowing.
Fall brings cooler nights, smaller crowds, and clearer air after summer wildfire season. Winter is wet and chilly at the lower elevations, with snow at park elevations above roughly 5,000 feet. Potwisha in the foothills and Azalea in Grant Grove are the only two campgrounds open year-round in Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Its was our first time camping and we are very lucky we found this one. Alex is a great host and explained everything before we departed. We were a little stressed as it was our first time camping in King's Canyon, but Alex made us feel comfortable with the trailer and walked us through everything. The trailer is super neat and clean we didn't have to do anything to set up. We put our stuff in it and it was ready to go which made our trip a lot easier. Alex is very friendly and was available throughout our whole trip in case we had questions and needed help. We will definitely be coming back to Alex for all our camping adventures. Thank you it was a great experience!

We had a great week in the Sequoias using Alex’s trailer. It was extremely clean and had great supplies available. The kids loved their bunkbeds plus the option to sleep on the fold-down dinette area. Communication with Alex was great - he provided lots of helpful details and helped us resolve one minor issue right away. Definitely recommend!

How to book campgrounds near East Porterville
Campgrounds inside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are booked through Recreation.gov. All Sequoia and Kings Canyon campgrounds require advance reservations during peak season, with booking windows opening one month in advance on Recreation.gov, with reservations opening on the 15th of each month at 7:00 AM Pacific Time. Summer demand is extremely high, and popular campgrounds like Lodgepole fill within minutes of reservations opening. Checking regularly for cancellations three to seven days before your desired dates often turns up openings.
Success Lake's Tule Campground is also reserved through Recreation.gov, with a longer booking window of up to six months in advance. Private parks listed here, including Lemon Cove Village RV Park, Quail Valley RV Park, Sequoia Campground and Lodge, Camp Nelson RV Park, and Three Rivers Hideaway, are booked directly through each property's own website or phone line.
What to expect on the ground
Roads from East Porterville to the high country are steep and winding. Rigs heading up Highway 198 toward Sequoia should be aware of length limits past Potwisha. Vehicles over 22 feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180 rather than the tight switchbacks above the foothills. Camp Nelson RV Park sits at higher elevation on Highway 190 and offers a cooler base, while Lemon Cove Village RV Park and Quail Valley RV Park stay in warmer foothill terrain with hookups.
At Tule Campground on Success Lake, the campground has 103 sites, and twenty-nine of them have electric hookups with 30 and 50 amp service. Bear-resistant food storage is required at all campgrounds inside the national park, and rangers enforce it strictly. Cell coverage is patchy once you leave the valley floor, so download maps before heading up the canyons.

Plan your East Porterville RV trip fuel budget around 8 to 12 mpg for most motorhomes and 10 to 15 mpg for trucks towing travel trailers. California gas prices are typically among the highest in the country, so check current rates before you go and fill up in Porterville before heading into Sequoia National Forest, where stations are limited and pricier. Expect lower mileage on the climbs into the high country, and budget a little extra for that scenic drive up the Western Divide Highway.

For the best campgrounds near East Porterville, including Lake Success and Quaking Aspen, book 2 to 3 months in advance for summer weekends and holidays, when local boaters and Sequoia visitors fill sites fast. Reserve federal campgrounds on Recreation.gov, and contact Tulare County Parks for county-run options. Spring and fall typically offer more last-minute availability and cooler weather for hiking.
recreation.gov/What is driving an RV like around East Porterville? Are there any road hazards to know?
Driving an RV around East Porterville is generally easy: CA-65 and Highway 190 through the valley are wide and RV-friendly. The climb on Highway 190 into Sequoia National Forest gets steep and twisty, so reduce speed, use lower gears on descents, and check your RV's height before any tunnels or low branches. Watch for agricultural trucks during harvest season and avoid narrow downtown Porterville streets at school pickup times. Driving earlier in the day on summer weekends helps you beat lake traffic.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/Do East Porterville campgrounds provide water, power, and dump stations?
Most campgrounds near East Porterville offer at least partial hookups. Tule Campground at Lake Success has sites with water and electric plus a dump station near the day-use area. Quaking Aspen Campground in Sequoia National Forest provides potable water and vault toilets but no sewer hookups, so plan to dump in Porterville before heading home. Many sites include picnic tables and fire rings; always check the specific amenities on each campground's listing when you reserve.

Many hosts offer rooftop AC, generators, solar, outdoor awnings, and TVs, and add-ons like WiFi hotspots, bedding packages, and camp chairs are common. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes can sleep six or more, making them great for a family RV trip from East Porterville. Message the host if you have a must-have feature.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Porterville%2C%20CaliforniaWhat RV add-ons and options are popular in East Porterville, and how do pickup and dropoff work?
