Campgrounds and RV parks near Fort Bragg, CA

MacKerricher State Park extends for several miles along the ocean north of Fort Bragg, with beaches, a rocky point with tide pools and seal watching stations, miles of bike trails, and Lake Cleone. The paved Coastal Trail follows an old logging haul road and is easy for kids on bikes or scooters. Glass Beach, on the north edge of town, draws visitors looking for sea-tumbled glass left from a former dump site, though removal is restricted. The Noyo Harbor area offers whale-watching and salmon-fishing charters in season. Inland, the Skunk Train runs from the Fort Bragg depot into the redwoods. Just south of town, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens sits on bluff-top acreage along Highway 1. During winter and early spring, gray whales and harbor seals can be seen on and around the rocky shores of Laguna Point, and in summer Lake Cleone is suitable for paddling.

The Mendocino Coast has a cool maritime climate with a sharp wet-dry split. Most precipitation falls between October and April, winter storms can bring strong winds and heavy rains, and summers tend to be dry, with frequent morning fog rolling in from the ocean. Daytime highs are mild year-round and rarely climb out of the 60s Fahrenheit, so RVers escaping inland heat often head here in July and August. Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for camping. May, September, and October typically deliver the clearest skies, the lowest fog frequency, and the warmest beach days, with September the warmest month on average. Summer weekends fill quickly at state-park campgrounds, and private RV parks in town also tighten up around the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Gray whale migration is visible from late winter into spring, drawing visitors to Laguna Point and other coastal pull-offs. Winter campers should expect closed loops at some state parks, soggy ground, and the occasional storm-driven road closure along Highway 1.

Sites at MacKerricher State Park trend small and shaded under coastal pines, with no hookups, and RVs and trailers are limited to 35 feet. Within the park are a dump station, potable water, restrooms with coin showers, food lockers, and trails around Lake Cleone. Cell coverage at MacKerricher is spotty and improves closer to Highway 1 and into town. In-town RV parks generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi of varying quality, and laundry. Weather is cool and damp even in summer. Pack layers, a windbreaker, and waterproof footwear regardless of season. Coastal beaches have rip currents and sneaker waves, so swimming is limited. Bears are not a concern at the coast, but raccoons and ravens raid unsecured food. Highway 1 is winding and narrow in spots south of town, which matters for larger Class A rigs and long trailers.
