Campgrounds and RV parks near Mountain Gate, CA

Shasta Lake is the dominant draw, with 365 miles of shoreline and arms along the Sacramento, McCloud, and Pit Rivers suited to houseboating, kayaking, wakeboarding, swimming, and bass and trout fishing. Lake Shasta Caverns, accessed by a catamaran ride across the McCloud Arm followed by a bus to the cave entrance, runs guided tours year-round. Shasta Dam, one of the tallest concrete dams in the United States at 602 feet, offers free tours and a visitor center a short drive from Mountain Gate. West of Redding, Whiskeytown Lake has a swim beach at Brandy Creek and the James K. Carr Trail, a 3.4-mile round-trip route to 220-foot Whiskeytown Falls. The Sacramento River Trail and the Sundial Bridge in downtown Redding work well for an easy day off the water, and Mount Shasta is about an hour north up I-5.

Late spring through early fall is the prime RV season around Mountain Gate. May and June bring warming temperatures, full reservoirs from snowmelt, and wildflowers in the higher reaches of Whiskeytown. July and August are reliably hot and dry, with daytime highs commonly in the 90s and frequently topping 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so shaded sites, air conditioning, and lake access matter. This is also peak fire season in Northern California; check current restrictions and air quality before traveling, as wildfire smoke can affect the region from July into October. September and October cool noticeably, crowds thin, and water levels drop, but conditions remain pleasant for boating and hiking. November through February is the wet season, with most precipitation falling as rain in the valley and snow at higher elevations. Many Forest Service campgrounds close or shift to limited services in winter, while private RV parks along the I-5 corridor generally stay open year-round.

Sites at private parks along I-5 are generally level with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and big-rig pull-throughs available. Expect some highway noise at parks close to the freeway. Cell coverage is strong in the Mountain Gate and Redding corridor on major carriers, weaker once routes drop into canyons or onto the lake's upper arms. Roads to lakeside campgrounds can be steep and narrow with tight switchbacks, so larger rigs should map turn-by-turn before committing. Summer brings intense sun and very low humidity; carry extra drinking water and check tire pressures. Bears are present in the surrounding national forest, and food storage rules apply at public campgrounds. Fire restrictions, including campfire and generator limits, are common from late spring through fall.
