Camping near Porterville, California
Porterville sits at the southern end of California's Central Valley, in Tulare County, with the Sierra Nevada rising directly to the east. The town serves as a practical staging point for trips into Sequoia National Forest, the Giant Sequoia National Monument, and the southern entrance corridor to Sequoia National Park via Three Rivers. RV travelers typically split time between valley-floor parks close to services and higher-elevation forest campgrounds reached by Highway 190 or Highway 198.
Options close to town include Lemon Cove Village RV Park and Quail Valley RV Park along the Highway 198 corridor toward Sequoia, and Sequoia Campground and Lodge on the Kaweah River near Three Rivers. Royal Palms and Country Manor Mobile Home Community provide additional in-town stays. Just east of Porterville, Success Lake offers Army Corps of Engineers camping along the Tule River reservoir, with the Sierra foothills as the backdrop and giant sequoia groves within roughly an hour's drive.
Things to do near Porterville
Success Lake supports boating, waterskiing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing, with largemouth bass and crappie among the most-targeted species. East on Highway 190, the road climbs into Sequoia National Forest and the Giant Sequoia National Monument, where the Trail of 100 Giants offers a short, accessible loop through old-growth sequoias. The Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest, reached via Bear Creek Road from Springville, holds additional sequoia groves and quiet hiking. The Kern River drainage to the southeast draws anglers and rafters. In town, visitors can stop at the Porterville Museum, the historic Zalud House, and Veterans Park. Three Rivers, about 40 minutes north, is the staging town for Sequoia National Park's Foothills and Giant Forest areas.

Porterville's valley floor is hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, but elevation changes everything once a trip heads east into the Sierra. Summer temperatures at Success Lake regularly exceed 100 degrees, and campfire restrictions in lower-elevation foothill campgrounds are common during the dry months. Spring is the strongest window for valley and foothill camping, with comfortable temperatures and foothill wildflowers in bloom.
Higher-elevation campgrounds in Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park typically open in late spring and close in fall once snow arrives. Potwisha and Azalea are the two campgrounds inside the parks that remain open year-round. In winter, the Generals Highway between Sequoia and Kings Canyon often closes, and chains may be required on park roads. Fall brings cooler temperatures, lower fire risk, and thinner crowds, though daylight shortens quickly after early November. Smoke from regional wildfires can affect air quality from mid-summer into early fall, so checking conditions before departure is worthwhile.

Its was our first time camping and we are very lucky we found this one. Alex is a great host and explained everything before we departed. We were a little stressed as it was our first time camping in King's Canyon, but Alex made us feel comfortable with the trailer and walked us through everything. The trailer is super neat and clean we didn't have to do anything to set up. We put our stuff in it and it was ready to go which made our trip a lot easier. Alex is very friendly and was available throughout our whole trip in case we had questions and needed help. We will definitely be coming back to Alex for all our camping adventures. Thank you it was a great experience!

We had a great week in the Sequoias using Alex’s trailer. It was extremely clean and had great supplies available. The kids loved their bunkbeds plus the option to sleep on the fold-down dinette area. Communication with Alex was great - he provided lots of helpful details and helped us resolve one minor issue right away. Definitely recommend!

Booking and reservations
Private parks around Porterville, including Lemon Cove Village RV Park, Quail Valley RV Park, and Sequoia Campground and Lodge, are booked directly with the operator. Federal campgrounds use Recreation.gov. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park campground reservations open on a one-month rolling window: on the 15th of each month at 7:00 AM Pacific Time, sites become available for the following month. Popular campgrounds such as Lodgepole fill within minutes of opening, so securing dates the moment the window opens is essential for summer weekends. Cold Springs in Mineral King operates first-come, first-served through summer. Tule Campground at Success Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is reserved through Recreation.gov.
What to expect
Expect a sharp split between valley conditions and mountain conditions. Around Porterville and Success Lake, sites are open, sun-exposed, and warm; shade is limited and the lakeshore can be muddy when water levels drop. Vehicles over 22 feet long should enter Sequoia and Kings Canyon via Highway 180 from Fresno rather than Highway 198, an important note for larger RVs. Inside the national park, RV hookups are not provided, though a free dump station operates year-round at Potwisha. Black bears frequent the area, and bear-proof food storage is required. Cell service is reliable in Porterville and patchy to nonexistent in the forest. Fuel up and stock groceries before heading east; services thin out past Springville.

For the best campgrounds near Porterville, like Tule Campground at Success Lake and Quaking Aspen Campground in Sequoia National Forest, reserve at least four weeks ahead in spring and summer. Book online at Recreation.gov, the official reservation site for Army Corps of Engineers and Forest Service campgrounds in this area. Each site has its own opening calendar, so check for seasonal closures at higher elevations. Local tip: Tule Campground is open year round, and weekday and post-holiday openings are common, perfect after grabbing an Instant Book RV on RVezy.

Driving an RV in Porterville is relaxed compared to big-city traffic. Main routes like Highway 65 and Highway 190 are wide, well-paved, and lead straight to Success Lake and Sequoia National Forest. Summer means hot, dry, clear roads; winter mornings can bring tule fog in the valley, and you may catch gusty crosswinds heading into the foothills.
