Camping near Shandon, California
Shandon is a small ranching community in eastern San Luis Obispo County, set along Highway 46 about 18 miles east of Paso Robles. The town itself has no developed campgrounds, so RV travelers base out of nearby Paso Robles wine country, which sits within a 20 to 30 minute drive and offers the closest concentration of full-hookup parks and vineyard stays. Options range from full-service resorts with pools and pull-through sites to working-vineyard properties that double as boutique campgrounds.
Close-in choices include Vinyl Vineyards along the Union Road Wine Trail, Wine Country RV Resort, Sun Outdoors Paso Robles, California, Locatelli Vineyards and Winery, and Vines RV Resort. Together they cover the spectrum from large amenity-driven resorts to quieter ranch and vineyard sites. Shandon itself contributes a Caltrans rest area on Highway 46 with truck and RV parking, useful as a stopover for travelers crossing between the coast and Interstate 5.
Things to do near Shandon
The area is built around wine, ranchland, and dark skies. Just outside Shandon, Serra Chapel on Chapel Hill sits at the end of a short, steep hike off Highway 46 and offers sweeping views across the eastern Paso Robles countryside. A short drive northeast leads to Cholame and the James Dean Memorial at the junction of Highways 41 and 46. To the west, Paso Robles delivers the bulk of attractions: hundreds of tasting rooms, the Sensorio Field of Light, Vina Robles Amphitheatre, downtown dining, and Mission San Miguel a few miles further north. Outdoor options include hiking and birdwatching on the Salinas River Parkway and Centennial Trail, swimming and boating at Lake Nacimiento about 45 minutes away, and a roughly 45-minute run to the Pacific at Cayucos or Morro Bay.

Shandon shares the Paso Robles inland climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wetter winters. Summer brings reliably clear skies with daytime highs that frequently push into the 90s Fahrenheit, while nights cool sharply thanks to marine influence drifting in from the coast. This swing makes RV camping comfortable after sundown but demands shade, awnings, and good ventilation during the day.
Spring is the strongest all-around window. March through May delivers wildflowers across the rolling hills, mild daytime temperatures, and green pastures before the summer dry-down. Fall, from September through early November, is harvest season across the wine region and brings warm days, cool nights, and the busiest tasting-room calendar. Winter is the quietest stretch, with most rain falling between December and February. Roads stay open year-round, but some vineyard-based sites scale back hours and amenities, and overnight lows can drop near freezing.

We had a great experience renting the RV! Amir was an excellent communicator from start to finish—very kind, pleasant, and easy to work with. The service was great, the RV was in great shape, and everything went smoothly. I would definitely rent from Amir again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great RV rental experience!

It was great working with Kelli and Pete. They were very responsive and friendly. Pete arrived right on time, both on delivery and on pick up. Pete set up the RV in short order and was very thorough in explaining how everything worked. The RV was clean and came equipped with almost everything we needed. And when I had a special request for a large cooking pot they provided two. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend them to anyone.
Cindy W. - Jan 2026
Pete dropped this off for us and it was perfect! He set it all up and walked us thru the “need to knows”. Kelli was great to communicate with thru the process as well. They both answered all of our questions and were super cool. The RV was great, no problems at all, highly recommend booking it!

How to book RV sites near Shandon
Most properties in the Shandon and Paso Robles corridor are privately operated rather than state or federal parks, so booking is done directly through each campground's website or through aggregator platforms. Large resorts such as Sun Outdoors Paso Robles, California, Wine Country RV Resort, and Vines RV Resort use their own online reservation systems and typically allow bookings several months in advance. Smaller vineyard properties, including Vinyl Vineyards and Locatelli Vineyards and Winery, often list inventory on platforms like Hipcamp and Harvest Hosts.
Weekends from late spring through harvest fill earliest, especially around wine-festival dates and holiday weekends. Reserving six to eight weeks ahead is reasonable for summer and fall; midweek winter stays are usually available on shorter notice. Check rig-length limits, hookup type, and pet policies at the time of booking, since vineyard properties vary widely.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, agricultural landscape: oak-dotted grasslands, vineyards, cattle ranches, and two-lane roads. Cell service is generally good along Highway 46 and in Paso Robles but can fade on backroads toward Creston and Cholame. Larger resorts offer full hookups, pools, laundry, and pet areas, while vineyard sites tend to be quieter, with fewer amenities and sometimes limited power or shared facilities.
Nights are dark thanks to the rural setting, so stargazing is excellent. Days can be hot and dusty in summer, and afternoon winds are common across the open hills. Wildlife sightings of deer, wild turkeys, and raptors are routine. Grocery and fuel runs are easiest in Paso Robles; Shandon itself has limited services, so plan provisioning before settling in.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shandon,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Shandon, California?
Good news: for almost every RV rental in Shandon, your regular driver's license is all you need. California allows a standard Class C driver's license to operate any housecar 40 feet or shorter, which covers virtually every camper van, Class B, Class C, and most Class A motorhomes on RVezy. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country auto association before you fly in, and you're set. You must be at least 25 years old to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform, so the whole process takes just a few minutes online.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/What kind of protection is included when I rent an RV in Shandon?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Shandon on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, which covers most damage to the vehicle and gives you real peace of mind on the road. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Shandon RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. If plans change, open your trip in your RVezy dashboard and the support team will walk you through your options. Pro tip: book early for spring wildflower season near Shandon, and you'll have plenty of flexibility to adjust if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Shandon RV trip?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental in Shandon is easy to find on RVezy: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers where furry passengers are welcome. Once you arrive, your dog has room to roam, since Lake San Antonio and Lake Nacimiento both allow leashed pets in their campgrounds, and many trails in the surrounding Los Padres National Forest are leash-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about secure screen doors, which are a lifesaver when you're parked among the oaks on a warm Shandon afternoon.
fs.usda.gov/lpnfCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Shandon?
Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to do a first Shandon RV trip. Many hosts on RVezy offer RV delivery in Shandon, dropping the rig at your campsite at Lake Nacimiento, Lake San Antonio, or a Paso Robles wine-country property, then leveling, hooking up, and walking you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location, with flat rates common for popular destinations. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts deliver to Shandon, then message them with your campsite details to confirm.

dot.ca.gov/What are the best campgrounds near Shandon, CA?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Shandon include Lake Nacimiento Resort (about 35 miles west, with hundreds of sites and full hook-up options), Lake San Antonio (about 40 miles northwest, with year-round camping), Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles (about 20 miles west, with full hook-up sites, pool, and spa), and Cava Robles RV Resort for a more upscale wine-country base. For dispersed camping, BLM lands at Carrizo Plain National Monument (about 50 miles south) offer wide-open RV camping that Shandon adventurers love. Pro tip: lakeside sites book out months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve early.
recreation.gov/When is the best time to visit Shandon, CA in an RV?
Shandon has a Mediterranean inland climate, so the sweet spot is mid-March through late May and again from mid-September through early November. Spring brings wildflower blooms in the Carrizo Plain and comfortable daytime highs in the 65 to 80F range, while fall delivers grape-harvest energy across Paso Robles wine country and warm afternoons in the 70 to 85F range. Summer (June through August) is hot and dry with highs often in the 90s and cool nights near 60F, ideal if your rental has solid air conditioning. Winters stay mild but bring most of the area's annual rainfall, so pack layers and a rain jacket.
weather.gov/lox/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Shandon?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is easier in the Shandon area than in much of California, because Highways 46 and 41 are wide, lightly trafficked roads with gentle grades through rolling ranch country. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, slide-outs, water, propane, and the dump valves, so you never feel rushed. Pro tip for first-timers: ask your host about a Class C motorhome rental in Shandon under 28 feet, drive it like an oversized minivan, and stick to daylight hours for your first leg toward Lake Nacimiento or Paso Robles. Renters generally need to be at least 25 to book on RVezy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
Help is one call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows, so even if you're parked along Highway 46 between Shandon and Cholame at midnight, support is on the way. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, and most Shandon-area owners respond within minutes because they live nearby in Paso Robles, Atascadero, or San Luis Obispo. Save the RVezy support contact info to your phone before you leave, and you'll have backup the entire trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Shandon RV trip?
Easy to plan for. Class B campervan rental Shandon options average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A diesel pushers run 7 to 10 MPG. Gas in the Shandon and Paso Robles corridor typically tracks 20 to 40 cents below San Francisco prices, with the cheapest stations usually found in Paso Robles along Highway 46 or in Atascadero. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop from Shandon to Cambria and back in a 25-foot Class C, budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Fill up in Paso Robles before heading into the Carrizo Plain, where stations are sparse.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Shandon?
Earlier is better, but you have options. For summer weekends at Lake Nacimiento or Lake San Antonio, book 4 to 6 months ahead through the Monterey County Parks reservation system. Wine Country RV Resort and Sun Outdoors Paso Robles can fill 2 to 3 months out for harvest weekends in September and October. For spring or fall midweek trips, 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: if everything looks booked, check Hipcamp for private ranches and vineyards near Shandon and Paso Robles, where last-minute RV sites with hookups regularly pop up.
co.monterey.ca.us/government/departments-a-h/parksWhat are the local driving conditions like around Shandon?
Driving an RV around Shandon is genuinely relaxing compared to coastal or urban California. Highway 46 east of Paso Robles (the route through Shandon to I-5) is a divided 4-lane in many sections with wide shoulders, and Highway 41 toward Atascadero rolls through gentle ranch country. Watch for two things: strong afternoon crosswinds in the open valley between Shandon and Cholame (slow down in high-profile rigs), and slow-moving farm equipment in spring and harvest seasons. Fog can settle in early mornings during winter. Avoid the windy Nacimiento-Fergusson Road over to Big Sur in any RV over 20 feet, it's narrow and steep.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Shandon?
Most established RV parks in the Shandon and Paso Robles area come fully loaded. Expect 30/50-amp electric, fresh water hookups, sewer connections, hot showers, flush toilets, and Wi-Fi at resorts like Wine Country RV Resort and Sun Outdoors Paso Robles. Lake Nacimiento's Oak Knoll has full hook-ups and a dump station, while Lake San Antonio offers a mix of full hook-up and water-and-electric sites. For dumping or refilling on the road, the Flying J in Lost Hills (about 50 miles east on Highway 46) and the Paso Robles Pilot are reliable stops. Pro tip: fill fresh water before leaving paved campgrounds, since dispersed sites in the Carrizo Plain have none.
parks.ca.gov/What features and amenities come with a typical Shandon RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental Shandon on RVezy comes with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating that converts to extra sleeping space, air conditioning, propane heat, fresh/grey/black water tanks, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Most rigs include a TV, many have Wi-Fi boosters or Starlink, and onboard generators are common on Class C and Class A models for off-grid nights in the Carrizo Plain. Family RV trip Shandon hosts often add bunk beds, outdoor speakers, and dedicated kids' setups. Check the listing photos for a full equipment rundown.
nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/rv-camping.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about when I rent an RV in Shandon?
Hosts make customizing easy. When you rent an RV in Shandon, popular add-ons include linens and towels ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $30), portable generators ($25 to $50 per day), bike racks, and propane fire pits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Shandon, Paso Robles, Atascadero, or San Luis Obispo, with delivery widely available. Mileage policies typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overages around 30 to 50 cents per mile, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Confirm pickup time and any after-hours options in the host chat.
slocounty.ca.gov/Departments/Parks-and-Recreation.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you rent an RV in Shandon, RVezy charges your card for the rental total, protection plan, and any add-ons at checkout, so there's no cash handoff at pickup. A refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before your trip, then released after the host confirms the rig was returned in good condition. Pro tip: do a video walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off, note any existing scuffs in the RVezy app, and your deposit comes back fast and clean.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Shandon RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-state road trips from Shandon are popular. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, so runs from Shandon into Nevada (Las Vegas is about 380 miles via I-15), Arizona (the Grand Canyon is roughly 600 miles), and Oregon are all on the table, just confirm with the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection and roadside assistance do not extend across that border. Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval. Pro tip: a classic loop from Shandon north on Highway 101 to Big Sur, Monterey, and San Francisco runs about 250 miles each way and makes a great long weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's a local insider tip for an RV trip in Shandon?
Here's the move locals love: time your RV camping Shandon weekend with the Carrizo Plain National Monument super-bloom, usually peaking mid-March to mid-April after a wet winter. Drive Highway 58 south from Shandon for about 45 minutes and you'll hit Soda Lake Road, where hillsides of goldfields, phacelia, and tidy tips light up the valley like a painting. Then loop back through Highway 46 East and stop at the James Dean Memorial in Cholame (15 miles east of Shandon) for a quintessential roadside moment. Finish with dinner and a tasting on Paso Robles' east side, where Tin City's craft wineries and breweries welcome RVs in their lots until evening.
